Good deal but omar manaya has a depth and youth problem. He's gotta spend some MORE money.
how do you figure? Where is there a depth problem?
You said it yourself, Pelfrey (3-8 5.58 ERA) is the Mets insurance when, not if, they need starting pitching help. And they have nothing in the minors.
Pelfrey was brought up very early and didn't get much minor league play. He has shown improvement and had a 4.88ERA for the second half of the year. I know, i know, Kennedy is so much better and more proven, Hughes is going to be better than Santana, and Chamberlain is the next Rivera.
Do you trust Pelfrey to pitch a big game in September or October?
As a Yankee fan, I completely trust Kennedy, Hughes or Joba.
Would you trade Pelfrey for any of those 3 young Yankees pitching prospects? I'm sure all Mets fans would.
Honestly, I wouldn't trade some of the second tier Yankee pitching prospects for Pelfrey.
Pelfrey is still yong. Now he can go back to the minors and work on his mechanics and when he gets the call up again he will be better prepared. I am also hearing that the Mets will now considering signing Livan Hernandez sending El Duque to the bullpen.
TMS is gonna have to change his name. May I suggest TMWSC?
this is a great trade for the mets. they basically swapped glavine with johan. not a bad upgrade.

The Mets Will Still Choke?
Catchy. I like it!

funny you mention that since he had a pitched a big game in september against ATL and went 6 inning giving up 1 hit and 1 run.

sure, hughes or joba. who knows what kennedy is going to be and pelfrey has better stuff than him.

First 5 threads on the official Minnesota Twins message board:
FRUSTRATED
I think I'm going to Throw up :(
Smith caved at the end
I am NOT HAPPY with this deal
SMITH DID NOT GET HOSED
The last one was obviously posted by the misterearl of their board and was promptly filled with posts arguing differently.
How funny would it be if it really was misterearl and this guy spent all day defending every GM in professional sports on message boards!
I'm glad that Cashman and lil boss stood their ground and got grown on the Twins ass.
The Yanks young arms are plentiful. So are the bats. Good times a coming. Now If they can slowly blend these young guys in and refrain from chasing the Giambi's , damon's and Arods of the world.

Now watch santana pitch like glavine from last yr. METS Are a joke! METS=My Entire Team Sucks
Met fans will not see a championship until the mets leave NY. No room for 2 teams. We all know Yankees rule!
So funny how Yankee fans have to keep announcing to the world how great they are. Nobody cares. Before this trade, you were telling us how crappy our farm system is, so I guess we gave up crap to get one of the best pitchers in baseball. According to Yankee fans, Omar just pulled off the biggest heist in the history of baseball.

Uh, you basically did give up crap for Santana. The Twins GM backed himself into a corner thinking that he could get the Yankees and Red Sox into a bidding war. He failed miserably and Santana wanted this deal done now so the Twins were forced to take the only offer on the table at that point. They couldn't wait until the trade deadline because they knew Santana would just become a free agent and let the Yankees and Red Sox, amongst others, get into a real bidding war knowing that they wouldn't have to give up prospects as well.
It's going to be interesting watching the Twins GM, Bill Smith, explain why he accepted less from the Mets than he was offered from the Yankees and Red Sox.
As for Yankees fans, I think most of us feel that this is the best case scenario. The Yankees don't starphuck and keep their promising young pitchers, while the Red Sox don't get any better. Win-win for Yankees fans.

Wow.
I'm really glad the Yankees stuck to their guns and kept Hughes and Kennedy.
I'm also glad the Red Sox didn't get him.
word... giving up Hughes & Kennedy for Johan, no matter how great he is, woulda been a hard pill to swallow.
depending on the deal that Santana signs, we'll see how great of a deal this was for u guys... obviously in terms of talent you make out by miles & miles compared to the crap you gave up... but how durable is Johan gonna be over the last 2 or 3 years of his deal is the question... he's been 1 of the horses of the AL his entire career so it's not such a huge concern, but 6-7 year deals hardly ever work out over the long run when it comes to pitchers... still, it's a deal Omar had to make... his team was in need of a #1 frontline ace starter in the worst way imaginable... they have an old gimpy Pedro coming off yet another injury & a 50 yo Duque who's got durability questions of his own... other than Maine & Perez they really had no reliable arms in their rotation... now they've got 1 of the best, so good for them... i'm very happy to hold onto Hughes & Kennedy & not seeing Johan in a Red Sux uniform.
If you're Santana, why wouldn't you ask for $25M a year for 7 years? What are the Mets going to do, say no?
Santana and his agents have the Mets by the balls.
u can bet i'd be asking for that... Omar had to have known it too, so obviously he's willing to go for broke here just like he did when he signed Pedro to that ridiculous 4 year deal when everyone knew he'd never stay healthy over the duration of that contract... they had to make a splash to take some of the sting out of that monumental collapse last season... their fans needed some reason to get excited about their team again.

Can you imagine the backlash if they don't sign Santana now? Neither can I. Santana can name his price and Omar and Fred can only say "Thank you for not asking for more".
in the end the Muts got the best pitcher in the game, so can't say i blame Omar for making this deal, no matter how much it's gonna cost them... i hope i never hear another bitter Met fan complain about the Yankees gobbling up all the high priced talent & about "competitive balance" ever again.
Look at you 2 clowns taking shots at the Mets on a day when they acquire possibly the best pitcher in baseball. Stick to worrying about Crap-rod and his 10 year 4 billion dollar contract.
look at you not realizing i was saying it was a good deal for the Muts to make... but i know u like to like to get overly defensive whenever a Yankee fan posts on a Met topic so if it makes you feel better, ur team still sucks... there, happy now?
i notice i don't hear you crying about competitive balance anymore... hmm, strange... oh right, that argument only applies when it's a Mut fan complaining about how the Yankees buy up all the big name talent every year... gotcha.

All you've been doing in this thread is taking shots at the Mets. Thats like your "thing."
How much money did Kiddie Warbucks dole out in bloated contracts this offseason? 500 million?

And lets remember, Johan will be making 13.25 mil this season. Thats only 2 mil more than Glavine made last year. Then after this year, El Duque, Pedro, Delgado and Alou will come off the books. Fernando Martinez will replace Alou in left for cheap. We have Church and Endy for RF. The only position we would really need to fill is first base unless someone emerges from our minors which is definitely possible. So with the money coming off our books, we're not really expanding payroll much at all and there is a good chance our payroll will probably be less next season.
Mets payroll after this trade is around 126 million.
Yankees payroll around 206 million after arbitration and they still have some roster spots to fill
