Hornets Approach Paul Situation With 'Eyes Wide Open'
Dec 05, 2011 11:49 AM EST

The Hornets know that it will be difficult to keep Chris Paul in New Orleans, writes David Aldridge, who spoke with a member of their front office. Aldridge indicates that the team understands that Paul intends to join the Knicks."Another thing also becomes clear when you dial the 504. The Hornets are going into this with eyes wide open," writes Aldridge. "They know that Paul spent much of the summer in New York at lockout meetings -- and also with Knicks star Carmelo Anthony. They know that even if he can't get as big a salary from the Knicks as with other teams, it's likely his representatives have all manner of endorsements at the ready in New York that would make up the difference. They believe he'd prefer going to a team where he doesn't have to be 'the man,' and that the Knicks would be just that, with Anthony and All-Star Amar'e Stoudemire willing and able to take the spotlight and the heat that come with it."

The team appreciates Paul's contribution to the Hornets and the New Orleans community over the years and wants to preserve a good relationship with the All-Star point guard if and when he leaves town.Via NBA.com

It all depends on the reality of Paul going free agent and all the implications that go along with it. One of which NOLA gets noting in return, or that Paul asks for a trade with a list of teams he would accept along with his "Melo" type extension.

I posted the very same trade last week. I added Jerome Jordan's rights, 2017 pick and $3mil in cash. If the Hornets don't get any good teams to bite they'll have no choice but to consider what the Knicks have to offer. It's still early tho. IMO the only real serious options are the Lakers, Clippers and Celtics. I would suppose they already know if those teams intend to make an offer for Paul or not. We should know something very soon, since this is going to be a condensed FA market.

i can't see any way the hornets do this trade.

BUT, if there is a trade, i guarantee that iman is included.

it sounds like hes taking the same exact road as Melo. Melo never said in the open he demanded a trade to New York. However, rumors and "sources close with anthony" did say that.
I don't want another year of drama, only 2 ways New Orleans considers a trade to New York. It is the same thing again with Melo and Cp3. Cp3 wants to retain his bird rights and go to New York, I believe its nothing but a bluff just like Anthony...

1)is if Shumpert show's sign's that he can be in the class of Westbrook/Rose/John Wall.
And even then, they will look to rid us of whatever value we can get, with future picks, Fields, any big men with and then cry we lost a lot in Cp3.

2) if we take back Ok4's contract. If we use the MLE one year on someone then trade him b4 the deadline, it can work out. But I am really not sold at Amare and Ok4 being an intimidating combo.

I am really high on Shumpert and wouldn't part with him, I don't think hes the next coming of Channing Frye with KG. He has the tools in the making of being a star
with

Size
Athleticism
Speed
Quickness
Defense
Dribble
Even a nice jump shot form
Work Ethic

He can penetrate and dunk on anyone at PG without help, and post up with his size advantage at PG. With Amare, Melo, drawing double teams if not, they will have a wide open shot.
It would really piss me off if Melo still plays that stagnant 1v1 way, if we get Cp3 too. It would defeat the whole purpose.

Cp3
Melo
Amare

would give us a trip of under average defenders at 3 positions. I can being under average defending team, with teams being stacking up with even more talent in 1-2 years.
We will not be able to defend many teams.

Shumpert
XXXXXX
Melo
Amare
XXXXX

I am looking to fill out the SG and Center with good/great defenders. The SG but be able to defend and hit the 3 point threat.
I can see us being a good defensive team with this. Whats the point of having 2 top 15 players, when they are only known to be offensive players and under average defenders.
Then we have to get a top tier PG to facilitate the offense?

Cp3
XXXXXX
Melo
Amare
Ok4

Ok4 gets decent blocks but he is just too small to play center. With Amare and Ok4, I just can't see that being enough. They are both in the 6'9-6'10 range.

If we signed Melo straight up, then traded our players for Cp3, keeping Mosgov and Wilson Chandler or draft picks. Then we still have the MLE to use.
i would still keep Shumpert in this scenerio

Basically, package, Gallo, Picks, TD, Fields, Felton for Cp3.

And for all those people saying well, Melo would have signed with New Jersey....
SO WHAT! Ill go after Tyson Chandler and still have young talent, picks, and a more balanced team. We can still keep our core and make a trade in the near future with our picks and young talent....

Any trade for Paul is going to mean bye bye Iman and Fields. Come on now.

