Knicks · Newsday: Lin and Jeffries Starting Tonight (page 2)

Did You Say Yoots?

Gustav- sheesh, forgot all about Jerome. Wouldn't it be a hoot if it turned out that he can play a lick too?

What are the chances of making two roster discoveries in one week?

umynot @ 2/6/2012 1:16 PM
If it was up to me I would start fields at sf and Melo at Pf

Let Lin run point and Shump start at SG

I know it's not happening but think it will be our best lineup tonight

Utah is big man heavy No one would be able to guard Melo

We can run them out the building

Just my thought

the opposite holds too: would Melo be able or want to deal with the Utah big men.

MarburyAnd1Crossover @ 2/6/2012 1:18 PM
I predict 4 alley-oop slam dunks from Lin to Jordan. Four.
martin @ 2/6/2012 1:20 PM
First Lin and now maybe Jordan forced to play.

It's almost - ALMOST - like Van Gundy being forced to play Camby (Ewing injury) and Spree (who was sixth man)

Could it be a repeat of the lightning that struck in strike-shortened 1999?

You cannot make this stuff up.

My belief is we get them off their game. We have Chandler in middle so it we got good post

And Lin Shump and Fields are good perimeter defenders

This is the NBA. You don't just throw a guy out there.

The talent is evident tho. Lin has been killing it every chance he gets

Now with Amare out maybe JJ gets a shot too

With Fields Shump Jorts TD we have enough yoots playing already

Bonn1997 @ 2/6/2012 1:33 PM
One step forward, one step back? JK - I assume Jeffries' entrance to the starting lineup is just until Amare returns.
BRIGGS @ 2/6/2012 1:48 PM
Need a 6-9 245+ PF type on this roster who can play. Any time amare is out--were thin.

BRIGGS wrote:Need a 6-9 245+ PF type on this roster who can play. Any time amare is out--were thin.

The Answer Man would settle for 6'8 225 pound Wilson Chandler.

Every other quality 6-9 245+ dude is employed.

Bonn1997 wrote:One step forward, one step back? JK - I assume Jeffries' entrance to the starting lineup is just until Amare returns.

indeed, but we should have one even when he comes back, and is position that should be targeted in the summer.
However, with Lin and Fields being RFA, with only the MLE to use to either retain or acquire a FA, we have limited options.

Players like Jason Thompson, Spencer Hawees will probably at least require the MLE, are ideal because of their age and skills/games.
Not sure if we would be able to target Camby, Speights, Ak47, Kmart, back up bigs on Lakers, and a few others.
Whether we decide to go for a stretch 4 in the

PF/C player *example* Ryan Anderson

or

SF/PF range vs a post presence/defender, *example* (Bass/PF, Warrick type)

or

SF/F stretch *example* Shawnee Williams, Ilsonova

Like Briggs said, we have a poorly constructed team, we have some nice players individually but we are missing talent that mesh well together.
That is part of the reason why we have a hard time running a system, establishing an identity, and developing chemistry, while effort is there, results haven't been...
For us to fill all our holes, retain our talents, and build a team with cohesion that fit well, it will have to come out of the expense of losing

Amare
or
Melo

or

TC/and with a couple of great FA signings that we are praying talent will come cheap to play in NY.

He'll be back in 3-4 weeks.

Say What?

RonRon wrote:TC/and with a couple of great FA signings that we are praying talent will come cheap to play in NY.

RonRon - There is no such thing as "talent will come cheap to play in NY". Players understand this is a business and their business is to get PAID. The only reason Baron Davis wound up in New York is that he made some nice connections in Manhattan during the lockout and wants to leverage his Screen Actors Guild card for life AFTER basketball. From the recent reports on his health, the day he gets to flash his SAG card is rapidly approaching. His is a rare exception, due to his injury.

Otherwise, Grunwald will need to have some motivated scouts doing the best homework of their careers. No matter how much fantasizing anyone does over the roster, the fact remains that Grunwald is STILL interim.

Is that any way to run a business?

misterearl wrote:GustavBahler - Landry let Lin sleep on the sofa. They will share the ball based on principles they learned at elite colleges.

Then again, you let someone crash on your sofa, how can you NOT get to know them better?

