So if by illogical, you mean spot on, then yes my comment was illogical.

this move wasnt the problem. All those things you listed would have happened without the Melo trade, except we would have been the 3rd or 4th youngest team in the league with a roster deep with size and athleticism and max cap space to add another star, etc
The Amare signing was solid. What picks did that cost us? Jordan Hill? That wasnt the piece to put us with the elite. What killed us losing Gallo (22), Felton (26), AR (21), Mosgov (24), 2014 first rounder, 2016 swap w/ Denver for one player we had the cap space to sign anyway. Unless the Knick Melo ups his game to Michael Jordan status then yea... we are looking at a lot of years of first round and dones.

You make a good point here actually. The only thing is if you start with a young draft player first then he can develop a little maybe until you make your first and second big free agent signing. After the second big signing you're ready to make some big waves in the finals. But yea, you're right also.

Yes we gave up a lot but what choice did we have? There is no way we were going to be competitive with the Heat unless we got a guy like Melo. The job isn't done yet, we have an off season and a draft to try and get more pieces.
Are we in a bind because of the cap? Yes. Did we give up too many picks? Probably, but we really only lost Felton and Gallo as far as players go. Moz wasn't that good (and I like him) and Chandler was gone in FA. AR was a non event and don't even get me started on McCurry.
We have yet to make a follow up move, start judging when that happens. Until then don't be so down - we weren't going to compete with the Heat, Bulls, Dallas or OKC.

The reason why many of us are down is not because we are not able to compete with the top teams now, but rather because we will not be able to compete with the top tier teams for about 8 or 9 years. That is the truth. Why, because we are royally screwed cap wise. We need 3 scoring options and a decent bench to even be able to think about competing with a top tier team like the Heat. If we had kept Gallo out of this trade then we could have kept him as our third scoring option. Eventually the Knicks could have re-signed Gallo without it counting against their cap. This would have allowed them to kept a decent number of respectable bench players and 3 scoring options. Now there is no room to do that. Perhaps the worst part of this last trade is the fact that many fans don't truly realized just how screwed up the Knicks are right now unless the Knicks team management changes course. But they soon will know as the next 8 years develops into failed hopes and dreams.
That is why many of us are so down right now.
I'm not ready to start weeping about the falling skies just yet. As everyone here knows, I was against the trade as constructed because it gutted our roster. But what's done is done. There is a path forward that depends only partly on draft luck. We are not privy to everything Donnie Walnuts knows or plans, but let's wait and see how the draft goes next month and then give our guys a chance to train together before we abandon ship yet again.
I'm still excited by the prospects for this team. For one thing this is the NBA, you don't really need a lot to improve dramatically. It starts with Donnie and the draft. It's possible he could look to buy a pick and this draft is actually full of guys at about the same talent level. It's not top heavy, but it's deep with quality players. We have a great chance to come out of this draft with a good player.
Then we have the FA market. Sure we don't have a ton of cash and we don't know what the new CBA is gonna be, but i'm sure that there will still be a means for teams to improve. Either there will be a hard cap but with a higher Cap number or the same kind of situation we have now. This team will have a chance to improve. The FA market is so big that we'll be able to get one of the many role players for sure. All we need is role players now and that's what will be available in this FA class. The bigs we have now are so bad that it won't take much to improve on what we have. All the guys we have are under 7'. Hopefully we can add 1 or 2 7'ers.
If Donnie is successful this team can compete with the other top teams in the East.

It's almost summer in NJ, we'll be talking Vegas summer league before you know it, and Melo will come to camp cut and ready to run any flotsam and jetsom pretenders off the roster and out of the league. Walsh will work some sort of magic with a defensive big that also manages to keep Pringles happy, we steal some quality PG from some loser franchise (hello Brooklynettes, I'm talking to you), and all of sudden, the skies are blue and orange again.

you made the counter point though.. you going to tell me Melo+Amare is going to compete w/ Bosh/Wade/LBJ? Its not even close. Rose/Knoa/Boozer/Deng is light years past us also.
Melo is a great player, but he's not THAT great. Getting him is fine. Making that trade ensured we will spend the next 4-5 years trying to find that next player that will elevate us to elite and never have the assets to aquire him. I would love to wrong... this is just my observation. Doesnt mean I wont root for the improbable (Knicks beating elite teams in playoffs) but I DO ackowledge that it IS improbable

It was this move, the first move after the stupid summer of Lebron, that brought us down the road we are currently on now. We are capped out and this team is not going to get any better for a long time.
The good news is we are a good 3 years in to our decade of suck. So we have a good 7 years left until we will be rebuilt and back in contention. Yes, only 7 years to go!
