After the last strike, a lot of people who'd gotten used to traveling by other means didn't go back to using the subways and buses, at least not for a good long while.

Everyone should do the same. Buy a bike and just be nice and car pool with friends and co-workers.

Boycott the MTA!!!

I was riding my bike today to take care of some things. My bike is trash but I stopped on the side of the street to see if I can fix my gears and a dude stopped by and helped. It was great.....we talked about the strike and stuff......turns out he was retired from another city agency(I forgot which one). He was suprised to see a MTA guy that looks the way I do, and traveling on a bike. He said he was gonna tell people he knows because he admitted to me that he didn't even think about how the actual MTA guys on strike got around.

Need to get to 145 5th Avenue.

Is 145 a building number or a street? Cuz there is no 145th and 5th.....I think it turns into Convent(sp?) ave. up that way. If you going to 145th and convent then you must be meeting someone about some Yayo!!! Ain't nothing but Dominicans up that way and they not selling plantains on those corners.

Yo the strike is OVER!!!

From the NY Times website:

NEWS ALERT | 2:43 PM ET
Union Board Votes to End Strike, Two of Its Members Say

From 1010wins.com:

BREAKING: Union leaders representing striking transit workers held a meeting this afternoon and voted to end the three-day walkout that has crippled New York City. It could take at least 12 hours to get subways and buses running again.

And it's all over the front page of Google News...

Sounds like by tomorrow everything will be back to normal...hopefully.
EnySpree @ 12/22/2005 4:24 PM
Bloomberg just made his statement about the announcement.

He denied that he called the workers thugs and he denied other disgusting things about how we raise our children. He said they were directed to the Union leadership and he stood behind his remarks.

He also made a point to say a off-duty fire fighter got hit by a church bus. He also had the nerve to mention blood shortages at the blood bank. Blood banks are always short. Geez man I voted for this ass hole.

Bloomberg was also asked why the MTA was not just made into a city agency. He said it used to be but the mayors at the time decided that they did not want to deal with it and left it private! He said he thinks it should stay that way......doesn't that mean he could have stepped in and stopped this. Doesn't it mean that he himself is a real thug. What and asshole!
FYI.....the Governor appoints the chairman and several other key members of the MTA. So the Governor actually runs the MTA through the goons he appointed. So he is an asshole too.

^ No doubt Eny, the real thugs are the MTA, Governer, and the Mayor.

They wield the Taylor law like a baseball bat. "What are you gonna do, strike? I'll crack you upside the head with the Taylor Law, now take what we give you!"

I wish somebody had the money to investigate these guys.

The trains won't be running till Mid-night. I personally know that it takes at least 16 hrs to safely start up the whole system. It's not about people actually reporting. It has to do with switches and signal problems. Everything has to be in proper working order and all rails have to have a test trail run along them before any passengers are allowed to board a train.

Things will be back to normal by the AM rush (5am)hour definately.
EnySpree @ 12/22/2005 4:42 PM
The Governor is a liar. He's saying that MTA were giving the Union everything we wanted for current workers....He said we were gonna get over 10% a year raises. They were talk 3% last time I checked.

Besides........this fight was more for the future of the job. New hires. All the people that have been bad mouthing the Workers will be waiting on lines to take the next test so they can work for these monsters. All new hires will understand how important the strike was.

Still I also want to say that their could be another strike if they can't come up with an agreement. I hope not. I just don't understand why they can't just make things fair and stop playing hardball with the current workers and all future people that would take the MTA job if it were available.

If there is another strike, expect the same deal PATCO got from Reagan in 81.

Reagan, the bastion of freedom, who said aids was only for homos, and supported brutal dictators all over the world, which eventually lead to Osama Bin Laden.

And fired the PATCO members. That was the point that was relevant here. Everything else is politics, and therefore debatable. But the fact is Reagan fired the striking air traffic controllers. That's the only reason he was brought up.

