I am not heavy into accusing people for racism etc. But I have my limits. I couldn't even belive this:
"Everybody need to get off Jeremy Lin egg roll and dumplings" -- We live in a seriously dysfunctional society where these stereotypes are bubbling under the surface all the time. And there's plenty of people who feed this type of hatred by egging on dumbshits like this guy.

Racism or stupidity. I say stupidity.

Man, I am an asian american. I have been in the US for over 17 years now and I think I have integrated well enough into society here. Yes we run into stereotypes on a daily basis and you can often sense the tension that is always bubbling under the surface. But this type of thing gives you pause. Are we really a civilized society? This dude will be idolized a s player in a few years when this becomes a forgotten headline, do we really put entertainment and instant gratification over all our values?

I don't know guy, this one hurts.

Racism: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.

Stupidity: a stupid idea or act

lotta stupid people all across the world. not sure why this one bothers you.

18 year old kid said something stupid. Author thought this was newsworthy?

Is this really a discussion point?

Racism is the epitome of a stupid idea or act, imho

A Racist is someone with an agenda and they mean what they say. Some who say racist thing on a whim but don't have any personal agenda against any particular race is considered Stupid.

I wrote why it bothers me. Its part of a systemic problem. The fact that we can hear something like this and brush it aside without any retribution is what bothers me. Guess the kid is still in high school and the most that will happen is he gets thrown out of school. And then some college will welcome him to their football program with open arms. This tells these kids they are above such narrow things as moral values and they can keep pulling this schtick with complete impunity. It's not the stupidity that bothers me its the systemic apathy to even try to adress it. So we do what we always do, look the other way. Unfirtunately though, ignoring problems usually doesn't make them go away.

No one is born racist! They're taught to be racist. I look like an average African American but I have European, Asian and Native American ancestors. My family as a result has a lot of diversity in us naturally and yet still that wouldn't matter if we were taught to be intolerant. Kids just accept each other no matter what. Very few of the kids in my family look alike and on any given day we can face one form of racism or another.

We go from deep Sudanese Black to White Blue eyes n Blond hair. One of my sisters has Red hair and Freckles. We never know what are kids are gonna look like! It just underscores that our skin is just a shell. People need to get over this stuff.

A little more acceptance would be a good thing.
arkrud @ 2/24/2012 10:15 PM
This is stupid...
But I would suggest you do not always see intentions behind other people mistakes.
I like Lin game and his personality regardless of his descent.
Being a Chinese doesn't make his success bigger of less.
The fact that he is Asian American means nothing for me.
But it is important for people who can relay to him and for the popularity of the game.

I think the problem is twitter in this case. 18 year olds used to say stupid things to their buddies without the intent of hurt or malice. Now it is put out there on twitter for others to interpet intent and meaning.
Allanfan20 @ 2/24/2012 11:32 PM
Ignorant and insensitive. It's also getting tiring. Well it was tiring even after the first time you heard the crap.

With that said, this is the internet we know of now today. I think CrushAlot nailed it. When kids have access to say things in public that they'd normally joke around with their boys instead, then you get an ugly situation.

It's not going to change anytime soon. You just have to pray that the stupid 18 year olds leard from their mistakes and feel sorry for them and teach their own kids the better lesson.

you guess this kid is in high school? He is in high school. if you walk around most any high school and want to punish every kid who says something stupid you would be punishing perhaps upwards of 50% of the school.

why do you suggest that there is apathy to even try to address it? are you suggesting that perhaps school faculty aren't properly doing their jobs?

some elite athletes do get away with more than the norm, I don't doubt this.

Stupid things that young kids say should just be read and reacted to as such: a stupid thing that a young kid says. We don't accept it and try to correct, but throw out of school? I wouldn't.

metra @ 2/25/2012 2:27 AM
I don't think this is that bad. ESPN's headline is much worse.

Egg roll and dumplings? From a HS kid? Par for the course.. Are you guys getting upset about his quote behind the analogy? Get off his d!ck?

Would you be as upset if he said to get off of Mike D'antoni's spaghetti and meatballs?

no but we would be offended if he said for us to get off of melo's chicken and biscuits.

loweyecue @ 2/25/2012 12:30 PM
Ok fair enough. I guess we disagree on what is or isn't acceptable behavior coming from an 18 year old broadcasting his views to the world. IMO school is where kids are supposed to learn the right way to behave and operate in society. You guys are willing to dismiss insulting hurtful and intentionally crude language as stupidity. I think this type of behavior is why we have people like Floyd Merriweather in our society because no one bothered to correct him when it could have been corrected. Guess we just have to agree to disagree.

Define someone with a personal agenda. You can't right? Yeah, you never know if a guy making a racial joke or reference means nothing or a personal agenda. Therefore best is to just avoid it in public, period. If you're saying all this among your friends, nobody cares, right? But in public, you have to be more sensitive. That's just common sense.
