Also, I thought "No Country For Old Men" was tremendous. I think some might be dissapointed in it, but to me it was great. Amazing tension, great cinematography, and one of the most interesting screen villains ever created, as played by Javier Bardem.
I want to see this REALLY bad... I heard the ending sucked, but overall it was a great movie. I love those eff-with-your-mind movies. And this one is going to leave the theaters likely in a couple of weekends.

I am Legend was a mixed bag...very entertaining, suspenseful and visually impressive in parts, and then totally unrealistic and ridiculous looking in others.
Kind of what I been hearing. I'll wait for the DVD thank you.
The concept of "I am Legend" is supposedly a ripoff of "Soylent Green," which is an awesome movie if you can deal with a 1970s Heston movie. If you liked the former, check out the latter.

BTW, here are the top 10 movies that I saw that were released in 2007 and could be considered at Oscar time (though some of the best movies don't always get that kind of consideration). I still haven't seen a bunch of stuff like Ratatouille, Perseopolis and Diving Bell, so take it with a grain of salt:
1) There Will Be Blood
2) No Country for Old Men
3) Once
4) Zodiac
5) Juno
6) The Bourne Ultimatum
7) Away from Her
8) This is England
9) The Wind that Shakes the Barley
10) The Namesake
Honorable mention to Eastern Promises, 310 To Yuma, I am Legend, Superbad, Hot Fuzz, Grindhouse, Talk To Me and The Simpsons Movie
Did you Sweeney Todd? I have no idea what to expect, but the Burton/Depp combo is appealing (as always).

I went to see Sweeney Todd in December. First off, let me just say that I despise musicals. With that said...I am buying this movie as soon as it's released on DVD. It was kind of a mixed bag, during the movie there were a few times I found myself bored in the song, but the movie left me wanting to see it again, and I even came away singing a few of the songs.
Depp gave a brilliant performance in the movie. This movie alone made me a Johnny Depp fan and I went out and checked out some older movies like Secret Window and The Ninth Gate.
I saw Rambo. Brought back memories and it was quite good. Hardcore violence. 7.5/10

Nice and thanks... if you haven't seen much of Depp, I'd have to recommend "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" (one of my favorite books and a great movie), "Donnie Brasco" (Depp + Pacino), and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" (don't let the terrible title fool you)
well, its time to bring this thread back since the summer movie season will start in two weeks when my movie "iron man" opens. saw plenty of movies since the last post but i will talk about the recent movies i rented:
the mist- not a typical monster/horror movie as you know most steven king movies/books are. this movie was disturbing which was the whole purpose of the movie. the monsters they show are convincing and frightening but not as frightening as what the people in the store become in those conditions. in this movie, character development is used not as fodder but a tool of terror which worked perfectly. screwed up ending though. good movie but i still like the book better.
hitman- fan of the videogame and most of these type of movies fall flat on their face ( double dragon, mario bros.?). this one was suprisingly interesting but unoriginal. seemed to have borrowed from many spy/ esponiage movies. timmy olyphant was good as agent 47 and even moved the same way the character did in the game. a lot of action and some twists though not suprising.decent movie.
invasion- when i was little, i thought "invasion of the body snatchers" was one of the scariest movies around. the concept of being replaced by a symbiote personality was original with many copying the concept over the years. so this is like the 10th remake of the original movie. they succeeded in modernizing the movie to relate it to current events though they try to make the audience sympathetic to the plight of the aliens which is different from the other movies. decent movie if you do not have anything to wathc.
eastern promises- my first russian mob movie that i can remember and it was good. mortenson embraced the role and did it convincingly with a great accent. watts was alright but this was no question viggo's movie. good movie.

There Will Be Blood- Just complete and utter brilliance.
It kind of skipped from one decade right into another, but it was a very well made movie. Great story, really enjoyed it. Daniel Day Lewis certainly earned his oscar. Long over due. The kid preacher, who was slapping him in the face, you just knew he wanted to get up and kicked the shit out that piece of crap. Funny as hell scene!
Also saw:
The Brave One - excellent acting.
Elizabeth Golden Age - I really liked this film (the costumes she wore where stunning).
Rendition - Very good.
No Country For Old Men - Slightly methodic, but still enjoyed it. Keeps you tense on the edge of your seat.
The Invasion - The third remake, this time, with Nicole Kidman. Surprisingly good, and in the features, discusses the films theories vs. theories of the first two. Very interesting. Check out the special features section.
All of the above, recommended must sees
Beowulf - Was disappointed that it was an animation and had very limited space to work in. I kept looking at the king, wondering where I saw him before. Yes, it was Anthony. Fooled me. I didn't realize he was in it.

