Knicks · Who is the better prospect...Gallo or Shump.... (page 2)

Erniecat @ 1/11/2012 1:28 AM
To me, it is not even close -- Shumpert.

Why? Because right away, we can clearly see that he will have an impact in the NBA -- mainly because he already has had an impact (we're 4-1 when he plays, 0-3 when he does not play). And not merely as a "complementary" player, like we saw in Fields for much of last season. Fields was thought of as a strong role player, while Shumpert is thought of as an impact player. Someone who will come into a game and make plays on offense and defense, and will just about always have an impact when he is on the floor.

With Gallo, it always seems to be about what he will be able to do in the future. And while he can impact a game from time to time, too often (at least with the Knicks; I don't watch him with the Nuggets too much) he has zero impact on a game.

So if I had a choice right now between the two players, it is not even close: I take Shumpert all the way.

And by the way, yes, you can form an opinion even though he's played just five games. Scouts and GMs do it all the time.

CashMoney @ 1/11/2012 7:08 AM
I was a Gallo fan and still am but I think Shumpert is going to be the better player. This kid is a player. Gallo showed flashes from time to time but I can't wait to see where Shump's game is going to be in 4 years. Shump may be our best pick since Mark Jackson.

If we stood the draft develope player course, our team would look something like

This is true, it is like an apple and orange.

I like Gallo's trey range, his length, his clutch balls, he can steal the rock, he can dunk the rock, he can shoot the rock, he will swat the rock; great baller.

Shump brings a confidence that is unusual in a rookie, he will go hard, he will steal the rock, he will lock down the gates. His brain is intense.

newyorknewyork @ 1/11/2012 7:42 AM
Gallinari is no longer a prospect today. He also is doing pretty damn good for himself right now. 17pts 5rebs 3ast 2stls. He is also only shooting 25% from 3, if he was shooting his normal 33-34% from three he probably would be averaging 20pts a game.

On a side note the guys we "should have drafted over him". Anthony Randolph 7.8pts a game 2rebs and Jarred Bayless 8.3pts per game 1.7. I guess they got there community pick right, who would have thought.

Gallo was viewed as a better prospect which is why he was taken in the lottery and Shumpert wasn't but I think they close to even out. Shumpert may have a higher ceiling though because he isn't going to wait for teammates to give him the okay to make plays he will get after it himself.

misterearl @ 1/11/2012 7:50 AM
Why did we give Anthony Randolph away again?

FoeDiddy wrote:Gallo has shot 42.5% from the field in his career..37% from 3 in his career. This from a "Sharp Shooter"? 4.5 Rebounds from a 6'11 guy. 1.6 assist.

So you don't think Shump can equal this or even easily surpass any of those stats?

Carmelo is supposedly the best rebounding SF in the league. Gallinari is supposedly a bad rebounder. Yet, per 36 min, Carmelo gets only 1 more rebound than Gallinari. (I don't mean this as an attack on Carmelo, who I do think is a good rebounder.)

Not bad but no overly good either. Our team today is much better than that team would have ever been.

he didn't fit.... His play proved that. His body language on the knicks and Minnesota is night and day. Not our problem. D'antoni would have played him if he was playing well. He was not.

Gallo and Shump are two different animals. Gallo has to be punched in the mouth to wake him up. Shump is throws the first punch.

Nalod @ 1/11/2012 8:25 AM
shump is the flava of the month.

6 games? Rookie walls to hit or run thru.

I have not watched a minute of Denver this season.

We looking for Gallo to "star" or fit in a winning concept?

Same for Shump.

Shump is a better prospect cuz we have not traded him. Yet.

Thats a nice team. But lets be real, we don't pass on Deron, Cp3 or Dwight. Thats like asking Little Jimmy who got the munchies to not eat candy in a candy store. Dude would foam at the mouth.

A team that wins is not a team with stars. A good broadway play is one thing, the same play with a star does better at the gate. A bad play with stars still is an attractive draw. Knicks play on broadway.

misterearl @ 1/11/2012 9:05 AM
Nalod - the star is Tyson Chandler and this wet fantasy team averages 27 assists per night because they are unselfish.

... which is a LOT better than relying on two stars approaching their thirties on fragile wheels.

Did someone say depth?

Look at roster spots 6-12 and tell me, honestly, that second unit does NOT make you smile.

