Now I know what flushing $13.50 down the toilet feels like. Next time I want to go to see a movie, I will opt for the flushing because it will save me time and provide a healthier intellectual stimulation. Aesthetics aside, this ranks as one of the most blatantly insulting films ever made.
how was it insulting to you? what did you expect when you went to see this anyway? a tear jerker? i thought this movie was right up there with the LOTR trilogy flicks in terms of cinematography, production & special effects... storyline & characters were obviously not on the same level as an alltime literary classic epic from Tolkien but for what this movie was meant to be i thought it delivered in spades.
The message of the movie was too much to the left for the blobman. There were obvious references in the movie which some would consider disparaging to the previous President, Mr. Bush, and the way the military was portrayed might have also bothered the blob, although if you remember the beginning of the movie, "Jake" indicates that the guys on Pandora were more like mercenaries (think Blackwater in Iraq) than Marines fighting to protect freedom. Add to all of this a negative portrayal of capitalism, and perhaps a critique of Manifest Destiny (which included the uprooting and cultural oppression of the Native Americans, and the near extinction of the buffalo), and you have a movie that a good conservative had to hate.
There are many interpretations and I am not inclined to go into my own, but it's safe to say that, whichever side you look at it from, it is insulting. Let's take the blue natives. Cameron, in his simplification of the plot, robs the natives of a genuineness, a completeness of character by making them 100% squeaky clean good guys. Even that is insulting in itself.
I will give it this: if you're ever looking for a movie to watch while on a mushroom trip, this is it. I can't even imagine how cool it would look on shrooms and in 3d.
taking a humanistic approach to trying to reason why an alien race was portrayed as a peace loving culture is flawed anyway... that's the whole point of the movie... they're NOT human... they didn't have violent tendencies motivated by greed... this was not a political statement against the past administration as much as it was a social commentary on the human race... throughout our history there are examples of 1 dominant culture conquering, taking & stealing from a weaker one out of greed... it also showed how we strip the earth of its resources without even thinking of the repurcussions... this is inherent in our thinking... we take without asking, we use without thinking... if Avatar effected u this way, u must've had the same exact reaction after you watched Dances With Wolves... it was based on the same exact premise.
I didn't come to this humanistic approach randomly. The movie went to great lengths to show the alien race in a human way. I don't know if we are as brutal to the earth as this movie makes it out to seem. Have we hurt the earth in the past? Sure, but not on purpose. It was a case of not knowing any better. Now we know better and move on.
Really? Who exactly is we? You think everyone is protecting the planet? A little naive aren't we?
What! You mean that we're still exploiting Mother Earth for her resources?!
According to blobman we are no longer raping Mother Earth because we know better and we can move on.
Hey, if you feel so strongly that we're 'raping' mother earth, then I suggest you give up your computer, internet connection, automobile, house, etc., and go live in a cave with an animal skin over your body. You see?
There MUST be some level of exploitation (in the good sense, not the unfair sense) of the environment in order for humanity to keep advancing. The challenge of the 21st century is to do this with minimal side effects, I guess.

All I know is that if blob didn't like the movie, then I absolutely have to see it.

Moderation is the word, Mr. Blob. We are taking, but not giving back to the earth system, and many fear that we have reached a point of no return.
And we could have many of the things you mention above, but still be more responsible custodians of the planet. No species has done more to alter the ecosystem that we (mankind) have in the past 200 years, and you wonder if we have reached a point of no return.
Cameron is from my generation, those born during the midpoint of the "Baby Boom." We were influenced by the 1960's counterculture, and the ideas which came from that generation. Cameron is definitely anti-big corporation/the wealthy in his films (Look at The Abyss, Aliens, Titanic, etc.), although I have no idea if he is in bed with any corporations while he is criticizing others.
These sentiments show up in his writing and his movies. Nothing to do but to enjoy or ignore.

Saw it in 3D too. Pretty amazing experience. My girlfriend is really giving me hell because she thinks that I have a crush on Neytiri.
come on, u know u were looking for alien nip slips the entire time.
Neytiri was played by Zoe Saldana. She also played Uhura in the latest Star Trek movie.
"Played" is a problematic word do use is this case.
Only as the voice and the person who had the electrodes put on her so she could make the movements that would be used to do the special effects magic of the movie.
Saldana is a natural beauty, but I am more attracted to blue skin females at this time.

