Do you do it? Is it morally wrong? Discuss.
GKFv2 @ 10/25/2009 1:07 PM
It's just wrong plain and simple. You are putting yourself and others at risk so you can read a stupid message on your phone. The message can wait. it's not more important than your life.
BasketballJones @ 10/25/2009 1:26 PM
I don't think it is safe to text or use the cell phone while driving. I think your eyes and your attention should be on the road. It might be okay when nothing is going on, but when you're driving, things change quickly, and a boring drive on a city street or the highway can change very suddenly into a life-or-death situation. You want to see that coming as early as possible so you have time to do something about it.

I was jogging in the park the other day and I had to laugh - there was a guy riding his bicycle with no hands, and he was texting. All his attention was on his device, he wasn't looking around. I think it was Orangeblobman.

Anyway, they did a study that says using a cell phone while driving is as dangerous as drunk driving. I'm not sure it's that bad, but anyway: http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-609034... Surely if we can't drive safely with a cell phone, we cant expect to be able to drive safely and text.

driving a car comes with great responsibility. texting while driving is an insult to this responsibility.
TMS @ 10/25/2009 4:00 PM
it's ok as long as you're not driving nude.
orangeblobman @ 10/25/2009 4:01 PM
lol...that's an entire batch of other problems
BigC @ 10/25/2009 6:53 PM
It's not a good idea. Too many accidents occur when people are not focus on the road.

What about sleeping, reading books, and watching porn while driving?
I think the last is extreamely unmorall... Other 2 just moronic. So is texting.

How can anyone justify texting while they are driving?? You are playing with the odds when you are talking or texting in a car.

I have a cell phone blocker, which I use to deal with students at my school, and inconsiderate people in restaurants or movie theaters. I am going to find a way to hook it up in my car so I can deal with anyone who cuts me off or is going 40 MPH in the left lane because they are on their phone or texting (probably not powerful enough, though). It is amazing how many times an erratic driver or super slow driver on the parkway is using a phone for one purpose or another.

Folks might also want to read up on the recent studies about cell phones (even cordless phones used at home)and brain tumors. Some scary stuff. I use the speaker phone and have bought a number of corded phones because of some of the studies I have read.

I cannot see any defense in support of texting or talking on a phone while driving. Do any folks here have a legit defense for sending a text message while driving?? I can see taking an important call and using a phone in your hand for a short period of time, but reading/answering a text message while driving is just plain stupid and inconsiderate.

fishmike @ 10/26/2009 9:11 AM
this is just an example of how people are stupid and need rules protect us from that stupidity.

I can go out, drink 8 beers and make the 3 mile drive home from the pub at 1am with no problems. Am I over the legal limit? Yes, but I see no problem with it.

Thats NOT the same as drinking 8 beers and getting on the highway and making the 45 minute drive in Manhatten. That is a major problem and is how people get killed. One is stupid and reckless, another isnt.

I will text a friend or someone in car if I need. Something like "on way" or "grabbing food, need anything?"
Again.. I see no problem with that. I am going to do it at a light, stop sign, etc. I also have no issue with popping the phone open and reading, which is about as distracting as changing the radio station.

Thats NOT the same as texting "hey girl.. I am heading out. Can I borrow your black shoes? You know the ones with the.." <CRACK> End of message as user just smashed into car in front of them.

There is a difference.

It sucks. I have never gotten a DWI or a ticket for texting or talking. I assuming I never will but the reason its not allowed isnt because its so dangerous. Its because people are stupid.

Maybe it should be illegal for old ladies to have a Bichon named Fluffy riding on their laps standing up on the wheel so they can look out while they drive and give kisses. Cause thats safe.

Problem is people are retards so the make laws to limit activities that retards should do, like texting and driving

Report: Stray jet's pilots were on laptops

An airline spokesman said Northwest has sent $500 travel vouchers to passengers of Flight 188.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
• NEW: Delta statement: "Using laptops ... will result in termination"
• NEW: Pilots have been suspended until investigations conclude
• Northwest says it's offering $500 travel vouchers to passengers
• Flight overshot Minneapolis by 150 miles; Feds interview flight attendants
(CNN) -- The pilots of the commercial jetliner that last week overshot its destination by about 150 miles have said they were using their laptops and lost track of time and location, federal safety officials said Monday.
The Airbus A320 was flying at 37,000 feet over the Denver, Colorado, area at 5:56 p.m. Wednesday when it last made radio contact, the safety board said.
Northwest Flight 188 had departed San Diego en route to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport carrying 144 passengers, two pilots and three flight attendants. Northwest recently merged with Delta Air Lines.
"Using laptops or engaging in activity unrelated to the pilots' command of the aircraft during flight is strictly against the airline's flight deck policies and violations of that policy will result in termination," Delta said Monday in a statement.

At a red light, that's one thing. However, if you're driving and you need to text, just pull over to the side of the road man if it's really that important. If you're saying "Getting food, want something?" just wait till you get to the store to say that, or before you start driving. I mean, everyone texts while driving on occasion, including myself, so I am really giving myself the advise too. But it's really pretty stupid and there's no need for it. It's dangerous.

I got hit a month ago. Son was in the back of the car. No real damage(small dent) but when I found out the guy was texting, I wanted to kill him. Please for the love of god, do what Allan says. Nothing is that important that you can't wait until you get somewhere to text it. None of us are the president and our decisions are not life saving. Pull over, or wait until you get to your destination. All this preaching seems like a hassle. "don't drink in drive", "don't text and drive" "friggin nanny state". It all seems like a hassle until you aren't paying attention you rear end someone, kill 2 kids, a husband, leave a widow paralyzed and alone. At that point the text "be there in 5 minutes" won't feel so important.