I'm saying that if there is another strike, expect the same. You can be against or in favor of that outcome. Take any side you want. But I really don't think Pataki will hesistate to fire everyone who strikes if the TWU walks out a second time.

Do you know for a fact that he has this power?

TemujinKnick @ 12/22/2005 10:50 PM
The MTA for a fact has that power, yes. As has been said many times during this strike, the board acts in line with what Pataki wants more often than not.

Cuz he appointed them.

So you are in favor of this? You are infavor or the ruling class doing what it wants to its workers and you are for all of them getting fired and replaced if they chose to fight for what they deserve and future employees deserve?

you have to make it personal for him to get it. some people are just blind until it happens to them.

So the answer is no, Pataki does not have the power to actually do it, only to recommend it.

Maybe this is beating a dead horse...above some folks were writing about surly treatment from transit workers. It has happened to all of us.

I have been spending a lot of time on the bus lately and guess what? I have seen tons of poor treatment of the transit workers by the riding public. Sometimes many times in one ride. I'll let you do the math, who do you think gets treated badly more often, any one transit worker who comes into contact with thousands of people a month, or you, who comes into contact with a transit worker occasionally?

I would venture to guess that the transit worker has more bad experiences with private citizen ass-holes in a week than any of us has had with ass-hole transit workers in our lives. So by the time you get treated badly, chances are that the transit worker has had his/her fill that day of poor treatment.

Try thinking of someone else and cut the TWU worker some slack.

I can can give examples of both sides of the story.

When I was in High School there was this bus driver that used to bypass my stop almost everyday. It was just me there and I went to catholic school and I was a skinny guy back then....hardly a threat. Sometimes he would pick me up and sometimes he wouldn't. He was an asshole. Thing is the only reason I was out there was because it was 5:30am and I was trying to make it to school for detention at 7am. So I got tired of getting in trouble in school and getting shafted so I ran through the projects to meet him on the other side, ran up the stairs of the bus and I Bruce Lee drop kicked that mofo!!!! I cleared the pole and got him right in the jaw. I stopped on him a few times too. A passenger was like "That's that kid he always leaves! Good for you son but you gotta get outta here" So I took a cab and rode my bike for a while. I have assaulted a few buss drivers in my day.

Since I have been a conductor......I have been spit at alot. Mostly kids, butalot of adults do it too. I've been called all types of names. Pus sy, ass hole and stupid mofo are some of the daily things I get called. People get mad if you leave them but on the platform but sometimes at a crowded stop you have to get those doors closed as soon as you get an opening. Alot of times you hold the doors and then the passenger will hold the doors for their family that is still buying metro cards. People don't think but if I hold the train just 2 minutes for you and yours, what happens at the next stop and the next one? If the train is delayed even a 30 extra seconds per stop you will wind up clogging the line 20 minutes by the time you get to the end of the line. Then people will spit at you if the train is late.

People throw shit all the time. Glass bottles, screws and rocks.....you name it. It's just part of the job. I personally don't let anything bother me unless someone is just acting up for no reason. I try to stay as alert as I can because anything can happen at any time and there have been so many instances that I can get into that I have to deal with on a daily basis.

High stress is part of the job. People in general deal with stress differently.

People say conductors are nasty if you ask a question. You got to realize that the conductor has only a few seconds to answer your question. If you want an in depth answer then expect to get ignored and the train will move. If you ask where 2345 broadway is then expect to get a smart reaction to that. Broadway goes from lower manhatten till you get to the Bronx. How could a conductor know that?

I dunno. I'm just giving my two cents. I hope everyone appreciates it.
nykshaknbake @ 12/23/2005 7:24 PM
Enough! Dude, you are making 47-52k. Lots of folks make less than you. Stop with the whole oppression, master and slavery BS! This isn't some noble crusade for the survival of the hard working sweatshop worker! You wanted an 8% raise for 3 years. That is outrageous!!!!
