Golf isnt a sport. Its a skill. He doesnt have anybody imposing his physical will or his or her skill against him. All he has to do is hit the ball in the hole.
I would be the least shocked man in the building if he won. He's the best, he should win.

you out of your mind son - after hitting a baseball, doing what those guys do with a golf club is arguably the second hardest thing in sports.

A sport is a competition against another or oneself. That is the definition of sport, and golf fits that description perfectly fine.
I didnt say it wasn't hard, just not a sport. SILENCE. cant talk or disturb them while they swing a club. LoL, thats puzzy.
And the metaphorical "competing against oneself" is nice and all, but I'd take that over hitting a slider thrown by a freak like Randy Johnson. Having to juke Ray Lewis, or having to body Kobe Bryant.
Its no more a sport than playing pool, or darts.

That's only your perception, but whether you like it or not, golf is a sport. And who the heck throws like Randy Johnson btw? Maybe 5 other people in the world? No even?
And you're using the word metaphorical in the wrong context.

ultimateknicks - you best be bringin' your best semantics game or be gone.
Sebby, you ever play golf?
ANd under pressure?
Under pressure against competition? No its not a contact sport but that little ball is a bitch to hit.
golf is not a "sport" but its a "game". Same with Curling, badmitan and chess. Chess is a game of the the mind while golf requires a skill set and mental capicity fused together.
Tiger does some amazing stuff. IN fact he top 50 players are amazing.
Sebby, don't get all badass on the game until you have played it.

how so?
A metaphor is a comparison without using the words "like" or "as." I wasn't making a comparison of any kind.

LoL. No its not. Well, not just that. Looks like somebody tried to be a smart ass and just went to webster's dictionary and called it a day.
There are mixed, complex, extended, uncommon, conceptual, cognitive metaphors...ext.
Point being is that you cannot compete with oneself the way you do with another physical entity. And what you said is not even true when it comes to golf, because you are competing with other golfers. So "competing with oneself" or whatever becomes a metaphorical or conceptual interpretation of actual "competition". An idea.

I agree with everything you said. Pretty much what I said earlier. I didnt shyt on golf, so I dont get why you think I'm being antagonistic or whatnot and saying I'm acting like a bad ass.
I cant call it a sport when there are so many rules that ensure the comfort of the performer. Caddy's. Silence, ext...
I have played golf. I enjoy it, and I'm actually pretty decent. My dad is a major golf fan.

Not so much sebstar. I've been a poet since the 7th grade so I know my stuff. Not saying I'm a good poet. Just saying I know the components, and obviously metaphors are some of them, and that's what they are. A comparison, nothing more or less. I wasn't making a comparison. NOT an idea, as you mentioned. I was literally saying that a sport is that. Whether you refuse to believe it, is your own thing, but that's what it is.
And you absolutely can and do compete with yourself. You probably do it all the time for the record. It's called trying to improve from your previous self. And in golf, you CAN compete with yourself. People golf by themselves all the time, trying to do better then how they did before, or trying to break their own expectations.
Now if you wanna come up with research that proves golf isn't a sport, by all means. You probably will either find something unreliable or weak though. Golf IS a physical activity, for the record.
i say we settle this on the golf course UK style. 1st annual UK San Diego Open anyone?

by girls you mean fish and dj right?
This could incent me to really work on my game. How about doing this at Libery National? Site of the Barclays and where Tiger (I got inside information on this) was rejected by one of the hired "receptionists" working the tourney. Apparently, she was invited to a "big party" on his boat after the final round. His boat was parked @ the Port Liberte docks (I live there) and she showed up to find she was the only "guest." She bolted. Looks like Tiger's game didn't work on everyone.
I would definitely do a golf get together over the Summer or something, but you have to give me a couple or few months so I can work on my game!
sounds like a plan allanfan (see im a poet too homie
)
so, who on this site is a golfer? So far, we have the following:
Allanfan (NY)
Jusnice (NY)
Jimimou (NY)
If we can get a group together, i'll take the lead in coordinating - and if it's big enough, i'll find us a way to get some charity credit for it. It's a win win, we play and we get to have some of the proceeds go to those less fortunate.......SO, WHO ELSE IS IN???
If this gains some steam, maybe we'll start a new thread...
I'm so in. Watch out as I bring my amatuer game to the links!

Bro. Stop. Please stop.
The metaphor you're referring to, a stricter literary kind, is NOT the only metaphor in existence. There is alot of depth to the use of a metaphor.
Have you ever heard of conceptual metaphors?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conceptual_...
Yes, I am aware that one can compete against oneself, but is an abstract concept. Its not tangible. Oh and btw, yes you were making a comparison. You were substituting competition with oneself with actual physical competition. In essence you were saying that golf ranked with other sports because when golfers compete with themselves, it favors comparably with other sports where there is a natural form of physical competition.
Actual competition, not theoretical.
i golf, but i got a mean slice on my drives. ill fly right out to the diego for that though.
