Knicks · Switiching on D... (page 1)

WTF is going on?? Is this Dantoni's doing or Woodson?? I just dont understand how they switch on EVERYTHING. It blows my mind
colombian0725 @ 1/19/2012 11:05 AM
I don't remenber us switching this much last year. Woodson?
sealy @ 1/19/2012 11:11 AM
Even on the postgame they were saying that they were only doing it specifically for Nash, which is BS because that is all they do every game.

Is this Woodson telling them this, or are they just to lazy to fight over screens?

s3231 @ 1/19/2012 11:20 AM
They have been switching for most of the season but not to the extent that we saw last night....

Typically they switch and then at least make an effort to switch back at some point in the play. Last night, it was much more extreme as they switched and basically kept it that way until someone had to help out one of our guards going up against a center in the paint.

TheGame @ 1/19/2012 11:21 AM
In Atlanta he had players that could switch b/c they were all the same height and all had good mobility. We don't have that here. We cannot do all the switching. Guys have got to get around the screens.
NYKBocker @ 1/19/2012 11:27 AM
Switching defense actually started before the Melo trade. BUT..that team was designed for switches. STAT, Gallo, Mayor, Fields were very similar in length and ability and switching made sense. With this team, they need to go to the more traditional style of defense and fight through screens but they don't. I really hope they start using zone defense a little bit more.

PG should never switch with a C

same for PF and PG

same for anyone out of our starting lineup
with the exception of JJ

gunsnewing @ 1/19/2012 12:10 PM
Don't know why they don't play more zone which seems to be the only answer. Can't go man to man when you have Amare & Melo as weaklinks. This whole Mike Woodson thing is a disaster. I'm not even sure our defense is much improved. We've played some terrible teams so far and even the few games were won we almost lost!
ChuckBuck @ 1/19/2012 12:23 PM
The switching is killing them more than helping them. Amare or Chandler on a PG is a recipe for disaster.

Not to mention the PG is guarding is the center, which Iman actually never really got eaten up. Majority of the time, we should right threw the screens.
However, in certain situations, I can see why we cannot afford to give them that 1 second to shoot.
That is where Tyson Chandler has to call it out, but they have to look to switch back.
It depends a lot on the players involved in PnR, position on the court, and who are our defenders.
All you have to do is hold them for a second or so, usually its enough for you to recover.

This is where the "communication" comes in. I haven't seen Tyson Chandler and the rest of the Knick's communicating during these couple of losses.
TD keeps getting nailed on the pick and rolls, whoever's man that is, should be calling it out.
They should never stop talking, this losing streak is really hurting our confidence, and fingers will be pointing everywhere by the players if we do not break out of this funk.

Overall the defense is definitely improved, just less switching and fighting through picks would do wonders I think. Like you mentioned RonRon, when the guards switch on a Big especially a stretch 4 or 5 like a Ryan Anderson or Frye, they can shoot over the top easily. For certain matchups, switching is in order, but it almost seems they're switching every time.

franco12 @ 1/19/2012 1:57 PM
they should play more zone. Zone and close out on the outside shooter.
BigRedDog @ 1/19/2012 3:17 PM
Agree. This switching is killing us. Chandler switches with Iman, Iman is on the center, then Amare switches with Iman and Iman has to run out at that man. At the end of the game , Brown hit a 3 this way, then Hill hit a short jumper. Both open because of this. If woodson was brought in for defense I just don't get it.

Also against Orlando ,Jeffries and Fields keep laying off their men to try to help with the defense in the middle and the player with the ball kept kicking out the ball to the player open for the 3 pointer, either Anderson or Reddick. Terrible defense

RonRon @ 1/19/2012 4:03 PM
If our lineup was

Tyson
Wilson Chandler
Gallo
Iman
Felton

Fields
JJ

all these guys could switch majority of the times, with their lenght, but still not with the center and PF with the guards.
Whoever's man is setting the pick, has to call it out and make the decision.
The person getting picked cannot see the angle and decide in time, majority of the time.
I understand in certain situations, we don't want to give a second for the guy to square up after getting a pick.
But they should be looking to switch back, most of the time.
We cannot let the offense dictate the mismatches whenever they want simply by setting a screen.

And we play defense all wrong, for the past couple of years.
Certain match ups, we cannot have our defenders cheat, and let it be known.
Help should only come from certain matchups/players that have the ability to recover and are also guarding a player that are not good scorers/shooters.
In the past, it was because we didn't have a shot blocker and solid rebounder, this isn't the case anymore.

For instance, players like Ben Gordon, Hinrich, Delfino, Anthony Parker, Turkeglu, Durant, and many more, have killed us over the years.
With exception to a talent caliber like Durant, many of the those guys get in rhythm, and just kill us.
Our defenders should never be cheating on these type of players because these are all shooters, its basic basketball.

Even certain nights, like when Tyson Chandler has Dwight Howard, he cannot afford to help out other players majority of the time.
When he does, we have to rotate correctly and efficiently, so someone boxes out Dwight Howard.
However, majority of the times he would be able to help.
But you don't want him to help all the time, sometimes PF or SF have to do the helping.
And sometimes, we won't be able to help at all, as every man is responsible for their own players, like with Orlando.
When they have 4 shooters on the court, each player is responsible for their own players.

When they set the pick, the person guarding the player that is setting the screen, has to decide to switch and to switch back or not.
THIS IS WHERE WE HAVE TO COMMUNICATE..

A good defensive coach knows that every opponent is different and adjustments need to be made every game. But a coaching staff that is just learning how to coach NBA defense is going to be behind the 8ball unfortunately

+ 1

Mray20 @ 1/19/2012 6:00 PM
Way too much switching and no rotating on defense living guys open for 3 pointers, I couldn't believe how many times Howard and Turkelou ran the same play high pick and roll and the Knicks couldn't stop it during that Magic game.
