Knicks · What Is Donnie Walsh Thinking Right About Now? (page 3)

"Even if Isiah Thomas is advising James Dolan and Donnie Walsh is furious, this is still the right deal. Isiah and Dolan are doing the right thing,...I'm actually glad Dolan is listening to Isiah. This time around they're right."

- Ian O'Connor, Sunday February 20, ESPN-1050 show.

"But consider, just consider, this: The Knicks weren't winning a title any time soon -- make that ever -- with the team they would have fielded sans Carmelo. And they may not win one even now; the Nuggets couldn't throw in any guarantees. But they're in position to go for it now."

"Forget everything else and focus on that. They're closer this morning than they were yesterday. They had to get this done. And they did."

- Mike Vaccaro, NYPost, February 20

"Knicks fans have bought into the Walsh-D’Antoni line that “we can’t get Carmelo because we don’t want to lose our core; we can’t mortgage our future for one player.”

What core? What future? Who is there not to give up? Stoudemire is the only Knick who is not expendable. Danilo Gallinari? Wilson Chandler? Fine players, those two, but they are not approaching All-Star status and perhaps never will. They are complementary players, and complementary players, while essential to a team’s success, come a dime a dozen.

Players like Anthony do not.

Look around the N.B.A. Every outstanding team has at least two great players and the subsequent luxury of being able to add complementary pieces each season. If the Knicks put Anthony alongside Stoudemire, they too could be in a position to begin adding complementary pieces — and maybe another star. The Knicks could finally have a three-headed monster. But first they need Anthony. How do you not make this move if you are the Knicks? How do you not demand this move if you are a Knicks fan?"

- William Rhoden, NYT February 20

Oh man so outed---these men should put down the pen and move on. They have lost all credibility

misterearl, I know we are in agreement so this is not directed at you. But to put Melo (and even Amare) into the realm of 'great' players is not fair to them, and is not accurate. The only great players are those that play both ends of the floor. We have two good offensive players who are not meshing well together(and to assume that they will is a big assumption), and who never shown a history to defend.

People who say let's fire the coach are misdirecting their anger at the wrong person. You want a team that plays defense? Get players who defend. Right now the only player we have that defends is Toney Douglas. Before we had 3 starters - Chandler, Felton, Gallo all could either stay in front of their man, block, or do both.

Average at best. But they were all young and had tons of room to grown. I would have like to see a half season's worth of games with Moz in the lineup with full confidence, not that Moz from the beginning of the year.

Nice to see more balanced scoring but...you gotta get stops.

This appears to be building towards a Spring collapse of historic proportions. We're talking 1964 Philadelphia Phillies blowing a sure pennant. We're talking New York Mets blowing a seven game lead in two weeks. We're talking the crash of the Hindenburg.

Is Walsh still contemplating his contract extension, or is he done with the frustration of having his work overwritten with spray paint?

He could easily retire and put his feet up some place comfortable.

Oh the humanity!

You forgot the NY Yankees epic 4 game collapse against the Red Sox, sending Boston to its first chip in 86 years. Now THAT was ugly. This is an adjustment period, for sure. But I had no plan for us dominating in the playoffs this season. Let's at least be realistic. These guys need a camp and season to blend their talents. Maybe MDA goes, too, but Walsh needs to be retained and finish this project.

"I knew it would be a rough adjustment, but dang, I thought Melo and Stat would mesh better than this. That a-hole Jim shoulda let me roll the dice and try to squeeze Melo into a FA signing. Hell, if that greedy bum went to the Nyets, I could have signed us a backup PG and a stud center this summer and we'd be headed to the ECF next year WITHOUT Melo. But I am going to stick with this plan. Two starphucks down... one more to go. I'll do my best to convince Howard to make a new home in the Garden when he becomes a FA. If he balks (probably will) I'll try to complete the wedding toast trade. If that doesn't work, I'll tell Jimmy D. to fix this shyte himself."

