the 96-00 teams never had a guy like a-rod on the team. i understand the hole in the lineup and all the #'s and what not but who cares, don't let the door hit you on the way out.
fact of the matter is you don't win world series rings w/ classless cowards like arod on the team. nobody likes him, he hurts chemistry, and he simply will not win a ring. if thats the goal, its good that hes gone.

Lets not forget we are new yorkers man. Who gives a damn about a-rod. Mister may. Nyc don't need him. Yanks were great without him and never needed one player to carry nothing.
Same goes for posada and mariano. Posada had the nerve to get mad at mid season then shoots blanks in the playoffs. Mariano wants roger money but wanted to say it in the media like a bitch so he can go too.
Gotta keep it gully around here......joba is a terrific reliever. Yanks can pick up paul la duca from the mets to replace posada.......nyc needs to clean house of all bitches.

IT sucks, but it sounds like he really doesn't want to be here. Still I think something can be done- Boras knows deep down that the Yanks are gonna give him the most money.
The backup plan at 3B is Betemit. Betemit can hit righties but is crap against lefties. May want to bring in a righty bat to platoon. The only other 3b option is Lowell and he's an older guy you won't want to committ a lot of dollars to long term.
Andy Phillips can platoon w/Betemit at 3B until they find a suitable replacement
i have no problem w/ARod being about the money after the season he just had, but the way he went about this is pretty disrespectful & disingenuous to everything he said all last year, that he wanted to stay a Yankee & that he didn't want to play anywhere else... if that's the case, why not even meet with the Yankees to discuss an extension when he had 10 days to try & work something out? what type of message does that send to Yankee fans? that he didn't want to be here, bottomline... so with that in mind, i say to Hell with him.
Still not very high on Betemit, I think his hitting is considerably overrated for a guy who has been consistently under .250 for a few years now. After all the hype VDesai gave him, I was thoroughly disappointed. That being said if, we had a platoon at third but improved our pitching, I might think our team actually improved.

I thought Betemit was very productive when he first came over and got more consistent at bats. Then for a while he hardly ever played or got 1 AB here and there and never got in the swing of things. Then when he got a few starts at the end of the year he had a couple multi hit games.
He still gets on base and has some pop- against righties his numbers are solid, but he's been useless against lefties. He's still reasonably young w/ upside.
he's a utility guy... i don't think the Yankees will go into the season w/him as our starting fulltime 3B... but then again, we went into the start of this season with Will Nieves as the backup C, so there's no telling what's going to happen.

There's just not a lot of options out there in FA unless the Yanks want to trade their young pitching- which is not going to happen right now. And they'd be better off taking their lumps and letting those guys develop right now and then take the opportunities as they come along.
i don't mind going through a rebuilding year next season as long as there's a plan to go into 2009... we can't feild a rebuilding team w/the new YS opening up... they have to decide now to go hard & fast after Johan Santana & really shore up the bullpen w/some quality arms.... in the meantime if it means going w/a platoon of Andy Phillips & Betemit at 3B to start the season, then that's what we gotta do.

Arod says he does not know the status of yank FA's yet one thing you know is they will compete year in and year out!
The guy is a selfish prick and I am really suprised he is this shallow. I figured he matured a bit.
We have learned we can't get to the Series WITH HIM so while he maybe the best regular season player (MVP) I think we continue on the youth movement and be patient.
Regarding Riveria and Posota I love those guys but maybe its time to move on. I do hope they come back and nothing they have done will ever be taken away from Yankee fans if they move on.
Steroids usually have weird affects on guys like a-rod. It makes sense that he makes no sense.

i think this is good.
the yanks are in major transition both upstairs and on the field. with the new steinbrenner's in charge, this could be a bad thing but i'm excited to usher in the next era, regardless of the outcome.
I like that outlook. It might even be a little bumpy before it gets better again, but we been through it before and we've seen the fruits of success time and time again. History is on our side. Yankee pride!

if you're waiting for one to come up through our farm system, it's going to be at least 2 more years before Tabata is ready for the majors... he's projected as a Manny type talent.
my pick is to give Shelley Duncan more AB's next year at 1B & have Phillips & Betemit hold down 3B until a better solution comes along, unless they can get Lowell via free agency, but i think BOS will resign him.

Three big power hitters and it was the 80's all over again. Except the only difference was, they at least got us to the playoffs.
So with that said, I say build the team fundamentally again and don't go out spending big time bucks on useless showoffs anymore. It took George twenty years to learn that lesson and we fans should know this by now ourselves. Go with the farm. Go with your base. Yankee history will show that our success has always been our farm systems. Look it up. Gehrig, Dimaggio, Mantle, Yogi, Ford, Ruffing, Guidry and many, many more through the years, combined with key acqusitions like Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Don Larsen, Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Paul O'Neal, Scott Brosious and others. We've always 'bred' our world series champions from scratch. We are not a franchise that buys' the world series that we've been accused of. Go to the farm is what we should do.

our success has been predicated on key FA acquisitions as well as the farm system... we can't just focus on 1 w/o addressing the other... that's how the Yankees built their dynasty in the 90s & that's how the Red Sox have built theirs this decade.

Point is, find them in the system first and then get the pieces needed. But that's not written in stone either.

Theo made a couple of very key trades that really catapulted their team to both titles in '04 & '07 (they got Curt Schilling, Orlando Cabrera & Dave Roberts for their 1st championship run, & Beckett & Lowell last year)... he gave up a couple of very good young prospects to get the latter deal done, but it netted them a championship, so u can't complain about that... these are similar types of deals that the Yankees swung in the 90s when they went & got key guys like Paullie, Tino, Nellie, Lloyd, Brosius, Knoblauch & Justice which were key in building their dynasty during that run... the Yanks haven't made a smart trade of that nature in years because they've been too busy trying to make a huge splash w/bigname acquisitions like Mussina, Giambi, Unit & ARod... we need to get back to that type of building a team mentality where the parts actually fit & complement one another... ARod was a glamorous acquisition that put a lot of butts in the seats, but didn't net us anything when it's all said & done... i was 1 of his biggest fans while he was here but he really proved he was as fake as many people said he was w/the way he lied through his teeth all year long about his love of NY & being a NY Yankee & then not even listening to any offers for a contract extension.
