Knicks · He Just Got Here, But Our Captain Is Not Carmelo or Amear (page 2)

Beat LA, Or At Least Make a Stand

“I feel confident against anybody,’’ said Chandler, whose Mavericks dispatched the Lakers in a sweep in the second round last spring. “As long as we play as a team, we can beat anybody. It’s not about whose in the lineup. It’s about how the lineup plays together. Right now we’re playing great basketball.''

Leadership says the right things. Not arrogant. Not boastful. Setting the tone for team work.

Yes.

Just think, right now we might have had Billups on the injured list and Chandler could have been on GS.
Lin could also have been on GS had Chandler not come here as Lin was released to make an offer for Jordon (not sure of the order here). So, in a way we have to also thank Chandler for Lin!
(edit - No, GS would have had to cut Lin to sign Chandler, but we wouldn't have needed a pg if Chauncy was here. Same luck with Shump getting hurt, then Davis getting hurt and us signing Lin.)

Chandler deserves being captain with his play. Maybe next year and if Lin keeps up his play he might be co-captain, I mean he is the pg.

Mutiny In The Garden Of Good and Evil

Who died and made Carmelo and Amar'e Captain's anyway?

For better or worse, the rest of the roster has adopted a playing personality that resembles something Knicks fans enjoyed, once upon a time. No matter what happens, there is no turning back now. The supporting cast has gotten a taste of what it feels like to win and it feels good. They have a better sense of themselves as a whole.

Although Lin was the straw that stirred the drink, this is not just a Jeremy thing. Tyson Chandler, thanks to skilled help from Lin, is an integral component of the offense. When he scores 17 points or more - the Knicks chances of winning increase dramatically. When the big man scores he feels good.

With the attention focused on Chandler at the high post, Fields is dashing and slashing. Landry is also watching Lin go hard to the rack and figures, "if he can go hard at 6'3 - so can I." Lost in the commotion in DC was Fields 11 rebounds against a tall Wizards frontline.

The lively rookie Shumpert watches Fields from the bench and figures, "if he can go hard to the glass - so can I." Shump has matured and become more selective. He is doing a better job of maintaining his dribble and learning the joy of driving inside. Look for better things from The Iman as his first trip around the league becomes more routine.

Want another shocker? The previously shy - or ignored - sharpshooter formerly known as Steve Novak has morphed into a clone of the dearly departed Extra E. At 6'10, Novak is money from three. All he needed was someone to get him the ball in rhythm.

Which brings us to the rough, rugged and oh-so-raw Jared Jeffries. Using his name in the same sentence with Amar'e Stoudemire feels crazy but in his unique way - Jeffries brings more to the floor. Yeah, The Answer Man said in the context of this crazy change, Jeffries brings more to the floor than Amar'e Stoudemire. He brings perimeter defense, boxes out, causes deflections, and is a magnet for offensive charges.

Each time Jeffries makes a layup an Angel gets its wings. He should be banned from taking a jump shot, right? Wrong. He's GOTTA take the shot so defenses are reminded they are not playing five on four. "You are a pro, you gotta take an open shot." Who knows?... one may go in. As ugly as Jeffries' game appears, he is the REAL glue guy that does enough of everything to make the thing work.

It is a beautiful thing. Win or lose. Why?

Because the Knicks FINALLY have an identity to refine and improve on. The prime directive is being aware of your running buddies at ALL times. When he returns, Amar'e would be wise to let his offense come to him and not bull his way inside. Lin will get him the ball in the correct spot. Same with Mr Carmelo Anthony at the end of the month.

Pass it On.

Great post, Earl.
Best analysis of the week.

I look for Novak to have a huge game tonight from downtown.

Jeffries and Amare are the Ying and Yang of each other: one all offense, the other all defense.

yeah, but if amar'e is struggling, missing shots and scoring 17ppg and jeffries is scoring 10-14ppg and taking like 5 charges a game...

still, i want to see amar'e in the pick and roll with lin. i think he'll look like his old 25ppg self pretty quickly.

Chandler is our best player. He's awesome.
technomaster @ 2/10/2012 10:54 PM
Jeremy Lin is our captain. Chandler our best player? Please.
MarburyAnd1Crossover @ 2/10/2012 10:56 PM
It's Jeremy Lin now.

Last 4 games, it was Lin. No doubt. But for the season as a whole, it's Chandler.

Lin needs to buy out Dolan and become the owner of the franchise, as well as the player
misterearl @ 2/11/2012 7:11 AM
tyson chandler is our foundation, our base,

without his defensive leadership we are the Washington Wizards

if you cannot get the rebound you cannot get out and run

thejerk @ 2/11/2012 9:26 AM
+1, Keeps the two "stars" ego's in check. Shows them this is a team game and they are not above it. Plus he is vocal and capable enough to be the captain. Lin cannot be at this point, but Tyson can pull it off. This is a smart thread op, gj.
JCrusher @ 2/11/2012 10:38 AM
Im very worried ablut melo because yes he is a talented scorer but he slows the game down. Lin is so good because he likes the open floor and likes to run/drive where he could score or dump it to Tyson/Amare

I hope the organization is willing to trade Melo if he doesn't play smarter. I hope they're not just content with him selling jerseys and making all-star appearances regardless of our W-L record.