Five things

"Jamie Skeen is pretty good"

"my kingdom for a floor leader"

"Let's see ... Billy Donovan or Shaka Smart?"

"Gotta remind Allan that seven foot VCU freshman DJ Haley is worth keeping an eye on"

"Call the Allied Van Lines dude"

What He Said

"We're on the way now, yeah. We've got a core group that can be the makings of a very good team,"

What He Really Meant

"We were on the way before, yeah. We just swapped four for two."

What He Said

"I don't think it's there now, but we're getting close. That's what I said I'd do in three years. That's what I've done."

What He Really Meant

"My work here is done."

well... It's 8:30 in NY. So, he's probably responding to his mail on his Remington. Lunch is served prompty at noon. Tea at 12:20-30. He then sends his mail out via carrier pigeon. Midday, he puts the milk bottles out. Dinner is promptly served at six. The financial news comes on PBS at 7:00, which is the best financial news on either channel 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 21, or 23. He'll watch the first 15 to 30 minutes and then nap. Pretend to listen to his wife after he wakes for an hour or two, then goes to bed. Pisses four to nine times. Then starts his day at 4:30-5:15, whenever the internal clock tells him to wake up to get that worm.

Dude, I don't care what Donnie Walsh is doing. I could care less. The bedtime routine was TMI.(and funny)

What is he THINKING?

I don't quite get what you are saying here. In order to have even a 'good' defense it is absolutely necessary to have someone in the paint to alter shots and protect the rim. We are closer now that the Mayor and Gallo and Moz are gone? Gimme a break.

Road Signs

"Playoffs - when you're trying to build a team - playoffs is the best way to find out where are we," Walsh said. "Because then, what you don't have will show up."

"Walsh wants reassurance that he will have full autonomy on basketball decisions — a promise Dolan made when he hired him three years ago. Although Walsh has generally called the shots, there have been notable exceptions. Last summer, Dolan tried to hire Isiah Thomas, the former team president, as a consultant, over Walsh’s strenuous objections. The N.B.A. later disallowed the arrangement because Thomas is also a college coach, at Florida International University.

In February, Dolan pushed through the Carmelo Anthony trade, despite reservations from Walsh, who felt the Knicks were giving up too much. Walsh had taken a conservative approach to the negotiations, believing that Anthony’s strong desire to play for the Knicks would work in their favor. Walsh is also perturbed that a number of people, both inside and outside the Garden, are advising Dolan on basketball decisions, undermining Walsh’s authority.

As several people with ties to the team explained it, the critical issue is whether Dolan wants the 70-year-old Walsh back badly enough to make those concessions. Money is not an issue, nor is Walsh’s health or his enthusiasm for the job.

“I think Donnie will try to make it work,” one friend of Walsh’s said. “I assume they’ll come to some understanding.”

Most of the front office is also in limbo, with the contracts of several scouts and team officials set to expire June 30. The list includes John Gabriel, the director of pro scouting and free agency; Misho Ostarcevic, the director of player personnel; Mark Warkentien, the director of pro player personnel; Rodney Heard, the director of East Coast scouting; and Mark Hughes, the director of West Coast scouting.

Ahh, a nice clean cupboard for Isiah to fill.

Donnie is thinking he needs:

1. no more "Jimmy got moves" and give the store away

2 Create a "No Isiah" zone.

Those two conditions has to be met or he should walk.

3. A bigger office in the MSG renovation plans

4. Josh McRoberts cell number

5. Eliminate the stupid catwalks

That is misdirected anger my friend. The real issue is Dolan. Not Walsh. And Not D'Antoni.

Can you see Donnie on the "Cat walk, on the Catwalk" witn no shirt and his walker singing: "Im too sexy for my shirt too sexy"?

NO, me neither.

The catwalk looks stupid. Site line on upper deck looks crowded.

Be good place for knick fans to jump off of.