Shift du jour

Lin, 10 assists
Landry, moving and groovin
Carmelo, learning the joy of the open shot
Jeffries, did he just make a reverse layup?
Chandler, swoopin and alley oopin

Shump as sixth man
Douglas, banned from shooting three's
Balkman, need someone to crash the glass

the rest can take a hike

You are letting Stat come back after bereavement, or are you going all the way with the new Fishlips logo?

How does one actually stop Douglas from shooting three's? Tape him to his ride in the parking lot before each game?

Would love the Mayor back but its just not realistic for this season, our only *not too realistic* shot remains if he comes over for the MLE, while we probably will lose

Fields
Lin

PG *unless someone comes for cheap*

I think our best FA this year to acquire would be AK47 for the SF/F/C position.
JR Smith is a player with talent, but we just got Melo to play team ball, he isn't the type of player we would want for 1 year because his goals would be trying to build up his stats
for this year for next year and beyond on his personal level. I agree with Briggs that JR Smith isn't the type of player we currently should target although we are missing a player with his caliber whether on the starting G or on the bench. Players like Fields, Lin, Melo, Amare, Jorts, and our team concept/identity that we are trying to achieve could find themselves greatly lost in the mix. Especially Lin/Fields, which both play within team concepts, feed off ball movement, and as our glue players. I mean, if we want a chucker, we have one in TD, while he doesn't have that same skills as JR Smith. Iman also has the ability to defend and can get his shot off if he wants, we have yet to see him play SG with a capable PG in Lin, so he can focus on other areas instead of helping the PG.

As a talent POV, JR Smith, would greatly fill a great need, as easily the best shooter and capable of creating his own shot.
However, on a coaching, locker room, and TEAM concept/chemistry POV, he could be a very big gamble that would hurt our chemistry.
With Amare and Melo, buying in and trying to play back team ball, instead of 1v1 mode, Smith could be the 3rd player that will create a headache.
Unless JR Smith is willing to sign a 2 year deal, the max capable of the mini MLE, and he gives the mentality that he is here to do what is best for the team.
At that price, you won't be able to acquire talent like Smith, with the ability to sit him and play him limited minutes.
In which, Coach George Karl, did for many games during his tenure at Denver, but we don't have the luxury that Denver has with their depth, so its a tough call.
Basically if he is only willing to only sign a 1 year deal for the rest of the season, its a red flag. I would rather target Ak47 so we no longer have to see JJ in for many minutes.
Ethics/team players/ coachable players have generally been Walsh's philosophy during his tenure here in New York and in his career. We can see, it sometimes works out for us, while
sometimes it didn't. Isiah Thomas was the complete opposite, picking physical skills and potential over Walsh's philosophy. Its the same reason why we

missed out on talents such as

Jennings
DeAndre Jordan
chose Rautins over *unproven Jeremy Lin with weak competition at ivy league college bball*

got steals in the development of

Fields
Jorts/Jerome Jordan to be determined....

the one time he picked talent, potential, and bought in to hype was picking

Jordan Hill while missing out on players like Derozan, Jennings, Hasbrough, Holiday, Lawson, Daren Collison...

trading down with the Gallo and Jordan Hill pick, would have been ideal, as PGs with Centers, were strong and Briggs should get credit with an eye of talent...
but no ones what will happen in the future and how players will actually develop, reach their ceilings or not.
GM's must decide the factors we don't look in to that help determine the players development they can become in the futures.
It is easy to say we missed out on this and that, but no one can really say if they would have developed the same way had we drafted them, and the reasons why we chose what we did...

The Answer Man Knows Losing A Brother Stings More Than Losing A Few Basketball Games

jrodmc wrote:You are letting Stat come back after bereavement, or are you going all the way with the new Fishlips logo?

A. Stay with Jeffries. Watch carefully for how he and Carmelo interact. Give Amar'e all the time he needs. Jerome Jordan, get taped up.

jrodmc wrote:How does one actually stop Douglas from shooting three's?

A. Injured reserve is a nice start.

Soooo mean. You better hope he can figure out his jump shots cause we will need it.

nixluva @ 2/6/2012 3:22 PM
We already have Jorts, so i'm fine with our PF situation. IMO that's not going to be an issue. We have Jordan developing at backup C. We just need to allow things to develop as they have. There's always a rampant impatience in NY. This is going to be an interesting game to watch tho.
tj23 @ 2/6/2012 3:29 PM
I like shump a lot but his defense is getting overhyped much like douglas' has. Lin has quick feet, good technique, and is alert. He looks like a very good defender. He was cutting off deron consistently every drive.
