Report: Rockets C Yao Ming retires from NBA

The news that no one wanted to hear is here: Houston Rockets center Yao Ming has decided to call it a career in the NBA.

The decision comes after years of dealing with nagging injuries.

Back in December, Yao suffered a stress fracture of his ankle that required season-ending surgery and threatened to end his career. It was assumed at the time that the injury could be career-threatening, as the injury occurred just five games into the 2010-2011 season. Yao had missed the entire 2009-2010 season due to injury.

In March, Yao told reporters in Houston that he would attempt a comeback but was cautious in his outlook.

The 2010-2011 season was the last year on Yao's contract, making him a free agent.

Yao, 30, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 NBA Draft. Due to his overwhelming popularity, he was voted to the NBA All-Star team in each of his eight seasons as a pro.

He leaves the game with career averages of 19.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.

Wow. Tough breaks forced him to make an important and smart decision. Bummer for his family and for Rockets fans.

Is Eddy Curry paying attention on how to go out with dignity?

He should continue rehabbing. He is only 30 years old. A year from now, he might feel better and can make a comeback. The Knicks should definitely make contact with him and let him know we are open to giving him a chance if he decides to comeback to the NBA in a year or two.

I agree. I also was hoping the Knicks might make contact with Chuck Hayes but my guess is that the Rockets resign him as soon as the lockout is over.

Great idea, Game. It's a no-brainer, if he's still got a hunger for the game.

Wow such a brief career. Wish his body had held up longer.

Big basketball player... bigger man.

The Chinese Jackie Robinson. Total class act.

He deserved one chance to be on the big stage- playing in the Finals.

I think he gets into the Hall. I don't know about as a player, but definitely as a contributor (Chinese fanbase)
