Knicks · MDA on ball movement minus Amare (page 1)

mrKnickShot @ 12/31/2011 10:56 PM
MDA just admitted that the ball movement was alot better without Amare (since maybe it is not that good with both of them together). But he said that it has to get better to make them a great team.

Gonna be very intersting to see this blend play out. Also, it looks like Amare will get even fewer touches / chances since he is no longer the primary screener / PNR guy. He better learn how to mesh better with this new team. If he is willing and can play unlazy defense ala Jorts tonight, we can be really good. If not, bad signs for our fate.

The only changes that need to be made is what we saw tonight. keep the Ball moving and most important is for TD to actually RUN THE DAMN PLAY!!! It's called PnR and it works with either STAT or Tyson just the same. There's really no excuse for why we haven't seen more of STAT in the PnR except that as the PG you have to direct your bigs and actually point or use your eyes or head gesture to tell them where you want them to set up. After a while you don't have to do anything cuz the bigs will have a feel for how the PG is gonna play and they'll get in synch. It's called "Chemistry".

I don't expect TD to turn into Nash, but surely he can get better with repetition. The more and more you run a play the better you'll get at executing and that has to be what TD does over and over again until it's second nature. Doesn't mean he'll turn into John Stockton, but anyone can get decent at running the play. I liked what I saw from TD tonight, but it's just a small step. He's got to keep doing it 62 more games.

Actually before the season started STAT said he would no longer be the primary PnR guy as per the coach...Chandler is the main PnR guy and STAT said he will be playing more on the perimeter(jump shooter)...I think MDA is nuts...

mrKnickShot @ 1/1/2012 12:59 AM
Well I agree that TD needs to do a better job but to MDA's point, the issue that needs to be fixed is that when both Amare and Melo are on the court the flow is more stagnent and that has to change.

If he said this I agree. Amare is the most dominant pick and roll guy since Karl Malone. Just because Tyson is playing the 5 doesn't mean he has to have that roll on the offense. This is supposed to be a dominant offense. One that outscores the opponents. Tyson's roll should be minimal on offense when Amare is on the floor. I hope Tyson's new role isn't the result of rigidity on the coach. Jerry Sloan had a lot of centers but Karl Malone was always at the end of the pick and roll.

I actually think MDA is trying to save Amare due to the wear and tear of the type of game he plays...I'm limit his time before I change his game...

Not such a bad idea now that they can't use their amnesty on him. However, I hope we won't see him turn into a jump shooter primarily - we got him for his explosiveness especially on the PnR - that is what made him so great with Nash.

I agree about saving Amare. However, he seemed pretty sullen and talked about how flying affected the swelling in his ankle. I hope D'Antoni deals with this injury with a big picture mentality and I think he will.
crzymdups @ 1/1/2012 1:28 AM
if the ball keeps moving, it will find an open amar'e many times each game. that's just the principal of ball movement and the facts of life with melo and tyson in the front court with him. good ball movement will only lead to WIDE OPEN dunks and layups for Amar'e. hopefully he buys in and starts moving the ball more.

Use the amnesty on STAT???...Do you understand the reason for the Knicks resurgence if there is one is because of Amare...The only reason guys were lining up to come here is Amare..Somehow u think Amare should be trying to adjust to this "new" team... The Knicks aren't going anywhere without Amare...

He has an uninsured contract for a reason. I am not saying they needed to use it on him now. However, if his health does not hold up which is OBVIOUSLY a major concern, they will no longer be able to use the amnesty on him and that could cripple the franchise.

This is nothing new and not my own genius thought. He is and will always be a health risk / gamble. That does not mean he is not a star. He does need to play better defense, stop turning the ball over and keep the ball moving. He will get back his great jumper which was automatic last year.

mrKnickShot @ 1/1/2012 11:45 AM
Hotfresh, are you saying that you don't think the knicks entertained the thought that they might possibly nned the amnesty for Amare?

Come On!

The Knicks game Amare 100 mil with bad knees to come here and play ball...What has changed?

mrKnickShot @ 1/1/2012 11:55 AM
Yes - and it was and is a gamble based on his resume of health issues - hence the uninsured cotract. I am not saying it was/is not worth the risk. However, when this AMNESTY GIFT was given to them, I am sure that they entertained the idea that they might need it for him.

And to me, he definitely looks like he lost a bit of explosiveness and is also pressing.

And you can tell this from 3 games where he is now playing the role of a perimeter player as instructed by his head coach?

I think everyonse saw this the second half of the season last year. Don't get me wrong, I would do the signing all over again and it also made them relevent again.

RonRon @ 1/1/2012 1:30 PM
you really cant argue with this post.
I was anti Melo after the trade and he has changed his game so much since then.
However, Stat this year, seems to have took the dark hole in him to a Melo's level, which I didn't like last year.
Melo changed it slowly late last year and isn't that bad this year.

I am not sure if Stat was hurt by these trade rumors or if he wants a piece of the spotlight back.
He says he worked on his ball handle and 3s, also getting bigger, but hes trying too hard scoring.
We can only have 1 person that plays the "selfish mode"
That is Carmelo Anthony, no longer Stat, the offense no longer runs through him, and he has problems adjusting.
Last year Melo was the one that was the complete black hole while Amare was more willing to pass the ball.
This year it is the complete opposite.
I think Melo saw this when he was hurt for a couple of days last year, and the he saw his team mates moving the ball at the bench.

Anthony is very much willing to pass the ball this year and work it field.
He will take a bad shot or forcing 1 on 2/3 right in the defenders, taking bad shots.
The black hole in Amare this year is just as bad as Melo last year.
Once Stat touches the ball, he will try to score 95% once he touches the ball.
He doesn't have the range that Jorts has.
In fact hasn't been hitting his step behind free throw shots consistently either.

He is not using his team mates as a threat, he doesn't know how to move off the ball *besides to try to score*, but the spacing has changed with Tyson on the team.
He has to know when to crash, when to fight for position *instead of trying to jump for the rebound*, when to set screens for his team mates *not necessarily for a shot, sometimes just to earn them a step *and sometimes he hes to just stay back without crashing to prevent the fast break.
The PF is able to guard him much better, the Center can be the help defender as well.
Most importantly, teams are using the "black hole" treatment against him, with our inability to penetrate in the paint.
