What makes us a contending team next year? What realistic moves can be made to put all hands on deck and make a run at this thing? I feel that if we get the right players to surround our stars with, we can do it. Realistic big man targets like Dalembert, Foster, or even Chuck Hayes who is significantly undersized but a great team defender and great passing big man would be a huge upgrade at center. Even a guy like Kwame Brown, who isn't what he was supposed to be, but still a true center who is a good post defender, and still young enough to improve a little. Also, guys like Grant Hill and Anthony Parker significantly improve our wing positions because they are both strong two-way players who can score when needed, but also move the ball well and defend the ball well. And we can look at trading for someone like OJ Mayo as well. So what can we do assuming we have a MLE to use this summer but no addition cap space? I really feel like we can make a run at this with the right additions and a full season of chemistry.
I think the Knicks have to maintian flexibility for the Paul/Howard/Williams summer. That could be capspace or:
(1) load up on one year rentals
(2) sign young, talented players to Raymond Felton type contracts
I would target:
(1) Shane Battier, Grant Hill, Michael Redd, Aaron Gray, Jason Richardson, Carl Landry, Andrei Kirilenko, Nazr Mohamed, David West, Caron Butler
(2) Shannon Brown, Aaron Brooks, Nick Young
I'd also look into trading for James Harden... but I hgihly doubt there would be a fit. But who knows
The Key is finding a real C that can actually play starter minutes. We can't expect to really improve if we end up with another guy that can't play at least 30 mins a night. It would also be nice to have another PG option that can pass and penetrate effectively. It seems like we're gonna end up playing slower out of necessity, which isn't a bad thing if we can add a couple of smart halfcourt players. There will be a ton of role players available this summer.
You think Kenyon Martin will accept a one year Full MLE contract?
sign Anthony Parket with the LLE
Draft Faried.
Martin/turiaf/Jerome Jordan
Amare/Faried
Melo/Shawne Williams/Derrick Brown
Anthony Parker/Landry Fields/ Rautins or walker
Billups/Douglas/Carter
I really like this line up going to next season. Though we are undersized e will be tough. Martin prides himself defensively and teams wont double team STAT and MELO because he can finish. We actually get bigger with Jerome Jordan. Our bench gets deeper with fields being our 6th man. We get a true shooting guard who can spread the floor for Melo and STAT plus plays decent defense with Anthony Parker.
After the playoffs it was clear that we needed a shooting guard and an enforcer on defense badly, and we got those 2.

I think Nazr would be a great pickup on the cheap, as in lle. Redd is an interesting pickup for the vet minimum. Jason Richardson would be great for the full MLE but I bet he is worth more. There are bargains out there. I think a dollar general type of off season of Nazr, Foster, Parker, maybe Redd would be nice. Nick Young is definately intriguing. He is kinda like JR Smith without the knuckleheadedness. I would settle for Richardson and Nazr though..

I like your Martin, Parker & Faried trio but my preference would be these 3.
Chuch Hayes (1 year full MLE)
Marco Bellinelli (LLE)
Faried
Billups
Fields
Melo
Amare
Hayes
Douglas
Bellinelli
Purple
Faried
Turiaf/J. Jordan
Knicks cannot contend unless a commitment to defense is brought every single night.

This is where adding a center that can rebound and defend is going to help. If we don't improve that position it's going to be hard to improve defensively. We know that CB isn't getting any faster. STAT and Melo will most likely defend a bit better, but can we guarantee that they'll turn into KG and Lebron on D? I hope so, but it doesn't seem realistic to expect that.
Donnie is going to have to try and find FA's that are known to be great defenders. I believe that is what he's going to look to do. He always had tough defensive teams in Indiana and I believe he knows that he needs to find guys like that now.
We a need a facilitor who can stay healthy.
Andre Miller is looking good right about now.
Basically, we need to find this year's Landry Fields in the draft and then pick up a serviceable center to provide rebounding and interior defense. If we can do that, I think this team can contend (assuming Fields, Douglas, and Williams also improve their games over the summer).
there can't be a strategy until the new CBA comes out. until all the parameters are worked out, its all sheerly speculation.

I dont think you can get Bellineli for the LLE that guy had a career year no way he will settle for the LLE
I like chuck hayes, but he such a liability on offense that makes the person guard him sag off and double melo and amare

I like both of the ideas. Adding 3 quality role players is key. Anthony Parker is a great SG option, seems to fit well. Adding a strong defensive big man who can stay healthy is most important, and it seems as if there are some good options. Hayes, Martin, and Kwame Brown all fit the bill. They all have their weaknesses, but they do what we need well. For rookies, Faried makes a ton of sense and can definitely contribute off the bench, as does Markeiff Morris if he is still available. PGs like Jackson and Darius Morris also make sense if we go that route.
I doubt Faried will be available where we are at this point. Key to improving this team right now is to get really lucky and smart with the draft and D-League pickups.
do you think raytins can develop hi point guard skills?
If not id buy a low pick and draft Darius Morris..guy is a pure point guard with great size excellent complement to douglas.
kwame brown has hands of stone
Hayes despite being the best post defender...is too small he is barely 6'6 and is a complete liability on offense
Martin on the other hand is a good defender, has toughness in him, is a GREAT finisher and knows MELO AND Chauncey
if we draft Faried he will make Hayes and Brown useless because d antoni wont play too many players who suck on offense.
my point being Martin>> Hayes and Kwame
I'd prefer Hayes over Martin... primarily because Martin would be more expensive, and he'd also probably be injured for most of his time here

I definitely agree with you about Kenyon Martin. I think he is one of our best and most realistic options because he is friends with Melo, Billups, and Amare. Although he is undersized for the center, i think there are only a few players in the entire league who can guard the position as well and compliment Amare on offense as effectively. Hopefully he would accept a one-year deal for most or all of the MLE with the understanding that we are keeping our options open for Paul and will bring him back the following season with whatever we can afford to. He should be eager to make a run before his career is over and this should be a good situation for him.
C Martin
PF Stoudemire
SF Anthony
SG Fields
PG Billups
6th Douglas
7th Turiaf
8th 1st Round Pick
9th S Williams
10th J Jordan
We will still have to address the bench, possibly by finding the right SG and moving Fields to 6th man, but this roster as is becoming a significant improvement going into next season, and i think we can be comfortable knowing that Martin improves the entire defense by a lot.
If the CBA remains the same Id sign Anthony Parker for the LLE
i dunno who is a better option though.. For the LLE
we desperately need a true shooting guard who can spread the floor for Melo and AMARE and i beleive Parker is that guy.He is a a career 40 percent 3 point shooter. And plays Good defense. That what seperates him from Michael Redd, who on the other hand is the more popular guy and a better shooter but is coming of a serious knee injury. His defense would suck and he might be AZU part 2
Anthony Parker for me is the most realistic option for the SG position. Good shooter, Good defender, is a veteran who knows his role. And a good locker room presence. Knicks will get a hell of a steal if we can snatch him. He might come for the LLE because he knows we are on the rise and he has a few years left why not make another run at the championship.
KMart? That might actually be good. Then I really could walk away from this team
