Knicks · The Premature, But Still Official, Landry Fields Appreciation Thread (page 6)

It is amazing that Fields is outproducing all rookies other than the #1 picks from the past two years and we got this guy in the second round. The Knicks scouting department has really redeemed itself from the Jennings fiasco.

Yeah, I don't mean to slam Fields AT ALL by saying he's not Clyde Drexler. He's just nothing remotely like Clyde Drexler as a basketball player.
He's a very very very good and smart player though. He hustles and runs and that's exactly what we need.

I will say, the way he got those plays wasn't special, but they were BIG. That 3 was clutch as hell, the scrappiness of grabbing that loose ball at the exact right moment, which fittingly enough, he was there b/c he was hustling (But unsuccessfully) from going after the rebound just before, and then hustling to the basket just in case the layup didn't go in. He should have gotton the MSG player of the game over Douglas, even though the scoring stats read different.
I would have given it to Felton though. He played his heart out. Still shows some bad shot selection though, but he's playing much better.

You serious man? Landry Fields is not a lottery pick. You should try watching other teams rookies.

expand on that. What are those lottery picks doing to help their team win? Cause we all know there is straight up concrete chatter that Landry is doing exactly that for the Knicks.

Fields is indeed playing like a lotto pick. He's smart and not doing too much. That's why I love that kid. He's fitting in and could actually do more but realizes that he doesn't have to force anything. With really good players around him, he can do the little things that put us over the top. He's a D'Antoni player. Mike has always had guys like Raja Bell, Hill, etc. that are smart and know what do at the right time. Guys that have complete BB skills.
He will have ups and downs but this kid is no joke. He can really play.

The only rookies getting 20+ minutes a game are John Wall, Eric Bledsoe, Evan Turner, Wesley Johnson, Landry Fields, DeMarcus Cousins, and Derrick Favors. Hard to put up stats sitting on the bench.
Those other guys are expected to carry a large load for their teams to be successful. We have Amare, Felton, Gallo, and Chandler carrying the load here.

"Will Landry Fields ever come back to earth? I don't think so -- he's the real deal. In Tuesday's 110-107 win over the Bobcats, Fields came up big, scoring 14 points (seven straight during a key stretch) and hauling in seven boards. After the game, Mike D'Antoni said, "We were kind of dead in the water and he found a way to restart the engine ... Big hoops in big moments. The guy's pretty good." Yep, "Agua" can ball"
8 "Turner had a rookie moment Tuesday night. With the Sixers clinging to a three-point lead over the Wizards (and No. 1 pick John Wall, no less), Turner went to the line with a chance to ice the game. The No. 2 pick missed both free throws and Wall capitalized, drawing a foul on the other end on a 3-pointer and hitting all three to send the game into OT. "I don't ever, ever do that," Turner said after the game. "I don't know how that happened." Gilbert Arenas, of course, had his own explanation. "I told him two plays before that when I fouled him the first time and I said, 'We're going to foul you because you're a rookie. Rookies always miss." (Well, Wall didn't.)

There's something to be said for a player that plays meaningful minutes on a team with good players. Fields is playing so well that he's fitting in perfectly. There's no reason to limit his minutes cuz he's performing at a high level. Fields IMO is a late bloomer and those guys get overlooked a lot. 4 yr guys get labled and he really is a much better talent than given credit for. In what area is he lacking really? Athletic, smart, fast, skilled...

