Knicks · Landry Fields (page 2)
Extend him now and the MLE remains intact if indeed it is in jeopardy in a Fields extension.
Fields reminds of Brian Cardinal. Dudes great off the 2nd round scrap heap... impact bench player for stretches, smart, good as a spot starter... but give the guy a 5 year MLE type contract and man oh man are you overpaying. I hope Im wrong, Fields is a super likable dude... just calling it like I see it.

He's smart and has great instincts and hard work but does he have the physical tools? Remember he was a 6'7 PF in college. If I had to pick one or the other I would rather have Shawn Williams who can defend every position on the floor at 6'9 with a 7'4 wingspan and he's a far superior shooter and only a year or two older.Fields reminds of Brian Cardinal. I think the problem is he's a natural SF. As you say, too slow for a NBA SG.
Fields is a very smart player who works hard and will continue to get better. He already is among the best rebounding guards in the game, a decent shooter and a very good finisher. Also plays like he knows the game -- makes great cuts, is unselfish and a good passer. I think his d will improve and I think people underestimate his athleticism and toughness because he's a Stanford kid.
Granted, his game fell off after the Melo trade and he was downright crappy in the playoffs, but I still have very high hopes for him and think he will become a borderline all star in 2-3 years. Remember, he was a leading rookie of the year candidate with at least a couple rookie of the month wins during the first 2/3 of the season.
Shawne, in my opinion, is a borderline rotation player on any decent team. I'm not sure he can match his shooting numbers from last year on a go-forward basis (remember, he had a couple of months where he was out of his mind from 3-point range, but then fell back; what if he doesn't have that kind of hot streak again?), and I hate the way he finishes around the basket. He does play pretty good d. I still like him for the Knicks and hope we resign him if no one better becomes available because of his defense and his shooting from the pf position, which works well in the
system.

My interpretation of Fields ability is too far from where you are, my conclusion is different though. If Fields has a long serviceable career like Brian Cardinal or Luke Walton, I'd argue that's awesome to get from the second round scrap heap. He's a smart player who contributes what he can. I think both Williams and Fields can contribute, and it sounds to me like Williams will pursue a larger contract than the Knicks can offer
Need guys like that.

Why would Fields have more upside? Williams has one more seasons worth of games Fields has and the guy plays and works like this is his last chance in the league. Im less into the feel good story, I just see Williams as a better fit and a better prospect with better physical tools.I guess I'm one of the overraters. I don't think Shawne is anywhere near Fields in terms of talent, value or upside.

I like Fields a lot and I think he's an example of what made Walsh so good. I only bring up the knocks on him because someone mentioned resigning him and using the MLE, my thought is why would we want to? We can give him a nice 2 year contract for $5mm. Throw in a player option for a 3rd year at $3mm and go from there. IF the guy explodes this year than great, but remember... everyone is going to look better playing with this front line.
I would rather have the bigger more athletic guy. Williams can defend 1s-5s with his size. Thats a nice piece to develop. He could be a bigger Bruce Bowen and he plays with a nasty streak. I hope he comes back.

One new thing expect to see this year is Landry Fields coming off screens more, a la Rip Hamilton. He's improved in that area.

Fields has worked on this and a faster release, and obviously continued work from 3-point land. Like it.

You've got to be kidding about Fields being an inferior athlete. Fields has a 39" vertical and he's quick for a guy his size. He may not have the same lateral quickness as a smaller SG, but he's far from slow. Shawne is not more athletic than Fields. Shawne is a good athlete too but let's not overstate his athletic ability. They fill 2 completely different roles.
Fields was perfect starting for this team most of the year. I think he's going to be able to sustain his level of play now in his 2nd year. Fields was able to be that glue guy and make an impact without having to call plays for him. Now he'll be integrated into the scheme a bit more and I think he'll do well with a slightly expanded role. Shawne was great in his role as a stretch 4. I hope we can bring him back.
To his credit, Shawne, too, won a role coming out of nowhere. But there's a difference between winning a spot in the rotation vs. earning 30-plus minutes a game.
Add to that, Fields' instincts just seem much better than Shawne's. Fields is always attacking the hole. Shawne is more comfortable falling away or hanging out behind the 3.
We're probably closer on this than the back and forth makes it seem. I think both of us like both players and want to keep both.

People here seem to be down on Fields, I don't get it. He had great first season and deserves to start on this team and carve out his niche.

I know Fields has been working hard at shooting thr 3. I think the post Melo Fields was not indicitive of the player he is. The kid can run the floor, finish, rebound and will hopefully be more consistant. If not for Blake Griffin he would have probably won ROY. He's going to be a glue guy and every team needs one.
