Shef is done. No roids, no more shef. The man was held together by chemistry.
Giambi was young enough to get it back.

It pisses me off b/c Bernie was having a nice year and Melky has been playing out of his mind. Why are we even going after Abreu? I thought it was obviously pitching that was the concern. I guess it's not. I guess RJ is going to magically going to turn 27 tommorrow.
I love Bernie, he has been my favorite Yankee, but he has been awful defensively, and awful v. RH pitching. Melky shouldn't be affected by the move if Torre is still sentient.
Bernie:
v. LHP: .397 .505 .902
v. RHP: .289 .389 .678
He can still be the RH DH, which is the role he is best suited for.
hmmm the guys on espn made a good point. You can force Sheff to play 1st base. What a lineup that will be eh! unfortunately Bernie will be the odd man out. then again Bernie gets hot late in the year so whoever is playing better will play
this is a coup for Cashman & the Yankees... yes, Melky's having a good year & Bernie's been solid, but you can't pass up a deal like this, especially when you're not giving up any of your top prospects to get a guy like Abreu along w/a solid #4/#5 pitcher in Lidle... you can DH Matsui when he comes back because you don't want to risk him getting reinjured, so Melky stays in the lineup & plays LF... it's when Sheff comes back that you run into the issues, but Joe T will deal w/that when the time comes...
somewhere Ben Afflecht's whining again, i just know it.

Damon, Jeter, Arod, Giambi, Abreu, Sheff, Matsui, Cano and Posada. Um, sickest lineup in major league history?

every single one of those guys are phenomenal hitters and clutch guys escept for #13..his name escapes me...
Even if Sheff and Matsui come back this season, it's unlikely that they will be at full strength. I wouldn't want either in the OF because neither were very good defensively even before the injuries, and I seriously doubt that either would attempt to dive for a ball for the remainder of this year.

Maybe he could DH and hit 9th?

It was a salary dump. Still Cash did a good job of not giving in to what the Phillies originally wanted and ended up giving an older middle relief prospect and 3 guys who are very much projections and are several years away from contributing, if they ever contribute.
Abreu seems to have decided that the hit the majority of home runs left in his career in last year's derby. But we're talking about a guy with a .420+ OBP who's a good deal over 80% on stolen base success rate. A guy you can slip into the lineup in several spots. Another guy who draws out longer pitch counts will make it easier to hit for everyone around him. He'll have a major impact.
Corey Lidle isn't anything special, but he's got pretty good control, and he's only had one game all year where he didn't pitch at least 5 innings. He'll take a lot of strain out of the bullpen. And he's got about a run lower ERA post all star break over his career, so hopefully he'll be giving some quality innings.
The deal does a lot to help the Yanks over the short term. I'd like to grab a quality middle reliever by the end of the day. Maybe the Cubs would part with Howry?

Would Sheff be better at first than Giambi? They both don't cover much ground but Giambi's at least good at scooping balls in the dirt and at least has experience at 1st.

oh right I forgot about giambi. sheff will be forced to DH. Its gonna be so nice having Sheff or Bernie pinch hit
Yankees just traded Chacon for Craig Wilson 1st baseman from the Pirates. I don't get it? why did they need another 1st baseman when they have Giambi & Phillips?
Craig Wilson is a huge upgrade over Andy Phillips. Very solid hitter who can play OF, 1B and maybe even some catcher in a pinch. For the price of Chacon and his 7.00 ERA this is an awesome move. Wilson's bat will also be big off the bench as a pinch hitter in the playoffs.

it deepens our bench... he's an offensive upgrade over Andy Phillips... hitting against lefthanded pitching & w/runners in scoring position he's batting over .300 for the season, & this playing on a sorry team like the Pirates all year... he offers more versatility than Andy too since he can fill in at RF too, so that makes Aaron Guiel expendable (he's been optioned to AAA)... it's another no brainer... all they had to give up was Chacon, who was absolutely putrid this year.
If the Yanks can get Sheff to play 1st (remember he once played short and third) you can pencil them in for the next two World Series. The lineup would be:
CF - Damon - L
SS - Jeter - R (sleeper MVP?)
RF - Abreu - L (leads MLB in walks)
1B - Sheff - R
DH - Giambi - L (3rd in walks)
3B - A-rod - R (step it up you loser)
LF - Matsui - L
C - Posada - SH
2B - Cano - R
Bench: Wilson(1B,OF), Cabrera(OF), Cairo(IF), Bernie(OF), Bubba(PR)
forget Bubba... you need a backup C so Fasano takes his place on the roster.
& i'd lighten up on ARod... the guy's still putting up some very good #'s for just about any other player in the game... he can never live up to the expectations some Yankee fans have it seems.

Anybody who defends A-Rod just isn't watching the games. He wasn't the MVP on his own team last year, Sheff was. Baseball is all about situations. Getting that walk that frustrates the pitcher, fouling off pitches until you hit that blooper into center. A-Rod is just awful when it matters. Its not just fans overreacting. He's bad. More than that he wastes the efforts of Damon and Jeter who are incredible in front of him. I wish they would move him back in the lineup until he can get his act together. When Sheff and Matsui come back, he'll be lucky if he bats in the top 6.
Anyone who continues to BOO ARod when it's clear that only makes him press more resulting in worse results in clutch situations is not a real Yankee fan... anyone who continues to harp on ARod's "disappointing performance" after every single atbat needs to find a new hobby to occupy their time... they obviously aren't interested in the overall results of the game if every postgame comment is centering on how ARod did that day... i didn't hear anyone booing Jorge when he struck out with the bases loaded last night, did you? i did hear some knuckleheads boo Bobby Abreu though after he grounded out in his first Yankee atbat... makes you wonder how anyone could ever call us Yankee fans "the greatest fans in the world".
i dont get why the yankees keep going after hitters and neglecting their real need, pitching.

They're moving Sheffield to starting pitcher and Andy Phillips to setup man. Relax...

I guess it's because there's just not enough pitching depth that teams want to give up. Good starting pitchers are like good NBA big men: teams are in no hurry to give them up.
the pitchers that were available aren't worth their asking price... a guy like Zito would take trading away your top blue chip prospect... why pay that high a price when the guy's a FA at the end of the season? an acquisition like Cory Lidle is a very smart move on the part of Cashman, because you just need someone to eat up innings in the #5 spot in the rotation... w/Wang & Moose established as our aces at the top of the rotation, we are in good shape... Unit is the 1 guy that concerns me in this rotation, but we have no better options available to us, so we just have to hope he can give us some solid starts going down the stretch & in the postseason.
in the offseason, we have many options open to us via free agency... you can target a topflight guy like Jason Schmidt, or go for a solid #3/#4 type guy like Gil Meche or Ted Lilly... or if u want to bring Rocket or Andy Pettitte back, you can consider those options as well... or just wait til Phil Hughes gets called up & make due w/Moose, Wang, Unit, Wright & Pavano next season.