Lets put it this way- I thought this was a much better performance than even Gangs of New York, and certainly one the 2 best of his career.
You were absolutely correct on that. Great performance!
Just saw another film called 'Uncel Killa'. About an ex-con who gets out of prison and is trying to help his family member make it out of the ghetto. Not bad really. Don't bother getting any pop corn though. It's only 15 minutes long. Looks more like a trailer.
Has anyone seen "The Visitor"?
i saw two movies, one was great and the other was bad:
1.) alien vs. predator requim: though i wasn't a fan of the first one, i did not hate it either. thought it would be better if it had an r-rating. so this one had an r-rating so it should be good right? WRONG! i could have made this film over a weekend. the action was in the dark THE WHOLE TIME. i could vaguely hear what was going on but couldn't see. it was like they took the camera in a closed closet and shook it and created sound effects. garbage. its a shame because i am a predator fan.
2.) iron man- i talked about this briefly on another iron man film thread. this movie was very good, a nice start of the summer movie season. rdj was incredible and it won't suprise me if he is mentioned as a possible oscar nominee. however, it is a little short on the action but purposely because we want more for a sequel. the sfx was perfect and the storyline was good. a little overrated as i rank spider-man and x2 better than this concerning the genre but still recommend it.
"88 Minutes" = awesome. Al Paccino just doesn't dissapoint.
I checked out a bunch of movies recently:
Lust,Caution its a movie out of Hong Kong I believe which was subsequently banned in China because of its sex scenes. If you enjoy a good psychological/political thriller you must check this movie out. It starts off a bit slow for the purpose of laying out the groundwork of the plot but once it hits the meat of the film it gets very intense. I would definetly put this movie up there was one of my favorites that I've seen this year.
The Black Book: To me this film is similar to Lust,Caution both are WW2 spy thrillers but with more depth then just your run of the mill spy film. I thought the ending was a little funky but overall I liked the movie.
No Country for Old Men: The movie itself was okay only because the scenery just didn't grab me and the other lead character left me a bit cold. But Javier Bardem made the whole movie worthwhile. I think his villanious character ranks up there with Hannibal Lecter.
The Orphanange: Its a horror film but if your a blood and gore fan this isn't the movie for you. If you like good old fashioned Ghost stories this is a great movie for you to check out. The movie doesn't just deliver your chills but also hits you emotionally.
Gone Baby Gone: I went into this movie not having very high expectations particularly when I found out Ben Affleck directed it but was pleasantly surprised. The ending a just a complete moral dilemma that is good for after movie discussions.
latest movies watched:
SHOOTER (starring Marky Mark) - basically a Bourne Identity wannabe plot, but worth a rental if u like action flicks
FORBIDDEN KINGDOM (starring Jackie Chan & Jet Li) - lame, lame, lame... pretty much Karate Kid meets Big Trouble in Little China, only not as good as either... cheesy fight scenes & corny humor... Jet Li should stay away from comedic roles if he can help it... save ur coin unless u like cheesy kung fu movies & campy acting.
CURSE OF THE GOLDEN FLOWER (starring Chow Yun Fat & Gong Li) - nicely shot & good battle scenes, but the plot is a little too twisted for my taste... worth a rental tho to see the copious amount of cleavage that's featured in this flick
THE WARLORDS (starring Jet Li, Andy Lau & Takeshi Kaneshiro) - AWESOME movie! if u'r a fan of historically based war movies like i am, you will enjoy this one... very good acting, awesome storyline & the battle/fight scenes are nice & gory just the way i likes em... this is like a Saving Private Ryan shot in an ancient Chinese historical setting... i think u'll only find this one at an Asian Movie rental store, & u'll need a coded DVD player to play the disk unless u pop it into your computer (my friend's Vista player was able to play the disk w/no problems)

I checked out National Treasure (no actually I was forced to watch this movie)
And I am Legend
National Treasure cann't stand Nicholas Cage and felt the plot was kinda of dumb not connection from the beginnig to end
I am Legend: Reminded me a lot of 28 Days Later but visually it was incredible. But felt that the movie was missing 45 minutes left a lot plot holes.
God, i absolutely hated I Am Legend... i thought it was boring, the plot was completely ridiculous & Will Smith was annoying as the lead character... woulda made a much better video game than a full length motion picture
National Treasure was aight... worth a rental but not going on my alltime favorites list anytime soon.

Iron Man was enjoyable... i recommend u go see it... Robert Downey Jr. was great as Tony Stark... there's a short spoiler clip for the sequel after the credits roll, but the cameo appearance was badly cast if u ask me... Clint Eastwood or Mickey Rourke woulda made a much better fit for the character.
saw two more summer movies:
speed racer- saw this on IMAX. i thought it was good. not much of a story and it was quirky but it resembled thed cartoon. it did its job as a living anime. warchowski bros. definately know how to direct action. the racing and action was awesome.
indiana jones 4- this was very good. it was great to see the team back and that nostalgic feeling of my 80's youth come back. i love vintage spielberg who is the best at directing sfx movies. the action and sfx were incredible. i love how they pay homage to the time period with the "red scare" and how it affects indy who must adjust to a different world. i do think that the villian was weaker than all of the others but it is still the third best of all of the movies ( which is good because i did like the temple of doom).
just saw Kung Fu Panda tonight... Jack Black wasn't as annoying as i thought he might be... i enjoyed the movie & the CGI animation was on point... kids will love this movie but there's still enough to entertain the adults too... a good star studded voice cast.
'Wanted' review
Went to go see this flick at the Grove today with my buddy & his wife. Doesn't phase me to be a 3rd wheel whenever I go there cuz there's some DAMN NICE eyecandy walking around everywhere. Going down the escalator his wife tells me I was getting the slick eye checks from a weak looking chick with an old lady hairdo & a puke green sweatervest. I'm the fuggin' man.
Anyway, here's my review of the movie. Definitely recommend you go see it.
Awesome action & inventive plot. Angelina Jolie is hot in this one & James McAvoy was great in the lead role. The gun shooting sequences were well done, felt like I was watching a John Woo movie. Only criticism I'd have is that the action sequences were so crazy they were completely unbelievable, but obviously that was the entire point of the movie.
