(Shumpert) had 14 assists in the last three games, second only to Anthony’s 17, and just 7 turnovers.

"A knee injury on opening day delayed Shumpert’s impact, and he is still regaining his strength and stamina. But his value is clear. Since returning Jan. 4, Shumpert has averaged 13.8 points, 4.3 assists, 4 rebounds and 2.8 steals in 32.5 minutes in four games. He shot 50 percent from the field during that stretch, including 37.5 from 3-point range."

"Knicks fans have engaged in their share of irrational love affairs in recent years, falling for undisciplined exuberance (Nate Robinson), unbridled athleticism (Renaldo Balkman) and plucky overachievement (Landry Fields), only for their hearts to be crushed."

Cool. (smiling) How much is "quite a bit"?

I guess "quite a bit" = "at times"

Once his legs heal the jumper will fall.

Q. What is the Knicks record with Shumpert in the starting lineup?

gunsnewing @ 1/11/2012 10:14 PM
Might be the legs. Regardless Shump is a big reason why were are now 6-4 instead of 2-4 primarily because of his defense and playmaking
ChuckBuck @ 1/11/2012 10:19 PM
Tough game for Shumpert tonight. 4 TOs, 5-15 shooting, PlusMinus of -6

He is a rookie after all, but as long as he holds the fort for B Diddy and Knicks continue to win, we'll take it!

Yup i'm not expecting perfection from Shump. Rookies go thru things over the course of a season. Just another learning experience. He'll cringe when he sees himself in the video sessions. On the other hand his D was very aggressive and helped the team to gain a lead, so you take the good with the bad with a good rookie.

His D was great. And he played extremely well in the beginning of the 4th in that stretch where they pushed the lead to 17pts one last time... and then they all proceeded to take the rest of the night off on offense and hope melo would get fouled. but i thought shump had some good moments. some bad ones.

jrue was a tough matchup though. and he didn't let jrue kill them, which is important.

stats are seriously overrated....
If you aren't watching the games and just looking at STATS, he might not be that impressive.
Watching ESPN or High lights are not the same as watching the game..
If you don't seriously appreciate what Iman brings to the table, I think you have to take a closer look at what TD has been doing at PG when we on our losing streak on both ends of the floor...

Agreed, Shumpert plays terrific on the ball D, but he was very careless with the ball in the 4th qtr this game. D'Antoni let him have it too when he got to the bench. Either way, he's learning on the job and will only improve with time.

Interesting Stat of the night, Toney Douglas PlusMinus +16

the Shump/Toney backcourt looked pretty good tonight. and Toney's defense was actually very good.

This is true. and for those who follow +/-, he led the knicks with +16 - not too shabby.

Shump likes to chuck. Does other things well, but there is no reason he should shoot 15 times and shoot 6 threes. He should not shoot more than Stoudemire either.

He does some stuff well, and much, much better than I anticipated. I do think that nbadraft.net nailed him (even though they misjudged his ceiling):

Strengths: Stat-stuffing athlete with ideal size for either guard position ... Stands 6'5.5" in shoes with a wingspan of 6'9.5" ... Extremely athletic ... Explosive leaping ability, recorded a 42" vertical leap at the 2011 NBA Draft Combine ... Very fast in the open-court, able to pull down a rebound and go coast-to-coast in a matter of seconds ... Very strong for a point guard ... Uses his strength well on both offense and defense ... Scary in transition ... Excellent slasher ... Defenders practically bounce off him when he drives in the paint ... Able to finish in spectacular fashion at the rim, displaying fantastic hang-time and body-control ... A capable, though unsteady, playmaker ... Has good drive-and-dish potential at the next level ... A tenacious defensive player that works very hard to shut his man down... With his length and athleticism he could guard any of the 1-3 positions in the NBA ... Has "lock-down defender" potential ... Forces a ton of turnovers (2.7 SPG) ... A very good rebounder at the guard position, averaging 5.9 a game his junior year... Solid free-throw shooter (80.6%) that gets to the line a lot (5.64 FTA per game) due to his aggressiveness ... A stat-sheet stuffer, had a 22 point, 12 rebound, 11 assist, 7 steal performance against Virginia Tech on January 15th, 2011 …

Weaknesses: Lacks stability/discipline on the court ... Inconsistent … Not efficient at all ... Horrid shot-selection ... Liable to shoot at any time, even when being closely guarded ... Likes to shoot off the dribble on a good deal of his isolation possessions, despite only connecting on 20% of these attempts ... Shoots nearly 5 three pointers per game, despite only shooting 27.8% from behind the arc ... Will often go for the flashy play instead of the easy play, which can lead to unforced turnovers ... Very poor jump shooter, and hasn't shown any improvement in this area during his three-year career with Georgia Tech ... Needs the ball in his hands a lot to be effective on offense and he certainly won't have as many isolation opportunities at the next level ... Should look to take advantage of his size and strength more in the post, but has yet to add this dimension to his game ... Attitude has been questioned in the past, but to his credit he appears to have matured over the past year ...

Overall: Shumpert has rare physical tools for a guard on any level of basketball ... His defense should get him on an NBA roster and possibly into a rotation, but his poor basketball IQ will certainly hurt his effectiveness ... Should be an early-mid second round pick this year ...

I've said it previously, but I do think TD is an ideal third guard. He's not a lead guard or an off guard. He's a quality basketball player that was asked to do too much. He absolutely awful in a main role. But whose fault is putting him in that position? AS a supporting piece, I think he can play, and I think he'll last ~10 years in the league

Couldn't have said it better. Once Baron is running the show I think TD turns into an ideal 6th man.

Under the I'm-too-lazy-to-look-for-the-FU-Landry-Fields-thread; why does it seem like Shump's highlights increase in direct proportion to Landry's lousy lowlights?

Is there a connection? Is there a conspiracy? Could it have something to do with the departure of Rautins? I miss the Landy Andy Show... sort of...

The Landry Andy Show should get replaced with the Shump Jorts Show.

misterearl @ 1/12/2012 8:37 AM
The Answer Man Misses The Landry and Andy Show As Well... Sort Of

Q. jrodmc - Is there a connection?

A. There was a great connection between Fields and Rautins. Problem was Rautins could not dribble the ball at the NBA level. If he was worse than Douglas in practice his handle must have REALLY been pitiful.

Q. jrodmc - Is there a conspiracy?

A. Nah, just rookie (and sophomore) growing pains. “Down the stretch, I had a bad quarter,” (Shumpert) said. “I’ve got to clean that up. I made it real tough on our stars tonight, just turning the ball over down the stretch. Tomorrow will be a better day.” Stand up guy that Shump.

Q. jrodmc - Could it have something to do with the departure of Rautins?

A. Shumpert: “I just have to be tougher with the ball for one, and two we have to be in something,” he said. “A lot of times we came down and we didn’t get in our offense and that reflects on me. Myself, Toney (Douglas) and Landry (Fields) we gotta make sure that our guys are in something.”

Preferably something that does not rely on Carmelo to take every shot. Too obvious.

"gets his mind right."?

Are you watching the games or just making ish up?

Shump changes things. An anger to win. Look in his eyes. He plays with the ferocity of Michael Jordan.

Yeah I said it.
