Roberts is a solid choice. He's a brilliant legal mind and former clerk for the Cheif Justice, Rehnquist. He is a conservative and a constitutional originalist, which is a good thing, because it means he beleives that the legislature (reperesntatives of the people) should make the law, not the judges.

If you're a democrat, you should be thankful Bush didn't pick someone more extreme. Alot of potential nominees out there were/are much more radical then Roberts.

Think about it this way, in 2002 when Roberts was nominated to the DC appellate court, he was confirmed unanimously by the Senate (96-0!) at a time when the democrats had the senate majority and were pretty much filibustering everyone the President put up there (Owen, Estrada, etc) If they didn't block him then, when they were blocking lots of others, they shouldn't block him now.I think he will be confirmed pretty easily, and hopefully avoid some of the fighting and bad blood that would have come from someone more controversial.

Yeh like losing your house? Amazing that you're concerned w. rules that protect us in time time of terrorism but you're not concerned about the eminent domaine ruling that the liberal judges Ginsburg, (Clinton), Breyer (Clinton), Stevens, Kennedy, and Sutter voted for for. Looking out for the little man, yeh right.

Yeah well this was a curious decision and I think an anomaly if you're judging these justices.

If anyone here argrees with the decision I'd love to hear why - I'm curious about the argument.

Btw Sandy baby came up with her usual eloquent dissent:

"Any property may now be taken for the benefit of another private party, but the fallout from this decision will not be random," O'Connor wrote. "The beneficiaries are likely to be those citizens with disproportionate influence and power in the political process, including large corporations and development firms."

We're gonna miss her. ANd who remembers who gave her the nickname Sandy baby and why? (hint - it's sports-related).

I am a little undecided about the eminent domain issue because while I feel for the average joe I have seen people try to take advantage of situations for their own gain (holding out for more money) versus the greater need. Like added schools to accomodate a growing community or needed infrastructure expansion. But I agree no one should have their house bulldoze to build a new mall.

Yes! WE have a winner!!!

Riggins got totally sht-faced at a WHite House dinner. He was seated at a table with O'Connor. At one point he leaned across the table and said to her, "Sandy baby, c'mon loosen up." He then slid under the table and passsed out on the floor for the rest of the evening.

Riggins was the man indeed.

Yep, he was indeed one of a kind. That's what is lacking in the NFL right now. Personalities like Riggins. When guys try they get branded as being a headcase.
