Knicks · Paul Westphal Gone - Ex Phoenix coach > MDA (page 1)

Why did Paul Westphal get fired? He had 0 team. So you can easily say, "get him the players! His point guard has a scorers first mentality. Ah ... just wait to see how he does when he gets any sort of team."

I mean c'mon! He did alot better in Phoenix than MDA. A shot away from winning it all. And he actually had a real system in place there not SUPER Steve Nash who is essentially a couch with the ball.

Bottom line is that coaches get fired even when they have mediocre talent. Pleople don't care about reasons / excuses. Maybe its the owner or the GM('s) or even the fans in NY. Nobody cares - if you are dealt a bad hand that really sux for you but that's life, in sports, in sales, in business ...

You can hope to be dealt better cards on you next team.

Westphal was here before and he is just horrible...

I know and DO NOT want him to take over. I am just making a point in regards to his success in PHX - he did great there but he still sux now.

And, that just because MDA had success in PHX (thanks to Nash) does make him a great coach. Too many on this board keep talking about his PHX daya / stats.

This ain't PHX no more.

They don't talk about MDA defense never being ranked better than 20 throughout his entire career.

his defense should not even be ranked.

I thought this whole MDA needs Nash thing was debunked last season when MDA had Felton played top-notch ball at the PG position....

Before last season, a lot of people didn't think we were even a playoff team and MDA had us fighting for a top 6 seed.

I would not say top notch - he played well. Started out not so great, then had a nice stretch, prior to being traded he was not playing as good. His games were also completely dependent on the 3 falling and it was for a while but then regressed.

More people thought we were a playoff team in the weak Eastern Conference. 2 games above 0.500 really isn't a big accomplishment. If you count the playoffs we were actually 2 games below 0.500 and the last Celtics regular season game was alot of their 2nd unit. Especially considering that we were on a steady downward spiral in the last 2/3 of the season as teams adjusted to us and the intensity of play increased approaching the playoffs.

Well, we had a bad stretch of games as the trade rumors intensified...but I do remember our team playing a really good game against the Hawks right before the Melo trade.

I don't think it's fair to say that we regressed or were on a downward spiral since one can also make the argument that with the trade deadline over, maybe our young guys aren't as pressured to do well and may have gotten back to where they were pre-Melo rumors.

All I know, is that a lot of people in the mainstream media didn't expect the Knicks to be in the playoffs and we were clearly in the picture pre-Melo deal (it was a given we would make it).

Considering a lot of people felt he deserved All-Star consideration, I would say top notch since Felton played the best ball of his career under D'Antoni. His game was definitely not completely dependent on the 3 as he became very good at running the PnR and setting up Amare. If Douglas could do the PnR that well, we wouldn't be suffering as much right now even with his shot not falling.

You're not wrong s3231! You've got it right. I've said before that perception is often mistaken for reality and the MDA haterz on this board are proof positive of my belief.

I will once again list the FACTS. This is what Felton did as a Knick:

Assists
Name FG% 3pt% FT% Reb Ast TO Stl PPG
Steve Nash 49.2 39.5 91.2 3.5 11.4 3.5 0.6 14.8
Rajon Rondo 47.5 23.3 56.8 4.4 11.2 3.4 2.3 10.6
Deron Williams 43.9 33.1 84.5 4.0 10.3 3.5 1.2 20.1
Chris Paul 46.3 38.8 87.8 4.1 9.8 2.2 2.4 15.9
Raymond Felton 42.3 32.8 86.7 3.6 9.1 3.3 1.8 17.1
Jose Calderon 44.0 36.5 85.4 3.0 8.9 2.2 1.2 9.8
John Wall 41.0 29.6 76.6 4.6 8.3 3.8 1.8 16.4
Russell Westbrook 44.2 33.0 84.2 4.6 8.2 3.9 1.9 21.9

With Felton as the PG, the Knicks were 2nd in scoring and 5th in Offensive efficiency. Basically NY was a top offensive team. In fact they were ahead of the Suns.

Being ranked low in points allowed is different than defensive efficiency, which is defensive points allowed adjusted for pace, or something to that effect.

MDA's defenses in Phoenix were always right in the middle of the pack, even in the low teens.
