Knicks · Melo's got a brand new bag (page 1)

Can you feel it in the air? Melo's adventure into the point-forward territory has me pumped up. Will he be Nash? No, he will be way more dangerous. I am not the only one either

Yes I liked the breakdowns in this article. The videos really show how effective Melo can be in this role and this is just the beginning. I think a healthy mix of running thru Melo and a healthy B Diddy will be very effective in time. It never hurts to have multiple ways of attacking teams. IMO this will allow Melo to evolve as a player and reach his full potential.
SupremeCommander @ 12/27/2011 1:16 AM
He obviously has enough talent to pull it off. It's just if he is willing to sacrifice, a la Michael Jordan, to pull it off. He can obviously create his own shot from anywhere on the floor. If Melo can turn into one of those players that sets everyone else up for the first three quarters, then owns the 4th, then holy fuckin shit. One of those things that sounds a whole lot easier than it is though

ramtour - great thread title

The best things Melo did on Sunday were not about scoring, it was his demeanor as a leader. We know Amar'e stepped up and said, "the Knicks are back" and worked his ass off to prove himself right. We know 0-2 Dallas misses Tyson Chandler barking out defensive assignments.

Carmelo Anthony... playing with the same joy he showed last season, appeared to flash fewer smiles and more of a competitive grimace during game one. He put the Knicks on his back, for that afternoon, and willed them past a legendary franchise who knows it is their birthright to win EVERY time they step on the court. That was the freakin' Boston Celtics. No matter who they suit up, they are dangerous and have the hardware to back it up.

If Carmelo can lift the Knicks past the Celtics, and his teammates adopt his message of fierce determination....

... the Knicks future is so bright, we all gotta wear shades.

This would be a huge step forward in the evolution of his game. I have no doubt that he can make many excellent passes like the ones shown in the videos in that article. The issue is how many bad decisions leading to turnovers will he also make?
misterearl @ 12/27/2011 9:40 AM
Bonn1997 - how can you be unhappy with someone trying to make the pass? Turnovers are inevitable. It is not about fearing Carmelo turning the ball over, as you suggest. The idea is to get better.

"You play to win the game."

If the talented Mr Anthony is committed to reinventing his game for the sake of winning, how is that not a beautiful thing?

Melo has the skills but Im worried about the wear and tear. Dude isn't Lebron James physically.

Nobody is Lebron James physically.

An assist in the backcourt, from a legit lead guard, will help Carmelo endure the physical beating.

total games played by lebron (starting in 03): 79, 80, 79, 78, 74, 81, 76, 79
total games played by melo (starting in 03): 82, 75, 80, 65, 77, 66, 69, 77

melo has played in more games in 3 years; lebron more games in 5 years.

total games: 628 (lebron) to 592 (melo).
career average minutes per game: lebron 40, melo 36.

lebron is in his own league, durability-wise. but melo isn't far off. 36 minutes per game with 4 out of 7 seasons with over 75 games played is nothing to scoff at.

If he will step into this ill-passing mode, there will eventually be some improvement.

Passing quality increases as Melo becomes comfortable with his teammates.

The longer Melo is used this way the better he's going to get at recognizing great passes verses poor ones. This is his 1st time playing like this and there is bound to be a learning curve. We can't be concerned with only this year, but he next 4 years, cuz that's what is most important. The core of this team has to fully develop chemistry and with the short preseason, there was no time to work on things. So we have to be patient and look at the long term goal of developing this style of play and chemistry.

I hope you're right. He's gotta find a way to get Amare more than 11 shots though.

I actually think that is a function of just how the offense has to work with Tyson in the game as the pick man. STAT ends up on the weakside as a 3rd option. The only way to fix that is with a PG who can run PnR with STAT. Then we can cut down on the number of Melo dominant possessions. This is where having B Diddy will come in and i'm sure that we'll see the return of the high % STAT PnR. Right now with TD averse to running PnR we're kind of stuck. If Lin can show any kind of ability to run PnR with STAT that could also be another option if they have time to develop anything. I've given up on TD.

If Jeremy Lin can run a pick and roll play with Amar'e the Knicks suddenly change from one-on-one pick up chaos, to a more cohesive offense where guys understand their collective roles.

Who knows? We already have a gifted player who moves well without the ball. Perhaps Landry Fields starts getting involved in the flow again, the same way he was recognized by Ray Felton.

Wouldn't THAT be special?

Or is that asking too much?

I believe this is more because Toney took 19 shots than anything Carmelo did.

That's a fair point

"Anthony did not speak yesterday at practice. However, D'Antoni was asked whether Anthony looked quicker in Sunday’s season opener than he did last season. D’Antoni offered, “I do know he’s very focused and in tune and getting in the weight room and doing what it’s going to take to have a stellar year...”

One of the things that kind of got overlooked is that Melo is playing some good D as well. He got a steal and a block, but those numbers don't tell the whole story. He is playing guys very close, and trying to poke the ball away, getting under their skin. Those fouls that kept him out the 3rd quarter all came on the defensive end, if I remember correctly.

That's true. I'd like to see him average a block a game.
