Knicks · Marc Gasol Not A New York Kind Of Center (page 1)

lol

From Chris Mannix SI.com....Twitter

Been told the Knicks aren't overly interested in Marc Gasol. Not the type of center they're looking for. Dalembert, Chandler more their type.

Chandler more than likely gets re-upped by Cuban. So now we're going to be in a bidding war with Sacto over Dalembert and we only have the MLE/City and possibly our 2 stars to market him

AnubisADL @ 5/24/2011 11:49 AM
We werent getting Marc Gasol anyway. We can only hope the Clippers are really cheap and willing to trade up Deandre Jordan.

I know but maybe we shouldn't be including him in the "he's not our kind of center" but more so "he may be to difficult too acquire after the season he's had".

Our type of center is any type of center we can acquire. Knicks have no chance at Gasol so he isn't our type.

LOL. yeah, beggers can't be choosers. That said, I would like an athletic center and we can't forget Jerome Jordon coming over next year. He isn't the most athletic, but he's good enough. I'm not sure he isn't as good as anyone we would select at 17 (ok, he isn't the rebounder that Ferried is, but on offense, he is good inside and with Melo and Stat drawing attention, I think he would suffice.) When pick 17 rolls around (outside of Ferried for his rebounding) we have to think of Jordon. If a center available is not clearly better than him (after his one year overseas), then we go different position.

LOL exactly. this is like a single guy smiling at a hot brunette and getting turned down and then remarking "blondes are my type."

It will be interesting to see who exactly is a Knicks center this year and what that title actually turns out to mean.

Jerome Jordan.

Timo was a good example of the kind of physical and raw skill level we'd be looking for. You want a kid with good size, good hands, agility and quickness, a decent jumper out to midrange. The player doesn't have to be great, but if he at least has NBA skills in terms of D, rebounding and can roll to the basket after setting a pick and finish, he'll be a good fit. Basically you want a BIGGER Turiaf! High energy guy that loves cleaning the glass and dunking on people. A kid like Jeremy Tyler might just be a good pick up if we can grab another pick.

I worry about a 'potential' big on this team at this point. He might be a great pick for some teams but the track record with 'potential' guys here is not the greatest. If the Knicks management had a plan for him and the coaching staff stuck to it it might work. There are some great role model vets on the team but I don't think with all of the turnover that there is much of a structure yet.

Perhaps the team should back off on any player with potential, just in case.

What cap money would they use to have interest in Gasol with?

This is why I advocated dumping Billups and using that cap money to chase Gasol.

Ah well.

You said it not me. I do think there was a reason that guys with 4 years of college were selected last year.

The cap room will always be an issue no matter what Big Name Free Agent big we go after

Knixkik @ 5/24/2011 10:04 PM
Dumping Billups and signing Gasol or another center of that caliber was a possibility, but it would have left us a major hole at PG. We are better off keeping Billups and signing a center as there are better options then next summer presents. Next summer gives us a strong PG class, however, even if we don't have max cap space, including Felton and Sessions.

Ah well.

2 problems: 1) Gasol a restricted free agent, so Memphis can match whatever. 2) You buy out Billups and Knicks have something like < $6M in cap space, no starting PG, no shot at Gasol, and no MLE (if it exists).

They'd have more like $9-11M in cap room - assuming they couldn't create more by moving Turiaf or Balkman for $3M and a second round pick. And they only have a starting PG when Billups is healthy.

Please explain how you come to that less than $6M number, because it's patently absurd.

Not to mention the Memphis owner said they wouldn't match on Gasol if he "wanted to leave."

Yeah thats 4 problems right there. I think what we did will be fine. But we do need a center and should try and get the best one we can afford. No more minimum salary centers to fill in. These playoffs show you can compete if you have the star power and the quality and depth of big men. Contrary to the Heat winning again, we have enough star power to compete if we have the right supporting cast. It starts with an above average center.