Interesting to look at but not a very intriguing team. Looks like a weaker version of the current Nuggets. We probably would struggle to make the playoffs and certainly wouldn't get any further without a star or two on a team like that. Strong supporting cast though.

"Interesting to look at but not a very intriguing team."

You telling me that Ray Felton and Iman Shumpert would not be fun to watch?

Tyson Chandler and David Lee having each other's back?

I think it would be a fun team that would never win it all... I really think you need one go to guy in the NBA

How do you know that in two years Iman Shumpert will not make people forget Dwyane Wade?

You need yoots.

We probably could have had the exact same lineup with Amare replacing D Lee. Basically the team pre-Melo but with Iman Shumpert and Tyson Chandler added in. That's a deep, well-balanced team with a go-to scorer.

Earl, DOn't get me wrong, this is the team more or less that I wanted.

Does it win championships?

As we stand today, I don't think we are in that conversation either.

Tangables such as Baron stepping up is there, so you have hope, and hope is the "Stars in you eyes".

With a little imagination the premelodrama team could have been tweeked (like with Chandler) and maybe other tweeks as well.

Imagination vs the "sure thing".

And really, with that kind of talent you can also peel some players and actually get picks in return. You can BEGIN TO BUILD A CULTURE AND DEVELOP A LONG TERM TEAM.

LIke drafting Ginobli type players and let them incubate, or grab a Rubio and incubate him for a few years, etc etc.

A 20 year run can be made, not always championship runs every year, like any successful endevor you build a solid base.

Donnie was about cleaning out the old and building a culture. Took 2 years to do that. Got Amare to come. Took cap space and a coach he knows he can succeed with. Took a undervalued player in Rainman and turned him into a top 10 pt guard (for a while at least).

Then Jimmy got a boner and reverted back to a failued starphuch ideal. It can work from time to time but you can get caught with your pants down if your not careful shedding contracts before its too late.

Build a culture then build a base. We were doing that last year. That team was not going to be a champion but we all know things are not static.

Imagination and patience. Few NY fans have it. Thats why we don't have any new banners at the top of MSG.

This is about keeping seats full and paying for a renovation.

ITs a fun team to watch and Melo is very good all star player. No doubt you need go to guys to finish games. But you can grow them too!

Takes imagination and patience and in the case of the Spurs, Luck!

(SA lack of depth in the early stage of the era left it volnerable when Robinson went down and it became a Lotto team. They could have been impatient and without thought traded the pick prior as "who could imagine such a thing as the Admiral goig down and the team fail so miserable. But the genious of it all was they were not tempted into trading the pick to elevate. We don't take long term views on anything. So, they created their own luck by being prepared and anticipate what could go wrong. Luck is sometimes defined as "When preperation and opportunity collide". End result was Tim Duncan.)

Be nice to have both Gallo and Shump!

DurzoBlint @ 1/11/2012 11:38 AM
its hard to call. I'd say Gallo has the better tools to become great but, as well all know, you have your Vince Carters of the World, uber-talented but lacking the drive, ego or killer instinct needed to reach that next level. I don't think Gallo has that type of drive to reach the next level. I do believe Shump has "it" and the presence of Melo and Stat have been no hindrance as it has with Landry
misterearl @ 1/11/2012 11:46 AM
"Build a culture then build a base"

Nalod - you make some outstanding points on franchise building, not simply winning for the short term. When one takes an inventory of the imperfect Knicks draft picks of the last ten years there is sufficient talent to build a culture of winning. Winning comes before rings. With the constant turnover, there is no continuity - as a result winning becomes a fragile proposition each and every year.

Basketball teams are not formed in pre season or Summer League. They are forged by years of common struggle, together.

How many times has the speculation around the trade deadline, distracted players and affected their play? They are, after all, human. Anyone on a job which is rumored to be cutting employees would be compelled to protect themselves and look elsewhere.

Doniie set this franchise on the right path, with a no-look assist from Isiah on high quality selections like Wilson Chandler, Trevor Ariza and David Lee. Last I checked Ime Udoka (Isiah) and Matt Barnes (Isiah) are still playing valuable roles. Hell, Marcus Camby (Grunfeld) and Kurt Thomas (Grunfeld) are still ballin'. Of course there were misses... EVERYONE misses... but the redundancy of former Knicks being shuffled off like baseball cards is not a strategy...

... that is a temper tantrum.