i think you answered the question for my favor. those other lottery picked rookies are not getting playing time or are in the D-League.
It's always nice for the Knicks to outsmart everyone on Draft Night, because it has rarely happened. ESPN's Chad Ford discusses how he and just about everyone else incorrectly dissed the Landry Fields pick. After the jump:On draft night, the Knicks caught me by surprise when they took Stanford forward Landry Fields with the 39th pick in the draft. Fields was in our database ranked as the 116th-best player in the draft. He's the first American player ever to be drafted that wasn't in our Top 100 since we started doing this in 2003.
Clearly, I blew it.
Fields has earned a starting position for the Knicks and through three games is posting a very impressive 19.30 PER -- better than both Blake Griffin and Cousins.
How did I (and a number of NBA teams) miss so badly? Our Top 100 is based on the consensus of a number NBA scouts and executives. Fields wasn't mentioned by any of them. He was so off the radar that he wasn't one of the top 60 players invited by the NBA to participate in the Chicago predraft camp. The NBA selects participants based off of rankings by all 30 NBA teams.
But that's not an excuse. One NBA scout, along with a source close to the Stanford team, called me and told me I was sleeping on Fields. I pulled down some tape from Synergy and frankly, just didn't see it. Had I thought about him specifically for Mike D'Antoni's wide-open system -- maybe. But the truth is I thought he was a good European prospect, not an NBA one.
He's proven me and the rest of the league very wrong in the early going. From all accounts he's a very nice kid who's working really hard. Here's hoping he keeps it up over the course of his career.
Give the coaching staff credit for putting him in the perfect role, and best believe field is not going to hit any rookie wall, cause we won't have to play him a whole bunh of minutes. He's not a go to player, so his developement will come at an even pace, as oppose to up and down ( 3 good games 5 bad games) erratic play.

Why are they not getting minutes? Most have veterans playing ahead of them.
6 - Ekpe Udo - INJURED
7 - Greg Monroe - Playing behind Maxiel and Villanueva
8 - Al-Farouq Aminu - Playing Behind Gomes and Butler
9 - Gordon Hayward - Playing behind vets like Bell, Kirilenko, and Miles
10 - Paul George - Playing behind Granger, Rush, Dunleavy, and Posey
11 - Cole Aldrich - D-League
12 - Xavier Henry - Playing behind Mayo and Sam Young
13 - Ed Davis - Recovering from injury in D-League
14 - Patrick Patterson - Has the guy Scola ahead of him along with Hill.
15 - Larry Sanders - Playing behind Gooden and Moute
16 - Luke Babbit - Playing behind Matthews, Fernandez, and Batum
I'd also like to add the guys playing ahead them are better or provide defense/scoring that is lacking in the lineup.
If Azuibuke was healthy would Fields have gotten those minutes? Probably not. Luckily for Fields he was competing with Bill Walker and Mason for the SG spot.

No matter how you frame it tho, if you can play and show yourself to be more productive than the guy ahead of you, you'll play. Walker and Mason got beat out by Fields and Mike liked what Fields gave us enough to push Chan to the 6th man role, now that's saying something.

You just answered you own question, bill and mason are not rookies, and he out played them into a starting spot.
Most of those players you mention are on non contending teams, remeber last year people was smashing MDA for playing veterens ahead of the rookies despite us being a non centending team. Now that you look around the league and see that it's the norm, you want to make a case as to why these player's arent recieving the PT they deserve, how about they just aren't that good, or just not ready.
Fields earns every minute he's on the floor, you can't tell me he hasn't earn that starting role, cause I know for sure MDA is not going to let no rookie get him fired, he would have been yanked him in a heart beat.

Beating out Walker and Mason does not make you a lottery pick.
Jefferies is getting ZERO burn in Houston. There was little reason for Hill not to get play over Jefferies last year. Jefferies is TERRIBLE.
Fields will never be a star (my opinion) because he doesnt have a great first step, isnt an above the rim athlete and cant create his own shot. He can however be a very good rotation player for 10 years in this year and part of an elite team. Fields is the kind of role player that helps you win titles. Tell me you couldnt envision him winning a title with the Spurs, Lakers or Celtics?
It makes you nuts when these teams get guys like Fields with last first rounders or 2nd rounders. While other teams are throwing shit on the wall hoping it sticks and they get the next diamond in the rough (who will probably take 4 years to develop) the SMART team draft guys who can just play. Sure they may not be stars, but they can PLAY. Fields is one of those guys, and he's making Walsh and the Knicks look really smart.
Thrilled to have him.