Please remember the following:

2011 CBA: Taxpaying teams can acquire no more than 125 percent plus $100,000 of the salaries they trade away (same as 2005 CBA). Non-taxpaying teams (based on their post-trade salary level) can acquire up to the lesser of 150 percent plus $100,000, or 100 percent plus $5 million of the salaries they trade away. The cash a team pays or receives in trade is limited to $3 million annually.

Source: http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/CBA-...

With Billups and Turiaf's salary we'd be able to absorb 18.56 Million plus 5 million in salary from the Hornet (assuming we'd be under the lu tax after the trade). That is 23.56 million. New Orleans could throw in Trevor Ariza and/or Jarrett Jack if they wanted too.

Billups 14,200,000
Turiaf 4,360,000

I would not trade Iman for CP3. Iman is going to have to be around as a wing defender, and occasional backup PG. We can;t trade our youths for a guy with questionable knees. ANd I absolutely LOVE CP3. but you have to be smart with what remains of your assets. Does CP3 cover our biggest weaknesses? Does he make us championship level. ON one end yes, on the other no. Will he be able to play out his contract? We already have a question mark in Amare, to trade for another would be irresponsible imo.

Stat, Melo and Iman should be untouchables right now. Everybody else can be traded.

Saying you don't want to trade Iman to get Chris Paul means you dont really want Chris Paul. If New Orleans was willing to accept a package of Billups, Turiaf, Fields, Iman, and picks for Chris Paul and filler Im sure the Knicks would agree to the deal.

NYKBocker wrote:Stat, Melo and Iman should be untouchables right now. Everybody else can be traded.

Knicks don't HAVE to trade Iman and I don't believe they'll offer him. Given that if the Hornets are dealing with NY that would mean they have ZERO other options, then no way I give them everything they want. It wouldn't be necessary. CB, Fields, TD, Jordan, 2017 pick, maybe a 2nd rd'er and $3mil in cash is all i'd give them. If they refuse, we still can pick up CP3 in the off season.

Iman untouchable?

Dude hasnt even played a NBA game yet.

Yeah, but I want some semblance of youth in my roster that has a really good upside. I want to at least pretend that we care about our yoots a little.

If you feel strongly that a player is going to be good then you can surely make him untouchable. 1st rd draft picks often get the benefit of the doubt as to whether they'll live up to the potential they have. Teams make those kinds of determinations all the time. I don't have as many doubts about Iman as some do. It's fairly obvious he has loads of talent. All that remains to be seen is just how good he can be, but I don't doubt that he can play in this league.

If i'm the Knicks I don't send him away, when he can play next to CP3 and provide coverage for him. This kid can make CP3's life easier. Having another guard that has the kind of lateral quickness, length and defensive instincts Iman has would really help CP3.

Completely agree with nykbocker, I would like to have someone who WE drafted and developed and watch them grow. I'm sick of seeing a player that we draft flourish on other teams. (e.g-----Ariza with lakers, frye with phx, nene with nuggets) Give iman a shot. And we would like paul, we DONT NEED PAUL, Felton came cheap and was getting the job done. In 54 games he was averaging 17 and 9

+1

no more damn picks! If Paul is playing hardball then the only thing we do is get him 66 games early and thats not worth gutting whats left of our thin cupboard.

Billups, TD, and Rony with a nice thank you note and a fruit basket.

Its not fair, but its that or nothing.

Shump, Fields and Shawn Williams are not cornerstones but you can't basically play the "big 3" with nothing else and expect much beyond in the playoffs.

Even with the three Amigo's your have size problem and depth issues.

Sounds like nothing is in the works.

I was wondering if the knicks could use thier Amnesty to get a first round pick.

im not hip to all rules in the new cba, but if there was a deal for Paul that could be worked out.......... could the knicks say trade CB for a Gilbert Arneas and some picks, with the sole purpose of using their Amnesty of gilbert and trading those picks for Chris Pauls, with the added bonus from absorbing CPs contract as a team under the cap???

So instead of using CB as a salary holder, you use him to get picks while cutting a player worthy of being cut and getting under the cap.

Some like CB and Balky for Gilbert and a 1st and some 2nd's.
Cut Gilbert
Trade Feilds, Td, Turf and the picks for CP3 and Okafur.
Hornets get like a 20million dollar exception to boot.
Everybodies happy..............mostly.
