I can use firefox but when I open Explorer it says a problem has caused this program to stop working correctly after about 3 seconds. Any clues?

when you start up your pc, if you open IE you get an error

do you have all the latest windows updates, which version IE?

I'd go to filehippo.com
and download ccleaner, clean the registry
and download spybot, immunize and check everything

you should actually use an even better registry program, like registry mechanic, but that program isn't free

Back up you data, format the disk, and reinstall.

Windows XP or Windows Vista? IE 6 or IE 7?
