Knicks · Ewing Jr Waived, Congrats to Shawne Williams (page 2)

I cant believe some of you dont mind a guy that makes Lance Stephenson look like Grant Hill.

I thought "we" only wanted high character guys on the team?

AnubisADL - apparently Donnie Walnuts doesn't mind either.

"We?" Speak for yourself. "We" want the best basketball players.

Roster spots are not reserved for sentimental reasons so don't get your feelings hurt. It's strictly business.

I prefer Shawne Williams because of his superior talent level. Many here didnt want to take a chance on guys like Derrick Caracter, Willie Green, or Lance Stephenson because they were "low character" guys.

We don't need anyone with immense talent and off court issues. Williams should be better than he is. HE is a player you cut. Ewing was happy with his role, which was no role. He practiced hard and he played hard when he got out there. You need guys like that to balance out the team.

We talkin bout practice

MS - how many Knicks practices did you attend?

How can you confirm that Shawne Williams was not kicking more booty than Ewing in practice?

The open practice at The Garden does not count.

As usual you are right on earl.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Troubled former Indiana Pacers forward Shawne Williams has been arrested after police found marijuana and a loaded gun in the car he was driving.

-That was in July

-- Indiana suspended him three games after he was arrested when police found marijuana in the SUV he was driving.
-- He left early from a Pacers game when a murder suspect in Tennessee was arrested shortly after leaving Williams' suburban Indianapolis home.
-- Police arrested a passenger in Williams' car for marijuana possession, a move that led the Pacers to trade Williams to Dallas.
-- He appeared in just 15 games over two seasons and was told essentially to stay away from the Mavericks because of behavioral issues.
-- The Mavericks traded Williams to New Jersey in January, but he was quickly waived after coach Kiki Vandeweghe said he was "way out of shape."
-- Hours later, Williams was indicted in Memphis on eight counts of possession and conspiracy to sell a codeine-based syrup.

You want a kid like this on the knicks be my guest. If you can be paid millions that you don't deserve and you can't stay in shape, act professional and not let people down, be my guest.

But for a player that isn't going to contribute we don't need issues from a last roster spot. The Knicks are a joke franchise because of players like this. Turning around years of damage takes time and you don't do it with players like this.

Troublemakers

On October 18, 2008 at 1:00 a.m., Joba Chamberlain was arrested in Nebraska for suspicion of driving under the influence, speeding and having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle. A Nebraska State Patrol spokesperson said Chamberlain was stopped for speeding on U.S. 77 near his hometown of Lincoln. His arraignment was postponed four times: in December 2008, January 2009, and twice in March 2009, all by Chamberlain's request. He pleaded guilty to drunken driving and was sentenced to probation on April 1, 2009.

MS - are you really certain that Donnie Walnuts simply gave Shawne Willaims a jersey without considering the probability of bad behavior?

You think he talked to the kid one on one?

Jeter, Mo, Andy P, Posada, I can keep going. Stable influences, 27 World Championships a professional organization. One infraction vs. a laundry list. But, good try though.

One of the worst run organizations in Sport. Finaly buidling a team with character guys. If this was the Spurs, Lakers a team that wins fine, but it's the knicks. An organization that hasn't won anything in nearly 40 years.

Congrats to Shawne Williams and every other person who made the most of a second chance.

Ruined potential good karma for a guy who is practically worthless.

Well, they're both sorta "worthless", from an NBA perspective anyway. Bummer for PEjr, but he will have to work on his game if he wants to play at this level.

Patrick Ewing and Patrick Ewing Jr are two different people

Patrick Ewing is better than Shawne Williams

Patrick Ewing Jr is not

Totally agree, Earl. Besides, most likely Williams and or Jr. will be wearing Armani's behind the bench anyway. This move has zero impact on the core rotation.

Armani--what a waste--Gentleman's Warehouse 3 suits 400$:)

There's something sweet about the cut and the cloth in an Armani suit. It's a great feeling to wear one and not something reproduced by the rags from GW.

PEJ had a guaranteed contract.

I wouldnt be surprised if they told him to hold on a little while if/when a Melo deal goes down.

I honestly don't think it really mattered. Williams probably had to outplay Ewing Jr by a lot in order for the Knicks to choose HIM, a guy with a bad history, over Ewing, a sentimental figure/symbol. Either way, I don't think either player would have had a shot at making the rotation at any point this or next season. In fact, if it weren't for the Knicks, neither one probably wouldn't have made any team.

Karma and business don't mix. We're trying to build a team here. If Williams f's up and messes up the locker room, we can easily cut him and just get PEJ back anyway. It's not a big deal.

this tells you about the gap of talent between NBA and NBDL where PEJ put up bigtime numbers

i would definitely hope they bring PEJ back if or when a Melo deal ever takes place & guys like Wilson, AR or Gallo are involved in the deal.

For Shawne Williams to bump a recognizable name with a guaranteed contract indicates that:

A. Williams' skill set is clearly superior to Junior

B. Williams has decided to take his basketball talents to Midtown Manhattan instead of loading the dishwashing machine at Rendezvous in Memphis

C. whatever pictures Junior has on Donnie Walsh are not that juicy

"I'm not going to lie," Williams said. "I really thought it was a long shot. I knew I had to work. They told me it was going to be between me and him, and I had an opportunity. And once they told me I had an opportunity, I took it for what it was and just tried to go show them everything I can do with the limited minutes I played."

"I was so young when I first came into the league," he said of his legal problems. "Over years, you grow up, you develop a lot of common sense and you figure a lot of things out. So that's what happened. It was a letdown for my family," he said. "It was a letdown for me, too. But it takes a toll on your family when they expect something from you and you just disappear from the circuit for a while."

Williams' weight ballooned to 265 pounds and he admitted to "getting depressed sometimes."

To get back in shape, Williams spent part of the summer training at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla... "He is a true student of the game and will be a great complement at the stretch 4," said IMG Academy coach Dan Barto. "His shot-hunting abilities are unique, and he should surprise many of those NBA personnel that wrote him off. He dedicated himself this summer to a rigorous regiment and has answered all the challenges thus far."

Despite his legal troubles this summer, Williams said his epiphany came when he was at home in Memphis and decided he belonged in the NBA.

"One day, I just woke up and me and my agent had a talk, and I just felt like this is what i wanted to do for the rest of my life," he said. "So I've got to do everything possible to make sure that happens."

"My journey's just beginning. This is just the beginning of it and I've just got to keep working hard, and whenever coach calls me, I've got to be ready."

"He can play three or four," D'Antoni said. "He shoots the basketball extremely well. He was our best shooter in preseason and he makes shots. He's got himself in shape. He was the 17th pick and he's got plenty of time."

Can you post the source?

D'Antoni kills me when he says stuff like that. All D'Antoni cares about is shooting.

That would be a great feel good article if his last arrest wasn't exactly 3 months ago and if he hadn't been arrested twice in the last 10 months. I don't think posting that a player got a dwi is the same as the stuff this guy has been involved in. I also agree with Annubis that this is an odd signing as players with talent and potential have been passed over, bought out or traded because of character and maturity issues. Here is the rest of his criminal history prior to getting arrested with a gun and marijuana in his car this past July.

Indeed, the rap sheet for Williams is long:

CrushALot - do you think Donnie Walsh would ever institute a zero-tolerance policy?

Here's a question for you Answer Man. Who said this?

"If he can keep it together, he's good enough to play in the league. There's no question about that."
