According to Mark Berman...

Source confirms Rautins will go to make it sign and trade but that must be to clear more space. Knicks must be adding cash. No midlevel.
absolutely no problem with this. rautins never looked like he would amount to much; thank god we got landry in the same draft.
Awesome. If the Knicks really like Rautins they can pick him back up when he is waived by the Mavs.
I'm hearing on ESPN that it isn't a sign-and-trade and that Turiaf is going to Washington. Even if they do both, it just frees up a roster spot so I'm okay with that.
On twitter speculation seems to be that the trade exception would be used to absorb Hedo's contract in a trade that would get them Howard.
It is a sign and trade. Rautins plus 12 Million dollar trade exception to Dallas for Tyson. Turiaf to Wiz is a separate deal to dump salary for Tyson.

so the knicks amnestied billups and traded turiaf & cash to washington; both to clear space for chandler.
they then are doing the rautins S&T i'm guessing just to clear a roster spot. not sure what the strategic move is, but its essentially billups, turiaf, and rautins for tyson.
OK, here's the official reason (from mark berman):

Sources confirm #Knicks still have just mini $2.5M for under cap teams not $5M midlevel despite sign & trade. Rautins gave them more room.

Wow! If that happens, Dallas is right back in the championship talk.
Sticky this in your computers: Amnesty to a player = No MLE

Lots of teams have set themselves up to make a good run at Dwight. Only one can get him. I still see D12 in Lakers gold and purple when it's all said and done. Possibly with Chris Paul next to him.

I'd hate that with a passion. I can't believe how easy it is for the Lakers to simply reload with super stars while a team like us needs to struggle mightily to get to that point.
Also, how unoriginal it is to have Dwight end up a Laker? Do stars want to simply re-do past stars' lives instead of creating their own legacy? "Im Dwight Howard, aka Shaq 2."

The Lakers have no realistic chance to get Howard in a trade or as a free agent unless they don't do the Paul trade and give up Gasola and Bynum to the Magic. It's not happening.

The Knicks lost the MLE because they sank below the cap when they got rid of Chauncey. They still get the 2.5 mini exception and can use the MLE when they're over the cap next offseason.
