Knicks · What's wrong with 50%? (page 4)

nixluva @ 10/6/2011 3:48 PM
The one thing that some of you seem to keep forgetting is that the talents of the players are rare and guys with money aren't. The owners can be replaced. The NBA wasn't the 1st pro BB League and it needn't be the last. The players were the attraction before there was an NBA. Even right now fans are paying to watch the players perform outside of NBA games.

IMO the players have repeatedly been more than cooperative in helping the owners to make money and all the owners keep doing is make poor business decisions and come back asking the players for more.

MS @ 10/6/2011 3:48 PM
The average salary in the NBA is $5MM a year. If you evaluate what each player is really worth in this league a good 85% are overpaid. These assholes live in fantasy land and the sense of entitlement is just troubling.
Situations where players sabotage the entire season because they aren’t happy with there situation are far too common. These guys think they deserve respect and they then show up looking like a bunch of hipsters at a bar in Brooklyn. Melo and Baron Davis was that a joke. Is Baron Davis really showing up at negotiations? A guy that quits on every team he has ever been on? The guy sign a contract double his real value and then comes into camp overweight every season.
Marquee players and superstars should get paid, the rest of the guys should be lucky to make what they are making. Most of the teams are losing money in this league. Some of the blame has to fall on bad management, but if a team doesn’t get a Durant, Duncan, Lebron chances are they are going to have to overpay to get free agents like the Knicks did with Melo and Amare, the magic did with Rashard Lewis just to appease their fan base or keep a disgruntled star happy. Just a nice refresher: Curry, Marbury, Francis, Taylor, Rose, Crawford (9MM plus), Eisley, Anderson, Weatherspoon, Jefferies, James (5MM+) and just about every other player on the Knick roster in the past 10 years has been overpaid, doesn’t sell tickets and gave up on the season.
Split the thing down the middle and start the season. It’s not the fans fault that a large majority of the league isn’t educated enough to save their money. How many guys need to piss away there contracts on cars, houses and jewelry before they look in the mirror and say, I’m actually better off then 98% of the country, it’s a privilege to do what I do and I better get my act together before I have to join the Globetrotters.

Talent is irrelevant as time will phase this set of talent out. Some new talent is always available to take the place of old.

nixluva @ 10/6/2011 5:13 PM
Doesn't matter if it's the current talent or new guys like Iman!!! What the hell is wrong with you guys??? The PLAYERS are the game and always were the game even before the NBA existed. You think the NBA invented this? The modern exciting style of play started in the gyms & parks and grew popular, then guys with money saw this talent and decided to make money presenting it in a better way. That's fine as both parties benefit from this as do the fans. I just resent the idea that the owners are not somehow responsible for mismanaging their own money. Are they all mismanaging their franchises, NO! Is every team doing things in the most efficient manner in order to make sure they make a profit? NO! The only ones that have actually moved to give aid to the owners self made financial problems is the players. This will be the 3rd CBA in a row where the players made financial concessions!!! When do we realize that the problem may not be the players, but the owners who can't seem to turn a profit no matter what system they're given. I remind everyone that the league had a BANNER year with high revenues.

I keep hearing that and honestly, it doesn't seem to fly anymore.. what bad decisions are these owners making.. and don't point out one or two, I am talking about the majority.. Honestly, the worst decision they have made over the years was agreeing to any CBA in which these clown players get 57% of bri.... It seems most of the so called bad decisions made by owners are all tied to paying the players... and if they don't pay them, then they still have to cut a check to maker sure that ridiculous BRI % is met.... LOL... just ridiculous...

Great post.. I agree 100% except for spliting it down the middle...

Dude, nobody is saying the "Problem" is with the players.

The problem is with business.

Is it the owners fault? Maybe.

Who fixes it?

The owners.

+1

Or end up in China with Marbles.

As if the 'Trotters would want or put up with half the happy baggage crap most of these players would drag with them.

Based on what evidence? If an owner doesn't think that a player will bring in more than $5 mil in revenues, he won't give the player a $5 mil contract.

And your statement is based on what logic? Owners really think an individual player's contract and revenues are a one-to-one relationship?

If that was the case Special Nate would be worth at least $10,000,000 a year! That clown ass act if done right could have been a good circus act.

Why give a player a contract that you know is going to lose money for you? I can't see how anyone with a human brain would do that.

Unfortunately for Nate, Ringling Bros doesn't pay as freely (and stupidly) as Cablevision does.

Players should draw the line at 52%. The owners are being greedy and have not given the player a single thing the players were not already entitled to in the old agreement. It is now time to play chicken and I don't think the owners are going to waste the season over $150 million.

Last offer from the players was 52.4-47.6 split! That's a fair offer IMO. The players have as usual been the ones getting less and less of the income. This has been a steady drop in % for the players for years now. That's fine, but it's close enough now that the 2 sides should be able to make this happen. 50/50 is good IMO if it's a real 50/50 split and not a lower amount for the players after the owners make some deductions.

That 50/50 split becomes 53/47 owners after expenses are taken into accounts. Every % point turns into a 200 million dollar give back over the life of the deal. At 52.4, that's a bit over a billion dollars. The owners are also going for a 10 year deal, knowing that they get a new TV deal in 5 years. Something smells with these deals. Next stop - decertification.

This is the truth about the owners. They know that things are going to get better in the NBA and in truth last year was the beginning of the bounce back as they had record revenues. This talk about losses is a smoke screen cuz the owners know that the next TV deal is likely to be a whopper. So they're trying to improve their % of what is already going to be a bigger pie full of profits going forward.

The Nets will be in a great spot when they get to Brooklyn. At some point they'll find a buyer for the Hornets and that situation will get better. New York is going to be a playoff team which can't hurt profits. I know that we help fill up the Hawks arena when the Knicks come to Atlanta and now that's gonna happen just about everywhere the Knicks play now that they have Melo!!! All of this new viewership is going to help the league with a New TV deal. There was a small dip during the height of the recession, but since then the league has begun to bounce back and the Owners know it. This is a money grab in anticipation of future profits.

Amazing. In one thread, the owners are stupid malcontents who couldn't manage a Dairy Queen properly, and the next minute, they're brilliant forecasting moneysnatchers who can foretell the future better than God. And soon, the NBA is going to be the new premier TV sport, supplanting the NFL!

Yeah, and I remember how when Melo's Nuggets used to visit any town, ratings and attendance just went through the roof!
