Knicks · TD is starting to get it... (page 1)

holfresh @ 12/30/2011 11:59 AM
Last night by far has been the best I have seen TD play the point...He was did a good job in the first half...First quarter he got into the lane and kicked the ball out...He is still picking up his dribble too early...But he is now looking around to see who is open and making crisper passes...The star on this team don't respect him and are taking the ball way too early from him..Melo and STAT both taking the ball at the elbow and slow the game and ball movement down...I kill the guy when he makes dumb plays...Today was the best I have seen him play the point and kudos to him for his effort...There is hope...Keep giving him reps..There is light at the end of the tunnel...
rp @ 12/30/2011 12:06 PM
It's false hope but agree he did a little better.
nyk4ever @ 12/30/2011 12:06 PM
wow, my take is the complete opposite of yours. i thought td played terrible last night. he forced shots left and right and he still can't run the pick n roll.
Bippity10 @ 12/30/2011 12:12 PM
Yeah, I'm with Nyk4ever, I didn't see much improvement in TD. There is very littel penetration, he picks up his dribble consantly, our offense is stagnant when he is on or off teh floor. They ran a pick and roll where TD made a nice pass to Chandler. It was so noticeable and memorable because it seems like the only one he has run all year. he also tends to hold on to the ball one split second too long before swinging to the next man. This allows teams to recover and causes our shooters to shoot out of rythm. This offense that has the Pick and roll as a main component is just not getting any legitmate ball moving pick and roll plays. We have no legit ball movers.

If u recorded the game, look at the first half again...You will see three crisp passes for assist...You will see a guy getting is the lane...Don't woory about is shots right now. worry about how he is getting others involved...Check it out and let me know...

If u recorded it...Look at he first quarter...Tell me what u think...It's easy to get lost in the overall bad play in the end...

It's also easy to look at a couple of nice passes and judge a player to be a good passer because of that, let alone a PG. Tony Douglas will NEVER be a good PG. As soon as we, MDA, the NBA, the media and his Knicks teammates realize that TD is more like a guy who can penetrate for his own shot, hit open 3s, play defense in spurts and hustle, people will learn to appreciate him. However, he's NOT a PG. This isn't TDs fault. It's just the way the cookie crumbles. The overall decision making of the entire team is awful when TD is relied on to play the PG.

And we also have to realize that Melo is NOT Scottie Pippen and Grant Hill. He's not a point foward. He's a pure scorer offensively. Yes, I hate when he chucks up 3s... but his game is not to distribute and to stand around watching other players make bad decisions.

AnubisADL @ 12/30/2011 12:24 PM
Two words for Douglas' penetration.

Dude is murdered by opposing PG's nightly and can't run a half court offense.

Can't put sprinkles on dogshit and call it ice cream.

unfortunately i didn't dvr it bro. i'll pay extra close attention tomorrow night (or atleast try to inbetween drinks lol) but i was specifically watching td play last night. he just looks too robotic out there when he's not shooting. and when he's shooting i feel like he's taking the worst shots imaginable. i really do think he's best suited to be a offensive spark off the bench like he has been before this year - he's very good at that.

umynot @ 12/30/2011 12:32 PM
TD played five good minutes last night. Def not whole first half!

Second half HE SUCKED! Like usual as a PG

He passes decent for a SG which is what TD is

Both losses are on him simply because with TD handling the ball we have no flow!

We have a 7 sec or less type offense but it takes TD 15 before he stops running in circles.
He simply can't see the passing lane. Never throws the oop to our high flyers
I think sadly Dudu was a better distributer on our team the this kid!

Iman getting hurt set us back cause when he played ball was moving much better now it's one pass
And shoot or one on one basketball!

TD at best is a back up SG

Uptown @ 12/30/2011 12:34 PM
One of the many things TD does not do is push the ball in transition off the rebound. He puts zero pressure on the defense....

That's such a shame. I wish I had his speed. I would be off to races every play!

Bonn1997 @ 12/30/2011 12:51 PM
Douglas can penetrate and kick it out. So can Carmelo. They can't penetrate and create for bigs near the basket though.

I don't doubt that he looked good for a stretch and I do remember what you are talking about. Problem is that he cannot sustain it because he's not really a PG. He doesn't think like a PG. After strong PG play he always goes back to his instincts which is that of a scorer looking for his own shot, or a PG that is so confused with what he is supposed to be doing that you can almost hear him thinking.

It reminds me of Nate. We wanted Nate to be a PG so badly. He had spurts where he made some real nice passes and played the part of a PG. But he wasn't doing what a PG does. Controlling tempo, in control of the offense, directing. He's just out there making passes like any okay passing SG would do.

This was part of Marbury's problem too. Marbury was a great passing SG. Maybe the best passing SG in NBA history. But unfortunately he played the point and had no clue how to create tempo, how to get guys shots in the correct spot, When to go to a guy to get him going, when to ignore a guy because he's going mess it all up when he gets the ball 30 feet from the basket, when to create for yourself, when to take yourself out of the game offensively. How to pick up the pace. when to slow down the pace. When it's okay to jack up a contested 80 footer and when you pass up on a 10 footer. When to stop the offense, call a play and make sure your team gets the best shot possible because this particular offensive trip can affect the momentum of the game for the next 10 minutes. True PG's get all of this stuff. Most of it without ever being coached. it's instinct. Understanding that this moment 3 minutes in to the second quarter when you are up 6 is a key moment of the game and a good shot is a necessity cannot be taught. It's a feeling. It's an understanding. Coaches have it. Great players have it. Great PG's have it. Tony Douglas does not have it.

Bannable Offense

"Marbury was a great passing SG. Maybe the best passing SG in NBA history."

Jerry West. Oscar Robertson. Earl Monroe. Hell... Sam Jones was a much better passer than Marbury. NBA history did not start in the 1980s

You do not Ban the Bip. You bow to the Bip. Do you think I gave that statement more then 6 seconds of thought before I typed it. Of course not. The point was still well made and legitimate and correct. Now you go make love to your nostalgia and I'll focus on dominating the message boards.

He is what he is a perfect 6th or 7th guy on this team

Pearl was a SF. Oscar and Jerry were PGs.
