Papabear Says

You can do anything with pictures. He just could have been clowning around. Who hasn't tried a little pot at one time in thier life. Thats what young people do. Remember his favorite artist is Little Wayne and the hip hop culture and I don't mean it in a negative way. I think that liquor, beer, wine, and smokes are just as bad or good!! Which ever you choose.

Unless it was letting himself be photographed...

I disagree. I believe it's cheesy.

bongs get you RIPPED, btw. If you only have a nug or a little bit of shake --- throw it in the bong. Also, for me weed is an aphrodisiac so...
sebstar @ 2/1/2009 11:20 PM
Oh, and another thing --- lets see the media roast Micheal Phelps like they crucified Josh Howard and others.
Killa4luv @ 2/2/2009 2:44 AM
I would have told them there was tobacco in that bong and I have nothing to apologize for. Keep it moving. U can't disprove that using a picture.
Andrew @ 2/2/2009 9:14 AM
If I'm not mistaken, the media did not crucify Josh Howard for his marijuana use...it was more for his comments at the football event/national anthem.

No way. The media lost its collective mind when Josh Howard admitted to smoking weed. I remember that --- he was a pinata at that point. The anthem stuff came later.

Seb, just say it. Then we can discuss it.

All I'm asking for is a little consistency. I dont do this kind of thing, but somebody needs to up the Josh Howard thread when he admitted to smoking the herbal, herbal. That will put what I'm saying in a little better context. There just seems to be a different verve and energy behind the collective tone of voice when a black athlete is caught doing something that is deemed wrong. I dont know, maybe its just me.

I'll say the same thing about Phelps that I said about Howard --- smoking weed is not that big of a deal and its an absolute joke that marijuana is criminalized. That said, Phelps is a fool. With perspective employers peeping facebooks and myspaces nowadays, I dont let people take pictures of me doing anything that could jeopardize my future --- and I'm a nobody. How are you going to let somebody take snaps of you taking bong rips when you are arguably the biggest star in the world and you've cultivated this boy next door image?

Either he was really flucked up, or he just doesnt have any damn sense. Remember, this cat is working on a DWI as well. I'm just spitting facts. You decide.

Nalod @ 2/2/2009 2:07 PM
Phelps can do the frat boy party thing because he does not have a pro contract binding him to a team and a league.

His sponsers might pull back, or find cause because of the economy and use it as an out, but he got TWELVE GOLD METALS and its an olympic thing.

Its not what Josh Howard did but what he said and FLAUNTED.

Hansbourough jumpin into the pool got lots of play and he was blasted. But he is an amateur athlete so he is not held to a financial commitment.

In my view Phelps is above it, but its differnt.

Statistically, there are more blacks in pro sports and they often come from a rougher part of town. The norms of smoking a little weed is no big deal, until your league or contract is in question and you have to adhere.

And yes, the Packman Jones and Michael Vicks of the world do take the balance of how the press treats others. These are big stories because they are star players.

Phelps is a huge olympian but his hitting the bong and putting out a slam dunk statement to defuse it in a matter of hours is the best way to handle it. He was not arrested, nor did he hurt anyone.

Its different.

Rothlesberger was slammed when he got into a moticylcle accident a few years back. So was Kellen Winslow.

Maybe its how you handle the press in the aftermath.

We weren't killing him for smoking weed. We were killing him for opening his big mouth and being a dumb ars. When people get caught, notice that people don't really give a crap but will say "Yeah yeah, another athlete getting caught with weed or having another DWI."

This was a little different. Not a racial issue.

Kobe seemed to get past his "Problem" and is now the best selling jersey.

A sign that his endorsement power is back up.
