Knicks · how about some Toney Douglas love (page 1)

fishmike @ 12/9/2011 10:27 AM
Assuming our new big 3 is Chadler/Amare/Melo our backcourt is going to be Fields and Douglas. Maybe we add some veteran min type like Anthony Carter but dont see Douglas short here.

Dude played with one arm all year and still had big games, played 81 games, played good defense and still got better.

He's > than Ward or Childs ever were.

He gets a lot of hate around here for some reason. Dude's got a great work ethic and I think will impress a lot of people around here

9 games as a starter last year: 14ppg 5.7assists 3rebs and he shot >50% (I know that wont stick)

Also he's got a 2.5:1 assist to TO ratio for his career.

WORST case is he's a below average floor general who can score, create some open looks and really get after opposing PGs on defense.

holfresh @ 12/9/2011 10:31 AM
I want to see this kid do well...Horrible decision maker tho...We need him...I like him off the bench for the spot up three...Im not sure about running the point..
Killa4luv @ 12/9/2011 10:34 AM
I like TD, but he did make alot of bone head decisions. Maybe he has improved tho. Lets not forget we've got to see what Iman can do at the point as well.
Childs2Dudley @ 12/9/2011 10:36 AM
He doesn't play like a point guard.

He is pretty much a shooting guard.

I tell you what... when Phil Jackson becomes the head coach of the Knicks next year, TD will THRIVE in the system ala Derek Fisher. Same role.

that can improve. I think he made some bad plays late in games last year and it left people with a really sour taste in his mouth.

Ron Harper, Derrick Fisher, BJ Armstrong... who am I missing? TD looks like a better player than those guys.

hahaha. this is what i was thinking.

i'm imagining mike d'antoni spent last night looking at the roster and lining up shots of jim beam while chris paul game tape played in the background.

don't forget steve kerr and john paxson.

phil jax never had a very dynamic PG. but he's always had an ELITE shooting guard.

he did have elite SGs, but I think Melo can be that same player but with better POST skills. Kobe and Jordan only developed the post game later in career.

VDesai @ 12/9/2011 11:00 AM
He played very well at PG when Billups was out late in the year, but played very poorly at PG in the playoffs. I'm hoping he got better, but in all honesty I'd rather give the reigns to Shumpert and bring TD off the bench to backup SG and PG.

it's true. the current knicks are a pretty dang good candidate for jackson's triangle. especially the way he ran it with pau gasol and kobe bryant the last three years or so. (with amare as pau and melo as kobe, etc)

Vmart @ 12/9/2011 11:09 AM
I like Douglas but he brought absolutely nothing vs. Rondo got abused badly by Rondo, I think Rondo beat him consistently to get to the rim.
Nalod @ 12/9/2011 11:13 AM

Phil getting some love. If you really look at the Bulls and Lakes they were two stars and role players around them.

They won 3 rings with Rick Fox for goodness sakes!

Phil will wipe the smile off melos face and make him a man!

I am a strong advocate for MDA and want to see him run this team but only a starphuch like Phil can change my mind.

that's why the tyson chandler signing is such a big deal.

He played like steamed crap in the playoffs. Guy hasn't developed any point guard instincts in his time and those assist stats are outright misleading if not wrong because the guy averages 2assists a game. I believe he had 5 assists like 3/4times I can remember.

During the playoffs all he did was back peddle and allow Rondo to practically beat us all by himself. At some point your supposed to plant your damn feet to stop his drive otherwise whats the use of staying in front of your man. He'd just back peddle until he was out of bounds giving Rondo easy layup after layup

I missed your post.....I basically said the same thing you said. I don't think a bum shoulder is any excuse for such a poor defensive effort. The shoulder may effect shooting but not defense when all he had to do at times was plant his damn feet.

RonRon @ 12/9/2011 11:40 AM
he's still learning, its still early for him. About the defense part, I think he feels he has to get the ball back, to make up on for the bad plays/to's he makes.
He is what he is, not a good decision maker. He is a defender though, plays the passing lanes well but he OVERPLAYS many times, having a floor general behind him.
Tyson Chandler and Shumpert, taking the ball and decision making, they will all have a nice trio together.

There are stuff he must work on, his ability to penetrate and finish consistently, dribble both hands, and pulling up with the mid range game.

With the MLE still not finding a suitor, I get a feeling something is boiling up.
If we amnesty, Billups, then don't sign Tyson Chandler yet, then Cavaliers amnesty Baron Davis, would we be able to claim him?

for me TD's playoff was a bit more than what you just wrote.

Here's the scenario: TD is not really ready for PG prime time, he is still a backup PG right now. He also knows he CAN'T foul cause there is not much of a backup behind him. Also, the fact that NY did not have a shot-blocker makes him that much worse.

Add in Chandler and some depth at PG and TD gets better.

And let's be realistic: Rondo a damn quick PG to stay in front of for ANYONE.

bum shoulder doesnt affect defense? Really? Cmon people. Our guards can now play with a frontcourt that will protect the rim. That and health will be big factors. Time will tell..
loweyecue @ 12/9/2011 12:10 PM
I like his intensity but that's the only thing I like about him. I just don't think he has any PG skills. No vision, no passing skills what is it that people are so in love with? I almost threw things at the TV when watching him in the platoffs. This guy is the Anthony Randolph of PGs. He doesn't know what his role is and cannot be a solution at PG. beating your own teammates down to the other end in a foot race only to chuck up a 3 pointer with someone's hand in your face is NOT what we need from our PG. being an athlete is great but you need to harness that into you style of play. MDA made Duhon look half decent, and TD still looks like he is a babe in the woods.
