I hate to say it but with Melo and Amare and Chris Paul or who ever will never beat LeBron Wade and Bosh and Co. I really didn't realize how good Wade really was until the playoffs. LeBron and Wade are true superstars. Hey I love the Knicks but Melo and Amare are not in thier class. Now Chris Paul could be the x factor. As much as I dislike D'Antoni's style of basket ball but it may be the only way to beat the heat is to have your starting line up being all gunners, sharp shooters and play a little defense. We could out shoot them. Maybe.Hey I am a Knicks die hard fan but look at this Miami team. What do you think. Hey Martin please fix my topic. Thanks

GustavBahler @ 6/7/2011 10:45 AM
If the Knicks want to get by the Heat, defense is going to have to play a big part and it doesn't on this squad right now. I also believe we are going to need a coach who is much better at making adjustments on the fly. Its possible to be the Heat.

If we got Paul we would have one of the best distributors in the league and two of the top 5 scorers. That leaves the supporting cast and a commitment to defense. It can be done, it depends in part who Dolan picks and the ability of the new GM to make the right choices and to sell them to Dolan. Part of it probably deals with playing to Dolan's ego. I'm sure that was part of Isiah's bag of tricks.

The NBA is about matchups.

You look to add Deron Williams over Chris Paul. You draft a gritty defensive big man and you fill in from there. Douglas, Fields, Williams is a nice core of good role players. Jerome Jordan's development is big.

Historically Carmelo has always been a handful from Lebron. He isn't a great defender but he's also a player that isn't going to be locked down by great defense.

Amare is the the second best foward power forward in the league behind Dirk and can take over games at will. Bosh can do no such thing.

If our role players improve and Deron Williams decides it's time for America to know who he is he is going to come to New York.

The Russian will never let Deron Williams go. Anyway he will be in Brooklyn that's part of New York isn't it?

Hate to say this but once the Nets start playing in Brooklyn, I'm not sure how long I'll stay a Knick fan. I love the uniform, and the history, Jeff Van Gundy, Mason, Ewing, and the rest... but the owner is just too much to stomach for me. Prokhorov seems like a good owner to get behind... a Mark Cuban type but lower profile.

Tyson Chandler and a good defensive supporting cast aren't able to stop Lebron/Wade
Joakim Noah + Luol Deng--same story
Kevin Garnett and his hall-of-fame supporting cast--same story

And we are miles behind these three teams defensively.

I have to tell you, I have not watched all of the games closely, but I want to say that both CHI and Dallas just need/needed another guy to step up in the scoring department. Their defenses seem to be adequate enough.

Nalod @ 6/7/2011 12:39 PM
Funny, you guys are all going to one side of the boat:

Stop Lebron, Bosh and Wade?

No doubt great atheletes can play great defense when they need to.

Why stop them? Make them stop you!

Chicago had best record, best defensive team and could not stop them.

Phuch it, take it right to them and make them stop you.

Miami's great "Defense" is played in the last 5 minutes. Keep the game close and then your "Stars" have to play both ways.

We did this to some extent with Boston in the first two games. No, we are not there yet, but you saw somthing.

Bulls at games end were limited offensively and could not shoot. They were tentative and delusional.

The blueprint is about balance. No doubt we need to sure up our defense but lets not go overboard by having a nucleus of an offensive team and then "Call for MDA" to leave cuz we watched a few games on TV and see defense is the way to go.

AMare when he has to played some good defense in Boston, so did Melo.

Priority no. 1 is a big to make Amare's life easier.

Beat Miami? Not this week!

Its been Dirk's lack of help offensively that's hurt the Mavs more than anything. They've been in these games right to the end.
As for the Bulls, they rely too much on Rose and he got shut down when it mattered. The Celtics are old and it showed.

I agree we're a long way from being a good defensive squad and will continue to be as long as D'Antoni is here. If he brought in a defensive minded coach that could help but it still would be tough. We need to clean house.

No, really I didn't! I'm sure I've done it in the past though, unconsciously. You read a lot of posts then you type something and discover later that you got it from another poster. But I do try to give credit where credit is due.

That's not just some random occurrence, though. The Heat are an outstanding defensive team.
nixluva @ 6/7/2011 2:34 PM
We could never be as good defensively as the Heat unless we got rid of STAT and Melo, but then we wouldn't be as good offensively. You can't look at it like that. The Mavs are a good defensive team. Not as good as the Heat, but good enough. Their problem is that after Dirk none of the other players is a superior offensive player. When Dirk goes to the bench you see the drop off immediately. On the Knicks we have 2 top tier offensive players and when CB was healthy he was a very good 3rd option. Now if we can add another potent guard to the team this year that will only make this team more dangerous offensively. If we can also boost our interior with a big rebounder then I think we're in the conversation.

This is why we had to load up with 2 Studs in their prime. We can actually match the Heat in that regard. The only thing we have to do now is keep building the team around those guys and fill in the holes on the roster. The Knicks are the one true threat to the Heat at this point, cuz if we're successful in drafting this year and can make a good FA move or 2, we become a serious competitor for the Heat. We'd be the one team in the East with as much firepower as they have. Also STAT and Melo aren't intimidated by Lebron and Wade. Don't underestimate that.

GoNyGoNyGo @ 6/7/2011 2:35 PM
Disagree. Wade is the leader and will be 30 in January. As his body breaks down, more burden will fall to LJ and Bosh. To me, neither has yet to prove they can take over that role. I know, I know, LJ led Cleveland to the finals, I get it. That being said, he still makes you think that he may choke.

NY needs the 3rd scoring guy that will make Defenses really struggle against them and it will put them over the top. Melo and Stat just need to preach team D as it will be the needed factor in winning a ring but it is not THE factor for them.

TymeLessKnicks @ 6/7/2011 3:03 PM
Papabear, how many of these "will never beat Miami" threads have you made? LOL
holfresh @ 6/7/2011 3:43 PM

I think the complete opposite...I think a team that executes on the offensive end can beat the Heat..They are not a good half court team and depends too much on turnovers and the transition...But a year from now is a long way away with so many moving parts on both teams...It's way to early to assess the Knicks chances against the Heat at this time...I think a lot of the Knicks success will depend on how Melo and STAT complements each others game...CP3 taking on Kobe in the plyoff showed me he can put a team over the top who have two stars like the Knicks in place...But it's way too far to make any assessment about how these teams can match up...

I have a nephew that lives in Miami that has been texting me non stop all playoffs...I mean 24/7...I can't wait until next year...I jus wish we had the point guard in place that we will use going forward..Should be fun tho...

You are wrong. Hey I would love nothing more than to beat the heat. I am a Knicks die hard fan but it is what it is. The heat have 2 Superstars that are better than ours so we will need a 3rd star better than theirs plus some great fillers who can defend. Now if you think that I am wrong show me!! And stop talking about my threads. I see that I get plenty of comments. Are you jealous??

It truly irks me to see such posts. Why not become a Net fan now and avoid the rush. Back to the point at hand; The key piece in this matchup is not CP3. A defensive center swings the momentum back in our favor. I think that Dalambert or Amar'e nuetralizes Bosh, Melo matchs up well with Lebron and a good defensive guard keeps Wade from exploding. A little forsight goes a long way.

Mavs have missed their share of open looks, especially Barrea. The Heat's defense is a factor but like I said, these games have come down to the few last seconds, so both sides are playing their share of D.
