Obviously he doesn't have the same sort of game or pedigree and perhaps potential, but dude is still the hottest rookie in the gaaaaAAAAMmmme.

Factorials

Landry Fields Dad, Steve, once busted Allan Houston's Dad, Wade, in a game of horse, blindfolded... Lefthanded.

Modell's stock was up 817% after the video posted on YouTube.

When he was in the sixth grade Landry Fields gave acting lessons to Tom Hanks.

Landry Fields stopped shooting so Carmelo could touch the ball... and that was only AFTER Carmelo begged Landry to date LaLa's younger sister MiMi as compensation.

The Japanese government has pleaded with Landry to solve the nuclear reactor crisis. Fields promised to get back to them after the playoffs.

John Havlicek has requested an autograph from Landry Fields via Pope Benedict XVI.

Fields acts like a coaches kid.

Man Houston was a good player... not a star, but a damn good player. Too bad so many people remember the contract over the other stuff.

Bottom line is the Knicks NEED Fields to be a bigtime player, but he's got some things that I think will keep him from ever being anything close to Houston. Slow first step and slow release on that jumper. He has a very hard time keeping people he defends in front of him... time will tell. Hard not to root for him. Downside is he's a productive bench player, which is great in the 2nd round. Upside? I see him as a Matt Barnes.. maybe a Rick Fox? Kind of oversized SG

landry will have a loooong way to go to match the type of offensive player houston was. not many had/have a jump shot as lethal as houston's - when he was on, we called him aqua or H 2 0 - the guy was water. landry may already be better on the defensive side as that wasnt houston's fortee.

Love Landry, but dudes overrated defensively.

Honestly, he may have the physical tools (as did Houston at 6-6' 220) but he's not stopping anyone. Not at this stage anyhow... Houston played nearly 12 minutes less per game his rookie year, behind Lindsey Hunter who was stealing all the PT.

how is he over-rated? Or rather, who is rating and touting him as a defensive dude?

He's a second round rookie who leads the NBA guards in rebounds per minute.

GustavBahler @ 4/6/2011 6:51 PM
Fields needs to work on his jumper if he wants to take it to the next level. Slow release, bad form, and not much elevation. Landry seems like the kind of guy who will always want to improve his game. Proof of that can be seen in his taking it to the rim more often now and his attempt to develop his midrange game. Fields does other things very well like rebound, and has a great nose for the ball. Its the only aspect of his game that concerns me. I believe his defense will improve in time.

I've seen comments by several people (not just on this site) claiming that he's good defender. It simply isn't the case in my view and I'm not pointing fingers. He rebounds well, sure. But without a center and Amare being an inconsistant rebounder, do you think Landrys numbers are padded to some degree?

Bill Walker has superior range and the ability to finish; imho he still has the higher ceiling.

both fox and barnes have hot looking wives or exes..fox was married to former miss america vanessa williams and barnes's gf is a hottie latino on nba wives..barnes would be a good pickup next year as a defensive stalwart for 2m a year..plus his gf can keep lala company

On that last 3 by Iggy tonite Fields was following the ball, not the man, and got crossed over. Nothing he can't fix with some proper defensive coaching...from someone.

Mray20 @ 4/6/2011 10:05 PM
Allan Houston was not starting he was backing up Joe Dumars so it's not a fair comparison .
Knixkik @ 4/6/2011 11:35 PM
There is no reason to think Fields doesn't have similar upside. He may not be the lethal scorer that Houston is, but at the end of the day he is still a 50% shooter and 40% 3-point shooter. If those numbers can be improved or maintained as he earns a greater role in the offense, we are in excellent shape with him as our starter SG long-term. Many people believe he lacks the tremendous upside, but i think we need to be happy to where he is at in this stage of his career and can only assume he will find ways to get better. I still compare him to the SG version of David Lee in the way that he has a high BBall IQ to improve and maximize his physical tools into a very good player despite the perceived lack of potential.

With better defense, hops, rebounding(for his position) and last but not least, better sense of humor.

It wasn't just the contract, its how he played in 1999 for the contract and how it completely changed after that! A lot of people hated the way he stopped defending after 1999, his contract year. I saw you call out Carmelo playing defense only when he wants to but I never saw you call out Allan Houston. Dude just stopped defending after 1999. Thats what got him booed at the open practice. But he could shoot and no one can argue that.

Landry fields can be a better all around player but I doubt he will be as effective offensively as Houston.

I don't see the H20 upside at all. I think the D. Lee comparison is spot on. he's got to develop his handle and become more of a slasher. Also, if hes gonna be a 2, he needs to learn to post guys up, he has a size advantage.

orangeblobman @ 4/7/2011 7:56 AM
Fields has potential, I see him growing a lot, because he went to Stanford, so he's very intelligent.

I think what you see from him is a strong upside, and not a big downside. What I like is that he's efficient. If he can drop the trey bucket like Houston, at some point, which he can, I think, then he will be deadly.

So he needs to post up and he needs to drain treys, he has everything else covered.

He's so impressive because he's solid all around, he covers all the bases, he is decent at everything and very good at other things.

misterearl @ 4/7/2011 8:17 AM
Who is Landy?
TheGame @ 4/7/2011 10:00 AM
He needs to develop a mid-range/post game, improve his shooting overall, and work on his defense too. He does not really have a pull-up jumper off the dribble. He needs to work on that too. Basically, he is solid at everything, but also needs to get better at everything if he is going to continue to be the starting SG.

H20 had an amazingly quick release, a ferocious first step, and was nearly impossible to cover. He could get his own shot and make even great defenders look helpless. But he didn't play an ounce of defense and was a liability on that side of the court.

Fields is nowhere near Houston's level yet, but there's a lot to like in his game. He's well-rounded, and with dudes like Melo and Stat on the team, I'd prefer that complimentary role for Fields than a pure shooting guy like Houston.

There's something to be said for this. I think Fields makes the team better with a rarely mentioned intangible: His awesome personality and Stanford-trained intellect. He's a smart, jovial, fun-loving guy who elevates the "atmosphere" around him with cleverness and humor and makes dudes psyched to have him around. In a FUBAR organization like the NYK, that's a wonderful quality to bring to bear. It helps alleviate the tension of playing for a moron like Dolan.

H20? A total dud, zero personality, nothing jovial about him. Now I definitely loved watching Houston shoot. He was one of my favorite pure shooters in the game. And I'll always feel a special fondness for that shot against Miami that clinched for us. But he didn't offer much else to elevate his team.
