Man, I'm watching this pre-game, final-four nonsense and its making me sick. These colleges are promoting this really lame P.R campaign where they are collectively shuffling their feet, looking down, and pulling their pockets inside out like they are so poor. They are getting hit so hard that they have to fire teachers, and cut other sports and student services. Yet, they are still handing out million dollar contracts, building huge arenas, and gorging at the trough of corporate sponsorship.

One A-hole tried to say that colleges compete with pro teams for top coaches, which justifies these astronomical deals. Difference is that the professional owners pay their players, often exorbitantly --- so where is the other money going? You're generating profits and cutting deals that are similar to the pros.

These are really hard times --- people arent trying to see colleges give out million-dollar deals like the one they gave Calipari (who was hilariously disingenuous when asked about his salary in this piece). They are generating a lot of money which is almost exclusively falling into the hands of the elite few. Its such a great hustle they have no interest in giving up, so they come out and launch a this pathetic pre-preemptive strike, snickering while they line their pockets.

I disagree with this one. I remember Uconn when it was an inconsequential "where is Yukon, in Alaska?", university. I used to go to games there when I was a young kid with my friends and they would play in front of 3000 people in a gym that leaked and the floor had to be mopped by ball boys in between trips down court. It was a safety school for all those in Ct. Now 20 years of Calhoun and Auriemma basketball has helped turn the University into one of the premier Universities in the country. Without them, many would still think that Uconn was in Alaska. At some point you have to reward that. If not, they won't come to your school and you will have to find other ways to scrap and make money. It's the classic case of spend money to make money.

I can't speak for all of the contracts of these college coaches, but in many cases they are truly justified. And when the coaches don't win and bring money into the universities they are quickly fired.

I agree that coaches can dramatically improve the profile of a university and impact their standing in the sports world...my whole point was that you cant claim poor mouth as a governing body when you are routinely handing out million dollar deals to coaches.

In addition, the fact that they are slashing student services to compensate for coaches salaries is incomprehensible.
