Great win, screw FIFA refs

Can anyone explain to me how this format works? So the US has now advanced to the next stage, does their record in this round carry over, or is it a brand new slate?

nyk4ever @ 6/23/2010 12:01 PM
we are fucking in boys. i can't believe that goal, i just can't believe it. it's the last day of school here where i'm at so I setup a flat-screen in the cafeteria so the kids who are here can watch. when we scored that goal.. holy crap, the sound in that cafeteria was incredibly loud. amazing. absolutely amazing.

Top 2 in each pool advance, 16 teams in all. Single elimination.

Go Germany, win your pool!

loweyecue @ 6/23/2010 12:11 PM
Damn dudes, I think I had stopped breathing for a few, still hyperventilating a bit here! That first Algerian shot that went off the cross-piece threw a real scare. But what a relief!!

England played pretty well too, much more like England should have played the first two games.

LOL.. ghana or serbia sounds like a nice draw for us. germany better look like they did first game when they put on that scoring-barrage.

Yeah but wouldnt it be awesome if Germany didnt get through. That would just make my day. Sory Dodger

watched the match in a small local coffee shop with a tv in the prospect heights section of brooklyn. we had maybe 8 people, with 6 americans sitting and watching...we were all so into it and tense...

when the goal scored we just burst out!!!

amazing...never experienced something like that for the u.s. team...

was with an american co-worker who never really watched soccer before and said, "now i see how soccer can be so good."

just a spectacular way to finish, even if we should have had that goal earlier...

Lol... No sweat Fly!!! ;-)
Its gonna be a fun game against Ghana... hope we go through and play the way they did in their first match!!! Now I also hope we dont get to many yellow cards!!! If we do, the BAD BAD refereeing from the Serbia game will really mess up the next game!!!
Hey fly how about just kicking penalties?!? ;-b

I swear if it cones to that 20 million englishman will just commit suicide rather than watchthe inevitable. Having said that, podolski?!?! Maybe the Jerries aren't as immune to penalties as they used to be.

wow, unbelievable win by Team US this morning... can't wait to watch the replay
PresIke @ 6/23/2010 4:17 PM
is ghana "tanking" so they can play the u.s.?
bitty41 @ 6/23/2010 5:25 PM
From what I watched Ghana played with absolutely no sense of urgency and never really ran any good sets in the penalty area. I think the match btw them and US could go either way. However I think England is going home after next game Germany will have one of their best players back.

And those black German uniforms are kinda of fly

PresIke @ 6/23/2010 5:49 PM
btw...

i kept espn on after 'world cup live' to hear a the guys from 'around the horn" keep the level of discourse and understanding of soccer/football amongst the 'diehard' sports fans in the u.s. who watch it as low as possible...

one dude said the u.s. is a quarter-final expected team, and acted mad with the result...he claimed we are a top 8 team...

lol...

what???

not one of them seemed to have the knowledge to chime in and correct the man...

they also said that argentina looked like a weak team...at times.

so did the lakers. god they are such drama queens on talk radio type of programming. i've heard oodles of silly comments on 1050 espn radio too.

it's like hearing mike francessa...who admits to not watching the nba...being seen as some kind of "expert."

generally, i don't care too much, but it seems to affect people's perception of the u.s. team, which is not going to win titles at this point...

i guess we can also thank alexi lalas for acting like the u.s. was that much better than everyone except england in group a.

i'm just saying, folks need to temper their expectations of the team.

the goal for the team from my pov was to get to the round of 16.

mission accomplished.

i suspect the u.s. team has impressed some outside observers a little...at least showing that there are some players with some quality who can perform at the highest level.

the team is getting better, yes, and it was great win today...deserved. rarely do most teams blow away their competition in such events. this isn't a 7 game playoff where the better team is likely to win...

anyway...

if we beat ghana...great...but that doesn't mean we're a top 8 team if you make the quarter finals.

in 2002, the u.s., turkey and senegal made it.

none were considered top 8 teams because they made the quarter finals.

firefly @ 6/23/2010 6:27 PM
On that note Prez, a lot of the chatter here in England is that the US have been very impressive. A well-respected guy on the radio said when Donovan scored "if that doesn't make US sports fans appreciate football, nothing will". I think Bob Bradley has done an immense job, and I reckon Michael Bradley will be in the Premier League soon. IMO you guys have done more tonight to raise global opinion of you then you have over the past 10 years.

Oh yeah, and noone takes Lalas seriously outside of the US, so I wouldn't worry too much. He's seen as a buffoon-like homer with no clear objectivity at all.

PresIke @ 6/23/2010 7:04 PM
yeah, firefly...

i think donovan has really sparked interest amongst those curious about what the sport is about...

people were going crazy today...never have i seen that about this sport before...which is great...

and yes, i thought bradley did really well tactically, and with substitutions...

good job of benching gooch, starting edu (who did fine while in), moving bocanegra to center back, and even bornstein's start...actually i was also wondering if beasley would come in due to his pace/speed, and someone at the place i watched was like, "there's time," as if he figured he wanted to bring him on when algeria was dead in the legs...

either way, bradley is a very smart guy (sort of a jeff van gundy type of coach...spends ridiculous hours watching video...perfectionist type), and easily a huge improvement over bruce arena (our old coach)...

a lot wanted klinsmann, but bradley has shown he understands the game, to me. tried to cater to the teams' strengths, which arena did not...again, i like bradley...his demeanor and intelligence...

appreciate the outside observations firefly...not like i was on the pitch ;)...but i had that feeling as well...that as a team, the us team did much better than even that quarterfinal run in 2002...

as for your team...good move by capello to put in defoe....it seemed to me (from the times i was watching...briefly) that england outplayed slovenia, in general, as they should.

shame rooney missed that shot and is hurt...although i'm not sure i wanted to play germany...but ghana the only remaining african nation on african soil is not exactly a good matchup for the u.s. team...

i saw one header by terry that was very nice...and the 3 lions looked more as they should...i plan to check the replay later...

good luck vs. your most "beloved" foe! ;)

PresIke @ 6/23/2010 7:17 PM
to me the thing that will sell this to u.s. fans is that the team played with heart...dude's were bleeding and received hard tackles...but still had a never say die attitude...providing a hollywood storyline for the media in more ways than one...american sports fans eat that ish up...
PresIke @ 6/23/2010 7:24 PM
what was interesting, and i think is a understandable problem for american fans...is the perception of "diving" as being "soft."

the guy i watched with who doesn't follow the sport was watching youtube vids of dives and laughing...

it's true, this happens, but not all players do that...

shoot...nba players do it...

what if someone complied a highlight reel of all of the b.s. charges and whining by players about fouls in the nba?

the point is that perception about diving underlies the notion of soft-i-tude...

aka why "euros" (aka anyone not north american) are going to be "weak" players...

jozy got tackled hard on his heels a few times...and dempsey was bleeding from the face...

part of the issue is that most of us don't play the game at levels where we can understand how physical the game can be...yes, there are divers, but there can also be some really harsh play...

bitty41 @ 6/23/2010 7:27 PM
But don't you guys think the interest in the WC is kinda of like the interest in the Olympics for sports like track/field, swimming, or gymnastics? Americans can catch the WC fever but afterwards the interest will wanes significantly.
