Knicks · Sources: Dwight Howard Working On Extension (page 1)
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Magic center Dwight Howard spent the holiday weekend working on signing a two-year extension with the team, sources told Local 6 Sports Director David Pingalore late Monday.Sources said the deal is all but signed by Howard.
On Monday, Howard held an impromptu Memorial Day party for his Twitter followers and fans.
"I just got tired of everybody asking me, 'Where am I going to go? Are you going to stay?' Everybody in Orlando is asking me," Howard said. "So it was like, 'You know what? I want everybody to get their minds off something that is not gonna happen.'"
If Howard were to sign the extension, he would remain in an Orlando Magic uniform for four more seasons.

He still could be traded. However I am happy for him if he resign with Orlando. I think Stan the man will be gone before Howard.
He'll be scrambling towards the end of his career, trying to limp up and down the court as a sixth wheel with another team.
Sad, really. Money and Ego. Two terrible things to base a career on.

pretty much my thought when I read the clip

That, or he's loyal to the team that has paid him beaucoup bucks, and his teammates. What's wrong with that?

I'm sure he's made more money for them than they've paid him. If anything, they've been unloyal to him by putting garbage rosters together during his prime years.

The one thing I always thought some of the top players in the league could do to help their team was to structure their contracts in such a way that the team keeps growing its cap while said player moved his contract #s downward in an effort to sign, trade or whatever for a better player (who invariable demands more than just MLE, etc).
Have players done that? Perhaps Tim Duncan.
The league is going to move to make it harder to create a super team and Orlando is a pretty good gig.
"Winning" is nice but these guys talk it up more then they really care.
I don't blame them for taking a pay cut when there is no sure thing they will make it all the way.
What is on his landscape anyway? WHat team has the depth and cap space to accomodate him after next season? Knicks don't.
LA don't.
He can get Fran Vasquez to commit, and perhaps Arenas retains his former ability with some maturity.
Its doable in Orlando to be a top 4 east conf. team.

Not necessarily true. Dirk could have left Dallas on a few occasions and now he's playing for a chip again because he stayed the course. It's taken 13yrs of loyalty, heart ache, and pain mixed with some joys for Dirk to get back to the mountaintop. Sometimes this is the best route to go. It depends who's running the team and their vision/goals. Orlando can rebuild/retool in 2yrs, in the meantime they'll have to move some pieces.

Dirk did make it to the finals once before, which Dwight hasn't done, and in a much harder conference. That said, I wouldn't have advised Dirk to stay in Dallas. I'd advise a superstar to team up with at least one more star and join a team with cap room and at least one excellent player on a rookie contract. Or if you don't team up with another star but join a team with several strong players on rookie contracts, that's preferable to. Dirk might be working on his third championship right now if he'd done that. Same with KG. The biggest difference between Dirk and Larry Bird is Kevin Mchale and Robert Parish.

You're wrong again D-12 got to the Finals with Orlando against the Lakers faster than Dirk...... so maybe in 5yrs or less like Dirk he can get back there again while remaining in contention
Many fans feel Dirk was robbed in 06" BTW with all the D-Wade ref treatment. Not sure I get your point exactly. There is no real concrete evidence of stars teaming up with each other and it equaling ultimate success. Even if Lebron and the crew win it's not evidence of something that will last. Dallas was very close to being a Dynasty for over a decade and had Dirk won at least 1 chip and competed for another until now you could argue they were.

I forgot Dwight made it through the weak east once. 99% of the championships are stars joining together. Star combos usually don't happen via free agency because stars just go where the money is and the cap prevents multiple stars from joining a team with a strong foundation. It's not because the path wouldn't work. The fact that nearly all championships are won by teams with multiple stars makes it hard to see why it wouldn't work. I don't get your point anyway. Is it that Dwight's better off signing an extension with Orlando if he wants a ring than teaming up with stars? If so, that's laughable.

D-12 doesn't have to team up with any stars as he's already proven he can get there without any around him. It's a matter if they have the resources to build around him going forward. He could leave or collude with other players
Kobe could have left the Lakers and signed in Phx or Chicago as the Lakers weren't going to win a chip unless a trade like with Memphis took place but we saw what happened when he decided to stay.
All I'm saying it depends on team and/or mgmt group running the show

He could make it through the east when the east was weak by himself. Big deal. So did allen iverson and few think of him as a champion. LA has good management and it was worth staying for Kobe. In several seasons, Jameer Nelson is probably the best teammate Orlando management has ever gotten Dwight Howard. If that's not a huge indictment, I don't know what is.

I think it's good that the current salary structure makes it difficult for stars to collude and join together. A good league is a balanced league with many good teams. A league that makes it easy to concentrate a stars into a few teams is not healthy.
The league as is it is today rewards teams that build through the draft primarily and home growing talent (even Miami would not have gotten Lebron if it wasn't able to draft Wade first). To me, this is the best way to form emotional bonds to a team - watching players you draft grow and develop.
OKC is a perfect model (the owner moving the team from Seattle with the leagues assistance notwithstanding)
