different people, countries play under different rules. who are we to say that the Iraqis should 'write letters or vote him out'. it was a valid protest, culturally acceptable. i don't that it was shameful to them. we can't judge their practices according to our standards.

u seriously think if an American reporter threw his shoe at the Iraqi President during a press conference the Iraqi's wouldn't view that as an insult?

I can't stand the man, and yes he has deserved to get smacked upside the face numerous times, but not even I can cheer for a moment like this. Disgraceful.

i agree... it's wholly disrectful to our country as a whole to have some idiot throwing his shoes at our President, no matter how much u might not agree w/his politics... i don't think any country would appreciate an American reporter showing the same disrespect to a leader from a foreign nation.

I agree. This just lowers the respect level for the position even more and makes Obama's role even harder.
Obama is younger and quicker. I'm sure he'd be able to avoid any object that Bush can. I doubt he'd even be facing a similar scenario though anyway.

Obama would've blocked that shit and said "Get that shit outta here! Not in my house!"
Knicksfansince94 @ 12/14/2008 10:10 PM
i didn't say that.

keep in mind that we went into their country and imposed OUR way of life. the Iraqis didn't come here and tell us how to live. as far as being 'happy about disposing saddam', who says that they were unhappy? we can't go around telling people how to govern themselves, which is shockingly obvious now that our system has brought the world to the brink of economic collapse.

If Iraq's Prime Minister had started a war in the US in which hundreds of thousdands of US civillians had been killed, I'd hope Iraqi's would view a shoe-throwing incident by an American against the Iraqi PM with a sympathetic understanding of all that Americans had gone through.

Cultural differences. Thats like flipping a guy the bird over here.

The guy was not "Gel'n"!
Bonn1997 @ 12/15/2008 9:03 AM
Here's one quote by Bush from the speech. I don't know if this was before or after the shoe-throwing but I'd be tempted to throw my shoes at George after hearing this
"The surge is one of the greatest successes in the history of the U.S. military"

Yeah, from what I understand throwing shoes at somebody is the ultimate sign of disrespect in the Iraqi/middle eastern culture. Feet are considered filthy, and shoes are an extension of that filth. Thats why they wash their feet before entering a Mosque. This was a form of protest.

I'm okay with protest. I'm okay with everyone hating Bush. Not exactly a fan on my end. That being said, not a fan of anyone doing anything towards our president. It just opens the door for someone to do somehting similar or worse to Obama and all future presidents.

Bush has done a lot to discredit the country and the position. But I really don't wish and applaud further actions that cheapen the role of the president or even remotely threaten their health. I hate the guy, but I can't applaud this.
Knicksfansince94 @ 12/15/2008 2:30 PM
Shoe throwing is the ultimate insult in Iraqi society. What can you do? I am neither for it nor against it. It is hilarious, though, and I did enjoy it a whole lot.

Condi Rice:
Shoe throwing incident "is a kind of sign of the freedom that people feel in Iraq,"
It's comments like these that make me have zero sympathy for the president and his administration. Apparently anything and everything must be spun into a positive, no matter how absurd and desperate it makes us look.

Oh you haven't heard? Condi flipped awhile ago. She damn near openly campaigned for Obama and you couldnt wipe the smile off her face the day after the election. She's black again!

Plus she's female. Any hint of drama and thats the first thing they're trying to do. Shoes are comin' at you.

I remember her saying it was a historic day for America (or something like that) when Obama won but I don't remember her saying anything striking. I must have missed or forgotten what you're talking about.

Do you think that's spin or reality?

TMS is correct. We would never accept a reporter spitting on Obama because he was protesting his policies, so I can't see why we would be okay with this. The only reason we are okay with it is because we hate Bush, and the ends justify the means I guess. Once you open that door it's a slippery slope.

Yeah, but peep game tho, TMS. Here is the full quote before he let his kicks fly: "This is a farewell kiss, you dog, This is from the widows and the orphans"

This isnt about a disagreement of policy or an ideological pissing match. In 2006 it was estimated that over 600,000 Iraqi's have died since coalition forces arrived in 2003. Bush lied about the justification of declaring war. Now how would YOU feel if the situation was comparable on our end and our country was being occupied, our citizens were being murdered, and our way of life was being infringed upon. And to add insult to injury, their supposed justification was all a stack of bullshyt. From weapons of mass destruction, to the harboring of Al-Qaeda.

In Syria, he was hailed as a hero. In Libya, he was given an award for courage.

Condi Rice is doing whatever she can to quell the controversy w/this whole incident... the last thing the US needs is yet another flareup of tensions over there when we have all these economic issues to deal with... i don't think for 1 second that she condones this type of behavior.

we're talking about a news journalist here, not the average citizen... this guy had security clearance to be in the same room w/our President & his nation's leaders & he goes off & pulls a stunt like this... it's a disgrace pure & simple... like i said before Bush is lucky this moron wasn't able to strap a bomb to himself & sneak into that room instead, cuz i'm pretty sure he woulda done it... that's not a straight thinking individual right there.
Knicksfansince94 @ 12/16/2008 12:25 PM
Bush isn't a straight thinking individual, I agree TMS.
