I thought 'Drag me to hell' was cool. Definitely campy like Jazz said, but in a good way I thought. I laughed in some parts - I though Justin Long was pretty funny. Think 'Stephen King's Thinner,' with a little 'Exorcist" and a lot 'Evil Dead.' If you like horror like I do and liked any of those movies, you'll enjoy this..

Thought 'Paranormal Activity' was cool too. Not the best horror movie I've ever seen (for me that honor goes to 'Exorcist III' - that movie and the book it's based on, 'Legion' by William Peter Blatty, are both top shelf horror imho, with Kubrick's 'The Shining' coming in 2nd followed by 1980's 'Salem's Lot' and the original 'Amityville Horror' - all of those flicks still scare the shit outta me even though some are pretty dated now) but it was definitely a nice little creepshow. Call me crazy but I dug the chick in this flick a lot. I thought she was cute & very real. I like how they didn't go out and get the hottest chick they could find for the role. The guy wasn't bad in it, a little too macho for me which I thought hurt the overall realism just a tad (come on, the first sign of real terror I would've been outta there, I'm sorry). Getting compared to 'The Blair Witch' and while that was cool, this is even better..

yeah, you are right. the girl i thought was very cute. looked typical and that is what you want in a movie like this. you don't want jessica alba in a role like that then it is unaccessible to the veiwer and highly implausible ( though i wouldnt have mind. lol.) the movie did explain why it didnt matter where they went, it would follow. it must be love because he stayed even after she started acting weird instead of going.

Oh no, I would've stuck by my girl, you bet, I just wouldn't have sleep with the door open, I would've listened to the paranormal expert that came to visit with much more of an open mind, wouldn't have provoked the entity the way he did, etc.. And I would've got outta that house pronto after the first sign that what we were experiencing was real. I guess there wouldn't have been much of a movie then. LOL..

also i did like your list of scary movies. i remembered two scenes from your movies you mentioned. in "exorcist III", i remembered the nurse checking the rooms and all of a sudden, the killer appeared behind her. i jumped so high because it was so unexpected. then in salem's lot, the morgue scene was one of the most nerve wracking and suspenseful scene i have seen. two great movies.

Absolutely! That hallway scene in Exorcist III was definitely the shit. So were the many dialogue-driven scenes, esp. the ones between George C. Scott and the Gemini Killer. That whole movie was just awesome. Just goes to show that you don't need over-the-top special F/X and blood flying all over the place to scare people. Such a great sequel... Yeah Salem's lot was so scary when I was a kid. Couldn't sleep for days...The morgue scene you mentioned, the vampires at the windows, the whole showdown in the end with Barlow in the house. The story, the acting, the makeup, David Soul...Great stuff...

the christmas carol- first of all, i am a big fan of the story and saw most of the adaptions from the one in the 40's, to george c. scotts ( my favorite) even the muppets. this one with zemeckis is not the worst but not the best either. jim carey was decent as scrooge and the other ghost but pretty forgettable. the story sticks to the novel thought bare boned in a way. however, the animation is convincing like beowulf and some of the new "twists" are interesting though my favorite spirit, christmas future, was a big letdown. the emotional aspect of the story works well though with tiny tim and cratchet. recommended but dont expect the best results.

2012- as far as disaster movies go, this follows formula with some twists, especially glover's decision as president, but still a memorable entry in the genre. much better than "the day after tomorrow" with the destruction ten times as much and characters that are passable. i liked glover as the compassionate president in line with pullman's performance in "independence day", another emmerich movie that was probably the best out of all of them. cusack, like always, lifts this slightly above formula because he is a gifted actor. the sfx were spectacular and intense. cant wait until it comes to blu ray! however, it did have problems. some of the scenes were beyond plausible even for this genre. i realize that you have to check your brain at the door for this movie but hey come on! also it was WAY too long. this had the run time of dark night/ harry potter proportions and for a disaster film, that is a half hour too long. nevertheless i still recommend this movie.

i liked 2012 overall... like u i found it a little cheesy at spots how the amateur pilot could navigate his way through all that destruction, or even why he was flying so low to begin with, but those scenes showed off the CGI effects pretty nicely... the movie turned into the Poseidon Adventure towards the end (u'll see when u see the movie)... didn't think i'd like John Cusack in this role, but he delivered a pretty good performance & fit the character & the overall tone of the movie well.

the more commercials i see for avatar, the more i want to see it. tell u what: it is a movie made for HD period! book of eli is interesting since i am a hughes bros. fan anyway and this is the first film they did since the underrated "from hell". also nxt year will be the year i will go back to seeing many movie. iron man 2 is coming out which should be awesome with war machine in tow. the new poster looks bangin! also, since i am an 80's baby, the remake of "clash of the titans" is probably on my most anticipated list also. i loved the movie as a kid and i remember medusa scaring the crap out of me! this looks like they are taking a more brutal approach and it might be rated r which is spectacular for a film like this.

