An MLB I'm intrigued by is Daniel Ellerbe- he had a injury as a sr. that slowed him down, but he's super athletic and has been productive in the past. Could be a sleeper.

what makes u think Laurinaitis will be a bust? just curious... i've been hearing good things about him for weeks & Mel Kiper seems to be high on the kid.

He's extremely slow and the production of Ohio State LB's has been remarkably inflated relative to their actual production in the NFL. He's not all that physical and he never made as many impact plays as he was touted for. Doesn't mean he didn't make a few sacks and TFL's, but he's just another one of these Ohio St. guys that was talked about a lot on TV, but didn't really live up to that hype.

Rey Maulaga was definitely a more impact player. I would look to the SEC for my MLB prospects. I also think the Giants are gonna be interested in a guy named Connor Barwin from Cincinatti.

A popular rumor in Houston for the Texans is if the USC LBs are off the board, they'll trade down and grab Laurinaitus. Think that logic might apply to a few other teams

Though, I have no real opinion on him as a pro prospect

Sound like Giants will get Braylon before the draft...
Citing two sources "with knowledge of the negotiations," Yahoo Sports reports that the Giants are expected to trade for Braylon Edwards before the April 25-26 NFL Draft.
"The Giants are going to have to up the offer a bit, but (the Browns) are willing to move him," a source said. "The Giants are motivated." Edwards is an ideal fit to replace Plaxico Burress at split end in New York.
VDesai @ 4/14/2009 3:23 PM
Right now they want a 2, a 5 and Steve Smith. The Giants should counter with a 2, a 5 and Sinorice Moss.

Totally agree Des. No chance in hell I'm giving up Steve Smith, the dude has some of the best hands I've seen in a while.

It may come down to Smith or Hixon which is a really hard choice IMO. I think Hixon has more upside, but Smith is more dependable. Ideally we could keep both and continue to work Smith in the slot. I don't know if Manningham is ready to play a lot of time on the outside.
TMS @ 4/14/2009 3:49 PM
how about we pass on Edwards & just keep the picks... there's an idea... just cuz they want a 2, 5 & Smith doesn't mean we gotta give it to them... i'd counter w/a 3, 5 & Moss... if they don't wanna do it then screw it... keep the picks, draft the best WR & LBer u can get ur hands on & let's get the season underway... we can always weigh our options later on... no reason to give up all that for a WR who seemingly dropped every other ball thrown his way last season, i don't care how good he looked playing the Giants last year.

He had an issue with drops but he is still a gamebreaker (as we saw in the game against us). He is certainly worth a 2 and a 5. Giants have a team that can win this year and can't really afford to wait for a reciever to develop. They need a real no.1 threat right now. And they also have several more picks than potential roster spaces- I think they definitely need to make a move.

To me, it's a no brainer: give up Hixon. Hixon's value is as a return man, and having him in the passing game limits the skill set.

Steve Smith is a money third down receiver. I don't see Hixon as ever becoming more than a third down receiver either... so why not just keep the guy who already excels in the role?

And I can't see anyone wanting Sinorice Moss. The dude's a bust.

No way... the Giatns don't need depth. What they need is top-end talent at the receiver position. The team will not find a WR with Edwards skillset in the second round, nor will they find a WR that can contribute immediately. Edwards vastly underperformed last season, but he commands second and third level respect, which is why the loss of Burress hurt so much.

Not to mention, as has already been mentioned in this thread, what's the point of drafting players simply to cut a player?
TMS @ 4/14/2009 5:10 PM
i don't view Edwards as top end WR talent so we'll have to agree to disagree here... he put up some nice stats but a WR w/suspect hands is pretty much useless to me to fill the shoes of someone like Plax... if we're giving up multiple picks & 1 of them as high as a 2nd rounder along w/another player, we better be getting back someone w/reliable hands as well as athletic ability... otherwise like i said i'd just keep the picks & weigh other trade options later.
SupremeCommander @ 4/14/2009 5:15 PM
Well, I don't see anyone after Crabtree that has a chance of matching Edwards production this year or future seasons. And let me rephrase my opinion for Edwards: top-end *available* talent (the GMen won't be able to trade for the Calvin Johnsons of the world)
nyk4ever @ 4/14/2009 5:24 PM
Theres two things with Edwards.

1. he drops a ton of balls
2. he has various attitude problems

To me, those a pretty big red flags.

I'm not saying I wouldnt take Edwards, I'd just be real careful about what I gave up and to me Steve Smith isn't in that package.
TMS @ 4/14/2009 5:25 PM
personally i'd rather have a guy who might not necessarily put up quite as much stats as Edwards but that i can rely on to catch a big pass in a big game & hold onto the ball while taking a big hit... that's what Plax brought to the table & that's the type of guy we need to look for... if we can't get that, then just hold off & don't jump at the first big numbers guy that comes along before weighing that intangible factor, which in any WR is a hugely important one to consider... hell, Domenik Hixon can get open downfield if he wants, but he dropped a couple huge passes last year that really hurt us in some key games... i don't wanna trade big assets just to see Edwards do the same.
SupremeCommander @ 4/14/2009 5:34 PM
yeah, that's what Plax brought to the table, but Pittsburgh didn't retain him for a reason. His red flags where attitude and concentration based.

The Giants are going to have to cut some draft picks if they don't make a deal. Edwards had one elite season, and otherwise has been a bust. Same with Roy Williams. Williams is better than anyone outside of Crabtree, maybe he's better than him too. His issue is he doesn't have big balls and doesn't seem to care if he's the man or not.

Well, I'd say Edwards is the same type of talent as Edwards, so to get him for a 2nd, 5th, and a guy that has trouble beating single coverage is an absolute no brainer to me. I don't care if Edwards isn't a super-productive player, the fact is he is a touchdown threat and corners need to jam him, and linebackers and safeties must account for him on the field. This is going to get players out of the box and let the team's running game excel again.

The team needs a WR and this is clearly the avenue to go about getting one and remaining a contender. This team sucked when it lost Burress and the LB corps was exposed. To get a WR like Edwards, essentially in the second round, means the Giants can focus on a first round LB or a BPA if someone falls. Simply by acquiring Edwards the team gains flexibility in the first round

Edwards productivity to this point is very similar to where Plax' was when we got him. However, Braylon had 16 TDs 2 yrs ago- there are very few players who have ever done that in the NFL. He has superb talent.

People will gameplan for Edwards and it will stop teams from putting 8 or 9 in the box. That will get us back to our bread and butter of running the football

I don't doubt that Des for a second. Edwards, when on his game, is a top player in this league.

Would you do the 2,5, Steve Smith deal? I wouldn't.

Update...
Profootballtalk.com hears that a Braylon Edwards trade to the Giants is unlikely, despite two reports to the contrary.
PFT suggests both sides are "posturing," with Cleveland leaking rumors to drive up Edwards' market, and New York holding out "until the Browns drop their asking price" and Edwards his contract demands. The Browns are said to be asking for Mathias Kiwanuka. Edwards wants to be paid $10M a year
