I can't think of anything else that matters if this happens. Clearly the warning signs are out there. It made me more conscious of how I live my life and made me think about how I will live from now on. It's not about getting depressed, it's more about being conscious about yourself, looking for renewed inner strength and who you are as an individual and how you, as an individual can make a difference in your environment. This is kind of why I dissapeared for awhile.

The movie 'Day After Tomarrow' and the childrens animation 'Happy Feet' also hit on these issues.

Is that a movie?
nattydreadz @ 1/20/2007 5:09 PM
yea, i saw it. its a shame that we will not do a damn thing about it. everyone is concerned about the economy and living in the moment. everyone wont be around when some really serious things start to happen. its just so sad that everyone knows what the hell is going on....and yet things remain the same.

Have you heard of Amory Lovin? He is an energy efficiency expert, and an optimist. I just read an article on him in the New Yorker which, unfortunately, is not available for free online. But google the guy, and info and articles on him will appear. He talks about ways for the U.S. to be oil free by 2045 and make money doing it, and he is the designer of a light-weight car. I don't know a lot about him, but he is one hopeful voice out there that I just discovered. (A smiley face in a global warming thread. Go figure.)

The film is about you, I and everyone else. It is about us as individuals, and how we as individuals can make a difference. The only thing I can do is to recycle, try to buy products that is said to be environmentally friendly and most importantly, tell as many people as I can. As far as being oil free by 2045, that is way too late, because according to what the film is telling us, this is when the caps will be completely melted and the oceans will rise by 20 or more feet. This means much of New York City will be under water for one thing. I was enlightened by the fact that 'insurance' companies are starting to see the impact of damage that has been going on, more recently with 'Katrina' and how they are going to be a part of the work horse that forces industries to stop putting all of this crap into the atmosphere. That is very encouraging. I have a friend who's wife bought a car that runs on a rechargible battery, that charges itself, every time you push down on the break. Fascinating! But all in all, if you guys see the film and without panicking and without being worried about it for the rest of your life, it's really just a matter of telling others of this film and maybe being a little more pro-active about it all. The beauty of this movement isn't about religion (even a lot of churches are having concerns about this issue) or politics or anything else, other than the fact that it is about the planet we live on and how we should think about it and live on it. Not anyone human being is responsible for all that is happening, so not one person can turn it all around, but we as a race of people, human beings, can act by contributing and changing minds one at a time. We have roughly a ten year window to 'begin' to make that difference. It is a fact that the caps are melting and they say we need to change our ways now. If you have children, then it would be in they're best interest to start thinking about these things. There is also a lot of useful information as to what you can do to make a difference. To me, getting the word out to as many people as possible is extremely key to pulling things out of our atmosphere. If you have not seen the film yet, see it. For me, I have to say it is probably the most important film I have ever seen. And if you watch it, watch it again with the director and producers commentaries. Thers is also some updated information in the special features section.

Good luck.

As of right now, people with deisel engine cars can run their car off of purely cooking oil.

I met a guy up state who was driving a car just like that and was trying to start a business setting up other cars with deisel engines and vegetable oil. Lovin's car is made out of the same material as a bike-helmet, so it only weighs half as much, requiring a lot less energy to move it forward.

One of my kids recently heard about how global warming could cause an ice age and she freaked out. You would ask her to do something and she would say, "Why bother? There could be an ice age on Tuesday." And she was serious. It was depressing her. I read at the Inconveniant Truth website about how the methane from cows causes global warming, so we've stopped eating red meat and drink soymilk instead, so that we personally won't be responsible for extra cows being raised. So now my kid feels better and she'll put away her laundry and go to school when she's told to.

Sorry to hear she freaked out! I don't want all of this to freak people out. It's about being more aware and making some alterations in ones habits. Panicking isn't going to help anyone, so tell her to look at it with a little more confidence. All that we are hearing is a warning. It doesn't mean it's all going to be over soon. I think whether any of us like it or not, Goverment and business are going to have to change our lifestyles sooner or later. We won't even notice it. So it's all good. Nothing to freak out about.
