i wasn't making any reference to the elite soccer talent issue... i personally think soccer players are some of the most gifted athletes in any sport... the endurance & will power it takes to run around non stop for 2 stretches of 45 minute halves is mindboggling to me, much less having the concentration & dexterity to dribble a soccer ball with your feet while you're doing it... i'd be winded just running from 1 end of the field to the other.

i think there is also the culture of sport in the usa... my prior post mentioned some of what i have seen in terms of folks reaction to soccer.

there is more to it then marketing in my view. i think folks find other sports more interesting, and there is a log jam with the 3 now, and that doesnt include nascar/golf and college fball/bball. where is the monetary interest gonna come from unless more folks demand it, and that hasnt happened. it may change if folks can get into it more. thats the easy question, no idea how it can be done.

ha, left out nhl cuz it suffers from some of the same "issues" as soccer here. though nhl may have found "saviors" with ovy vs sid vs chi youngens.

i suppose it's the classic "chicken or the egg" debate... on the one hand, soccer will never gain in popularity if it doesn't get more media exposure, but it will never get more media exposure if more people don't demand to see it... in the end your other point is probably the most valid, that most people simply don't give a crap about soccer in this country unless it's during an international event like the World Cup or the Olympics.

theres time though... labor probs, roid scandals, etc can open many doors.

once thing thats gotta stop: flopping. gadzooks. its dreadful. nba fans hate it, its awful in college... why the heck is it allowed to such a degree in sport is ridiculous.

Soccer's just going to take a long time to catch on. It's not an "American past-time" so to speak, so will take many years to truly be a major sport here. If the US team starts going deeper in the world cups and younger generations start growing up with soccer, it will catch on.

Also, I really wish they'd fix the names of the sports here. Football is just a silly name for the sport it represents and soccer should be called football. That would help too.

TMS @ 6/26/2010 8:07 PM
i agree, i think soccer should follow suit with hoops & penalize players for flopping... maybe issue game suspensions for any player to be caught doing it during the course of a game by the sanctioning body or by the game refs... it's a disgrace.

American girlie Rugby with added protection? Caution: the preceding sentance was a joke. Please do not assume I am denigrating your national oasttime, just cuz y'all ain't man enough to play it without 25lb of cushions strapped to your body. Damn i did it again!

Americans do play rugby btw... the fans just don't buy into it like they do with the cushions.

Silverfuel @ 6/26/2010 11:44 PM
That really sucked. They had chances but the ball just did not go in.

Its really interesting TMS as Basketball has/had much the same problem in Germany for years now.
Even despite having a huge star player like Nowitzki in the NBA ppl followed the NBA on TV but didnt really start to play organized ball... there has been an German league in place for years but outside of some specific places (where the sport is locally popular) the generall public had NO chance to follow the league on TV for years... the games where not even shown!!! How can that promot a sport in a country where soccer is played by almost every youngster who begins sports!?! Of course following a national league on TV and see that its a quality sport does motivate ppl to go out and play.
Another point is that it is even more difficult as there are only few Germans playing in the league. Most of the good players there are second fiddle americans like Casey Jacobsen or Dan Dickau.
On a side note... my soccer club... FC Bayern Munich has decided to push its basketball department (yes they do have a basketball department) into the first league so I am really looking forward to watch some good live basketball in Munich soon!!! Love it and will follow how this does influence the sports on a regional level!

england looking poor
PresIke @ 6/27/2010 10:38 AM
england robbed of a goal!
PresIke @ 6/27/2010 10:41 AM
okay, if no video technology at least have a linesperson at each goal line. i mean, c'mon.
PresIke @ 6/27/2010 10:42 AM
as for soccer in the u.s...

it has been growing, quite clearly since 1994.

this past year was the first season espn broadcast english premier league and spanish la liga games, where you see higher quality play than the mls.

it hasn't been something that has a history here so it naturally takes a while, also given the other sports that dominate here, to grow.

the u.s. team's quality is higher than ever and that is definitely a testament to the growth of the sport.

yesterday in a concrete area i used to play stick ball, after the u.s. match, i saw a bunch of teenagers playing soccer.

never in my entire life have i seen that happen in that space.

KnicksSince88 @ 6/27/2010 10:54 AM
That was freakin ridiculous. England got robbed. Its tough to take this. Goals in soccer are so rare and it seems half the time they are being disallowed or not even counted for no reason between the US games i watched and now this one. Its getting absurd. Absolutely absurd. Totally takes away a lot of the enjoyment im getting from watching the games

Funny you mention that. When that 7'1" German kid got picked in round 2 this past Thursday, and they were showing his highlights after the pick, it looked like he was playing his games in my elementary school gym. I thought at that time, "Man, basketball must not be that popular in germany"
