Sounds like Shockey really gave em no choice- from Mike Garafalo:
MG:
"We were kind of hoping he would get over it and change his mind because we weren't really looking to trade him," said a high-ranking team official, who asked to remain nameless because the Giants haven't publicly discussed their thought process or how the trade came about. "The Saints held firm (to their offer of second- and fifth-round picks) and with camp set to begin we felt it was best to trade him."
The chances of Shockey showing up to camp weren't very good in many folks' opinion. And the same people believed if he eventually showed up, he would have been a distraction the team didn't need.
"He was practically begging to be traded," the team official said. "He just didn't want to be here anymore. We just felt if he came into camp with that attitude he would be disruptive and it would be a problem."
Kind of like Marbury. A giant distraction.
Yeah, but he hasnt gotten 1/100th of Marbury's bad press. But I guess winning is the all-purpose deodorant. At least I hope.
I cant believe all the hate that Shockey is getting right now.
I wonder if you all are going to feel this way and when the Saints run over the NFC and their new offense. Drew Brees made A. Gates a pro bowler, not the other way around.

You dont think he's a head case?!? He basically forced the Giants into making this trade, you his cousin or something?
On top of that, the scales are tipping on the negative side between his productivity and the problems he creates
Shockey was a good player. Coughlin never properly utilized him the way PAyton did. Shockey always played hard and was a great run blocker despite being a big play guy. The other stuff is overplayed IMO. I am very happy because his salary will open up other things for us, those are good picks to a team that uses the draft as well as any NFL franchise and while Shockey was an impact player he couldnt stay on the field.

Shockey is a very good TE but the thing that people forget is his antics affect Eli in a negative way. This is Eli's team and what Shockey did was hinder Eli's decision making. When he didn't get the ball he threw his hands in the air as to say WTF are you doing not throwing to me.
So who's Shockey again?
Giants won a superbowl without him.....they did good by trading him. After they improve this season....those draft picks will do nothing but improve this team.....hopefully the Giants can make it a dynasty!
I think all you need to know about Shockey is that he was begging to be traded from the World Champions. He didn't have the patience or intelligence to make it work (whatever his gripe was to begin with, no one really knows).
damn, now i gotta trash my Shockey jersey.

i don't mind the trade cuz Shock was gonna be a PITA for the rest of his time in NY... he sealed his own fate... it's a shame he couldn't be a freakin' pro about things but that's just his personality i guess... i think Eli will breath a sigh of relief knowing he won't have to deal w/Shockey's constant complaining any time he doesn't get the ball when he's open... & i used to love Shockey, but his act grew very tiresome & the Giants could very well be better off w/o him at this point.

Same here bro.
Shockey was my favorite player in the NFL until last year, but even before then I was starting to get sick of his whole deal. Since the day Jeremy was drafted he bullied everyone in the organization, his teammates, management and even ownership (especially Eli) and when they won the Super Bowl with him watching, he realized he lost his juice card within the organization and once that was gone for him, he had to go, because thats the kind of asshole he is.
We'll see which Jeremy Shockey the Saints get. Shockey will drop some passes, but he will play with everything he has and you like that. We'll see how long it takes for Drew Brees to return some of the verbal assaults that I'm sure Jeremy will be throwing his way when he doesn't get the ball thrown to him.
i hope Ahmad Bradshaw stays outta trouble so i can invest in a #44 jersey.

What exactly has Shockey done to be called a head case?? Scream at Eli for over/under throwing passes? GOOD! Eli is a bum.
Its just funny that Boss makes ONE catch and all of sudden he's the next best thing....Dont get me wrong, I hope it works out for us (Giants fan), but I dont think it was a good trade
whether it was a good trade or not will be determined once we see who we get w/those picks... there's always plenty of good talent available in the 2nd round much less the 5th & we all know Reese does his homework when it comes to the draft.

I think we have to come to the grips with the Giants not having much of a choice here. Shockey wouldn't have come to camp. For being in that situation they did pretty well. The only thing they can be second guessed about was not making the move before the draft. But the Saints weren't offering more than a 2 and a 5 then either.
exactly, Shockey pretty much forced this trade... what were the Giants to do in this situation? they got whatever value they could get out of him, now they have to move on as do the fans... he was 1 of my favorites but the way he handled this situation was very immature if u ask me... if i can toss my Tiki jersey i can damn sure toss my Shockey jersey & turn the page... i dunno about any of u guys, but i root for the uniform.
Shockey's basically a manchild. I think he's partially misunderstood, but he certainly put himself in this situation and he didn't show any desire to make it work. Ties had to be cut. It was nice to watch him and he had some truly exceptional moments in Giants blue, but its time to move on.
The biggest reason the Giants were able to overcome Shockey's absence last year was b/c it coincided with the return of Steve Smith. If Smith can play 16 games the Giants will be in great shape. Boss will definitely step up his game this year as well. And don't sleep on backup TE Darcy Johnson.
That being said I wonder if the Giants would make a play for Chris Baker if the Jets end up moving him.
i was thinking about TD Maker too dude... great minds think alike it seems... what would u give up for him tho?
Des, TMS... can a player be traded while on the PUP list? The Jets put Baker on it today.
A rule in the National Football League which allows teams to designate players as "Physically Unable to Perform" or "PUP". Once they are designated as such, they are prohibited from practicing with the team. They can, however, rehabilitate and participate in team meetings. If a player begins training camp on the PUP list, they can be moved to the active roster at any time, even after one practice. A player is not allowed to be placed on the PUP list if they start training camp on the active roster.
A player who begins the season on the PUP list must sit out his team's first six games. After that point, the player is allowed to practice with the team through Week 10 of the NFL season, and can be activated any time within that window. If the player is not activated by Week 10, he must stop practicing and is unavailable to be moved to the active roster for the remainder of the season.
seems like if they put him on the active roster before the season begins, then there should be no issues... seems to me the Jets are just doing this to play hardball & force Baker to back off on his contract demands... probably not a good way to ingratiate yourselves to him & his agent tho.
TMS has the situation right. I think Baker will be moved before too long. Seems like a good opportunity to use that extra 5th we just obtained. But then again I'm not sure I want the Giants to meet what his contract demands are. He's a nice blocker at TE and can catch the ball a little, but 2.5-3 mil per is a bit much for him.
I'd take Baker in an instant, I like the idea of 2TE sets and Boss can block. I'm all for this route if they choose to go that way. I'll let Reese do his job though, he's doing an A+ job right now.
