Gallo's Max - Unguardable
by stuporman on Thu Jul 24, 2008 1:16 pm

I hadn't done much research before the draft this season compared to previous ones so after the Knicks selected Gallinari I really starting watching every piece of film available and poring over box scores, stats and the stuff written everywhere I could find it on the player.

All I have to say is at least D' and Donnie know how to draft for the system they want to run. It's refreshing for the first time in a few years that there is actually a system being run and then in the first draft it looks like there is some good ability to find players that fit.

At first it's easy to try and typecast Gallinari's style of play into a previous European player to simplify the process of understanding his skills and attributes but to do that to Gallo is nearly impossible. Sometimes he looks like Dirk other times Manu and then there are times when he plays with a style that is his own.

To say about a rookie player who hasn't played one minute of real NBA action yet that their max is 'unguardable' is a leap of faith in some respects I will admit but that's what he can become if the perfect storm of his career does occur.

When you consider his height and body control add it to the ball handling skill and shooting touch not to leave out his court awareness and solid all around skill there is very little to not like about his offensive game. His ability to adjust his body so often during his drives and even after his last foot plant is remarkable for a 6-10 guy. He looks unconscious with his pull up jumper at times employing a fairly quick trigger, a smooth crossover to free up space and with his height he'll be able to get off his midrange shot against anyone. His finishing around the rim is crafty even being able to stretch out and avoid the defensive pressure with last minute adjustments to get the ball up. If a player gives him room he drains in a blink from all over the place out to NBA three. Play him close and he won't have any trouble putting the ball on the floor using his height and maneuverability to angle his way into the lane even having the vision to split the defense. He doesn't have the blazing first step but he moves like a player 5-6 inches shorter. Even if he does get cut off from the lane he just calmly steps back and quickly sinks a spot up as if it's a free throw shot from 17-19feet.

No plodding at all, he moves his feet with grace, is nimble like guard's feet and his quickness while it isn't outstanding it's been exaggerated the other direction against him. He's actually quicker than people give him credit for. In such a fast game as in the NBA he's not going to be anyone you call quick but he's not going to struggle with quicker players at the 3 offensively. Defense is another story altogether. No question he's a SF with the ability to move to the 2 or the 4 if matchups allow. In fact he's a nightmare to try and matchup with for the other team.

He can also wind up being the type of player where a defense does everything right and he hits a shot that has people shaking their heads. He has that natural gift. The expiring shot clock, 18 foot, leaning, fading with three hands in his face, rip your heart out dagger.

He has the ability to become this type of offensive player if he works hard enough. I can't say for sure if he will become his ceiling that's up to him and some fate is also involved. The talent and skill is there, though. He might not ever be a great defender or rebounder but on the offensive side of the ball he can turn into the type of player that just is plainly stated....unguardable.“Playing the way how I’ve been playing, it’s not the way how I play”- Marbury

So what's Isiah's job with the Knicks now? Paid millions a year Euro scout? LOL!

That's why I like UK. The type of uncivil behavior displayed by Ignitowsky is frowned upon here.

ISLES was the most negative person here and we have a lot of that, but he was over the top with it.

It would be a hardcase, but i'd be willing to take it on :) I'd have to pullout all of my optimistic expertise and perhaps call on the Knick Gods for help in exorcising Isles hate demons, but I think it can be done.

Why did it take people so long to catch on to his act around here? Those guys jumped on him immediately.

Oh man, that was funny as hell. STFU and GTFO Ballboy?

I gotta admit though, as much as I like Gallinari, it sounded like Stuporman was talking about Lebron or Kobe. Funny, funny.

He sure doesn't belong at realgm. He's a true UK "gimmick poster".

Bring back islesfan!

I agree, bring him back. You know "STFU and GTFO ballboy" is guaranteed for at least 3 replies in the welcome back thread.

I don't agree. Let him remain in exile.
BlueSeats @ 7/24/2008 8:24 PM
I would rather be on a board with Islesfan than Stuporman every day of the week.