TMS @ 12/7/2009 2:43 PM
wow, never even knew they were remaking Clash of the Titans! i loved that movie too bro... but watching it today w/the primitive claymation style just doesn't do the movie justice, i'm glad they're gonna redo it, but i'm sure the overall fantasy adventure feel of the movie just won't be replicated in the new one if they choose to go a darker more brutal approach w/the new one... i hope i'm wrong... that movie needs to keep that feel of the interaction between the Gods & humanity & shouldn't just focus on the CGI effects & gore... any idea when it's gonna be released?

i think it comes out in march, around the weekend that 300 was released a few years back. i agree that the movie is very dated now but still had that fantasy adventure feel that is hard to replicate in today's standards. they could still make a good movie dealing with the interaction with gods and humanity but with brutal violence since that was the period they lived in. as long as they do not overuse the gore and use it as part of the scary elements then it should be fine. but i can see that caution is thought of since we dont want them to "starship trooper" this movie. and as long as they keep that dumb robotic owl bobo out of it, i am good.

lol... i actually liked bubo the owl. :P

one thing's for sure, they won't be able to replace Sir Laurence Olivier as Zeus, Ursula Andress at Aphrodite & Burgess Meredith as Ammon

Yeah I like this movie too. Still remember seeing this in Mr. Alio's 7th grade English class...LOL.

I think Shutter Island looks pretty awesome.

Avatar looks decent but I am not in love with the CGI movement in films. It does appear to have a good story line though and I am a James Cameron fan.

Tron Legacy looks sweet too.

jusnice @ 12/11/2009 12:43 PM
Avatar getting great reviews. I hope the CGI doesn't make it overblown and the acting poor, but I'm excited to see it.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Director James Cameron's long-awaited "Avatar" wowed critics at its London premiere on Thursday, with some early reviewers calling it "jaw-dropping," "mind-blowing" and a game-changer in Hollywood for its digital effects.

The 3D epic adventure by the director of 1997 blockbuster "Titanic" is one of the most expensive films ever at a cost of about $400 million to make and market. It begins its worldwide launch next week, hitting U.S. theaters on December 18.

If initial reviews and Twitter buzz are any indication, it may be money well spent for film studio 20th Century Fox.

"James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world," raved showbiz newspaper The Hollywood Reporter.

"As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is 'Avatar,'" it said.

Britain's biggest-selling tabloid, The Sun, called it "the most dazzling film of the decade. ... The final battle scene is 20 minutes long and absolutely mind-blowing."

"Avatar" shows the forest-dwelling Na'vi fighting for survival against a colonial mining operation bent on stripping their planet. A crippled ex-Marine is chosen to make contact with the mysterious people as a remotely controlled avatar.

Empire magazine gave the movie five stars out of five, calling it a "hugely rewarding experience" whose new technology "will give directors ... one heck of a sandbox to play in."

Twitter lit up with comments from journalists leaving the tightly guarded premiere. "James Cameron is a freakin' genius! I can't say much but wow, I loved it," wrote Alex Billington of the movie website FirstShowing.net.

The London Guardian's Mark Brown wrote on Thursday that "Avatar" was "really much, much better than expected, (it) looked amazing and the story was gripping -- if cheesy in many places."

"The terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialized. It was good," Brown wrote.

Russell Crowe as Robin Hood. Ridley Scott directed. Looks like a winner to me.

just came back from watching avatar imax 3d...

thoughts:

the new 3d technology is amazing...like wow...everyone was oohing and ahhing for a good half hour with the 3d previews and the movie. the effects are worth it to go check out.

but the movie was about 1 hour too long (it's nearly 3 hours) and the story was simplistic and kind of cheesy.

if you're gonna go watch it, watch it in 3d...

avatar- i dont know if i can give a totally accurate review because when i went to watch this movie, i was exhausted and found my self nodding off. however, i have to admit that this was probably the best cgi i had ever seen and the world he created was gorgeous. the avatar cgi was seamless with such a range in emotion that it was amazing. nevertheless, the story is generic and not original. if you saw "dancing with wolves" then this story is not original. to say that this movie is the best of the year is really overrating this movie. it is a decent movie but not the best of the year and certainly not the best of camerons work.

inglorious bastards- there are a few directors that seldom disappoint. spike lee is one and tarantino is the other. he continues to impress me here. the funny thing was i was getting worried because the commercials and trailer made it look somewhat campy. however, the movie is spectacular and has my vote for the movie of the year. tarantino's detail to dialogue is outstanding though most of this movie is subtitled. even though this will anger history buffs, this is a good portrayal of nazis as calculating villains not buffoons like some movies portray them as. the main nazi villain is probably the best film villian of this year. highly recommended and top three movie of the year.

TMS @ 12/27/2009 5:53 PM
i agree, Inglorious Bastards was 1 of the best of the year by far.
TMS @ 12/27/2009 5:58 PM
looking forward to this one too... i love vampire flicks

Martin - no. The 3-D technology is first class. I saw it this weekend in a regular 3-D movie, not IMAX, and it was awesome. Tremendous perceptual depth into the screen as well as figures sometimes coming out of the screen in front of you. The special effects were incredible; the plot held my attention but was a little simplistic - a very feel-good type movie but interesting and fun. 2:40 min went by very quickly. Great action scenes. Acting also very good to excellent. I think the lead actress Zoe Soldana deserves a nomination for best actress.

saw "Avatar" last nite in Imax 3D & i gotta say it has to be one of the best movies i've seen, not only for its awesome visual effects (definitely see it in Imax 3D if u haven't already), but i found the story to be well constructed & the characters all very likeable (or unlikeable in the case of the villains)... story almost reminiscent of "Dances With Wolves" in many respects... i really enjoyed it & didn't think it ran too long at all... if anything i was left wishing the movie would keep going... hope there's a sequel to this movie... "Return to Pandora" would be a movie i would never miss.
