Barack Obama becomes the first African American president of the United Stats

Mike Tomlin becomes the 2nd African American head coach to win the Superbowl as well as the youngest coach to do it.

I guess it means that it doesn't matter what color/race you are if you work hard you have a chance to succeed. Everything else is living in the past.

This comment has all the depth of a kiddie pool. Yeah sure, it is possible to win a 40-yard dash when the other person gets a seven-yard, head start, but...

The "living in the past" part is cheap. Its a thoughtless statement.

Agreed; I teach on interracial relations in my Introductory Psychology class. Although these are great accomplishments and our country has come a long way, we are very far from a color blind society. This is one video we watch and discuss in my class: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYQVDik69...

I don't know what these things will lead to, hopefully to great things in the future.

Wasn't Bill Russell the first in 1969 as player coach?

Didn't Al Attles do it in 1975 with the Warriors?

Lenny Wilkens coached Seattle in 1978?

Doc Rivers was the third black Celtic coach to win.

Racism exists. Get over it. Anytime there is a majority it exists. Beit Gender, religion or skin color. When a white man is in the minority he is discriminated against.

Power is achieved by economic leverage.

There will never be equality until there are equal number of people.

I think the success of black americans has given hope to a future generation whose self esteem gets propelled by role models succeeding. The past cannot be forgotten.

Jews have a long history of slavery and persecution. Its built into our education and religion. We don't forget, but its also about learning from it.
I would expect no matter how much success any race has they should never forget.

There is a price to pay for progress. Obama is carrying the torch for many who paid. And he will pay a price too. All presidents do, and I would imagine the first black one might have to pay a little more.

LOL my brother said the same exact thing!

My intentions for this post wasn't to talk about equality. But to brag about how we have been kicking the white mans ass lately.

I doubt the African Americans that I named above were the first African Americans to work hard in the history of the United States but yet 2 of them are the first, and one of them is the 2nd while the first was 2yrs ago. So what does that tell you!

United States has grown a lot in terms of racism. It still took George Bush infamous presidency for Obama to really be taken seriously. If Bush did just an average job as a president I doubt Obama would have won.

I agree with you, but I dont think that was because of his skin color. I think it had more to do with his being somewhat new to the scene and pretty liberal. He was a strong candidate even with those two factors working against him, but I think the Bush-fatigue helped him greatly.

The real election was beating Hilary, not bush nor McCain.