Rented District 9 last night, then followed up by seeing Sherlock Holmes today.
District 9 - I know A LOT of people loved it, and several of my friends tried to get me to go on one of their many trips to see it in theaters. Didn't care for it. Started off like a mix of The Office, Cops, and any crappy movie off SciFi you care to pick. The visuals of the prawns, their mothership, and weaponry were great, but the movie started off so slow. Granted, it did pick up towards the end, but I was already bored by then, almost shut it off. I've just accepted that people think the movie is very well done, it's just not for me. 5/10
Sherlock Holmes - Very fun movie. With the exception of Rachel McAdams, the acting was terrific across the board, and even she wasn't HORRIBLE either. Loved how they showed Holmes planning and analyzing every move before he did anything. Movie is a little long, but it definitely didn't feel like it. 8.5/10

I appeciate your honesty. I am one of the ones that love the movie and have it a 9 or 9.5/10. District 9 has the Sci-Fi thing going, yes, and does the documentary thing too... but this movie isn't The Office + Independence Day. The movie is a social commentary on South Africa's apartheid government. It suceeded in explaining South Africa's history to all because instead of telling blacks and colored they had to move from their district into a worse one, they had people of all color to say the same to the aliens or prawns.
The film is brilliant in that regard. Just so happens to have sci-fi and action elements. The movie was about more than that though

I just watched District 9 Last nite and was really blown away by it. I thought the interview and documentry aspect of it made for a very real senario not often found in Sci Fi.
I found much of it very interesting and thought provoking beyond most movies of this type. The ship hovering above was a "dark cloud". So many references in this movie!
Excellent!
I hope they have a "District 10" planned. Maybe Wikus becomes the new Mandella? Ship returns to rescue? Why did they come in the first place? What about the smart ones vs. the worker ones? Great sound track moment was when the big ship woke up
Avatar was a big movie and visually stunning. I liked it and would rent the DVD. I was a bit long. 3d was cool.
I guess we can all look forward to the Broadway production of "Avatar" and eventually "Avatar on Ice!".
The American Indian believes in harmany with the earth. It is their faith but science does not substantiate this. IN the movie, that planet and those trees were hard wired together and that species fed off it. Its sci-fi so they can go anyway they want to with the story.
Given their ability to wage war, had rallying calls, and other skills its apparent they might conflict with other tribes. Funny thing was they had horses yet lived in the trees in the rain forest? Only thing that bothered me was when Jake got left at night and they left proclaiming him as not able to servive why did they not immeadiatly wake him up? Just thinking.
NYKBocker@ 1/6/2010 11:15 AM
^ I think they were worried about the Avatar and not Jake.

I saw Avatar the other day and it absolutely blew me away. Im liked DIstrict 9 a lot, but not like this. I am definitely going to go see it in 3d while I still can.
I have to side with TMS on this one as well. I felt that this movie was more so directed towards humanity. Making selfish and greedy decisions with regard to nothing. Judging a race or species of animal or some kind of human population without getting to know them or learning or thinking twice. The lesson of how powerful just a select few people can be or the persist. The appreciation for Nature.
This whole movie I felt was incredible. Didnt think it was a direct hit to our military or the Bush administration at all.
Nalod@ 1/7/2010 10:36 AM
Avatar was classic good vs. evil and the Blue tails were nothing more than low tech natives not depicted in any reality. They don't get ill, they never run up and down 3,000 foot branches and never slip and fall, they don't eat, don't have houses, don't have to prep food or hunt, there were no schools, none seemed pregnant, didn't have babies, didn't have to farm, or tend to the horses who must fend for them selves as they lived in that giant tree, and all the nasty things in the jungle does not bother them, nor the blue tails if they are in the tree.
It was a fantasy story with Geo. Bush, no communist overtones, and no democracy.
TMS@ 1/7/2010 1:34 PM
actually they did have a house, they lived inside that huge tree, & they did hunt (remember that scene where Neytiri & Jake killed that alien buck?)... they had schools too, remember the backstory about them learning English from the human scientist expeditions, & there were little children aliens so obviously they had babies.

Killed the buck, but not for food. Never saw indvidual quarters in the tree. I might have fallen a sleep for 5min during the movie.

they slept in those plant hammocks suspended in the branches... & they did kill the buck for food... they didn't show them eating it but they were clearly a hunting culture, not an agricultural one... they killed the buck & Jake administered its "last rites" & apologized & thanked the buck's spirit for the use of its body.

Yeah. These were obviously fantasy creatures/ blue people, but they had their needs. Just bc they didnt show them eating doesnt mean they dont eat. They did however, show them die, which is a part of life.

they showed them having bukkake session too... they're obviously cool aliens

Learning that TMS gets turned on by Blue People during their intimate sessions makes me wonder if hes the only one here like that. Perhaps OBM is hiding something beneath his rage towards this kick ars movie.
