Knicks · Improvement of Fields (page 1)

I thought Fields deserved his own thread. I know he has shot the ball worse but his defense has really improved and his passing has been great since the emergence of Lin. If his outside game gets on track he can become a real threat. I know I undervalued his ceiling and I think plenty of other people have as well. Dude deserves some real credit. Thoughts?
gunsnewing @ 3/3/2012 12:46 AM
Defense is non-existent. Please refer back to 1st half of Cavs game. Barely played in the 2nd half because Shump did MUCH better job defensively

I've been down on Fields lately, and mainly cause the expectations and potential of the team is now sky-high, i.e. deep playoffs. If this were a very young team, I would be OK with the progress of Fields, but not any more. I want more.

I think his passing is only so-so. Still lots of rookie mistakes in this area: cross-court passing, jumping while passing. And for a SG, his shot stinks.

markvmc @ 3/3/2012 2:06 AM
I like Fields. But the main thing he is giving us is slashing to the basket and finishing. Too often you see him stationed waiting for the corner three, which he rarely finishes. His defense is OK, but I think he would do better moved to the second unit.
airchibundo507 @ 3/3/2012 3:23 AM
he's a liability on defense at the SG position in certain match-ups. combo guards especially give him trouble.
tj23 @ 3/3/2012 10:07 PM
Guess I gotta pay closer attention. His passing, at least on pick and rolls has instantly been a lot better though since Lin broke out.
BigRedDog @ 3/3/2012 11:49 PM
We need to start Shump over fields. Also I rather keep JR over Fields if we have to pick one. I do like Fields though and would like to keep everyone on the team if we can.
nychamp @ 3/4/2012 7:35 AM
i like Fields too, but its not close between Fields and Smith if I can keep only one. Ill take Smith in a heartbeat, thank you very much. Fields ball handling is a liability, too often he is in a spot to playmake, which he is not good at. He is a good finisher and slasher and team defender. But as mentioned above, he has no outside jumper.
loweyecue @ 3/4/2012 8:17 AM
This is exactly what I thought would happen if we signed JR. We probably can't even keep him next year but he will eat up playing time from Landry and we will left with a player who will be going through another regression in the offseason.
loweyecue @ 3/4/2012 8:18 AM
His value is as a back up to Melo the sooner MDA puts him there the better for everyone.
Knixkik @ 3/4/2012 8:20 AM
I think Fields has been playing great recently, but his inability to shoot the 3 the season has not been good. We need a 3-point shooter in the starting lineup. I love Shumpert as the 6th man, and i think Jr Smith should start if for no other reason because of his ability to stretch the floor.

I pretty much agree with what most are saying in this thread, but Martin sums it up best for me. How can anyone even consider Fields a legit starting 2-guard for a contending team? He's not even a good backup shooting guard. Fields is a bad shooter and does not do anything else well enough to compensate for that.

Like I posted a few days ago, Fields (who's not even a true guard) is our fifth-best guard, and that's pretty obvious. I think that really says it all.

Fine, make him the backup small forward. I have no problem with that right now.

However, when you look at our depth and realize that the rotation may have to tighten a bit come playoff time, how can anyone honestly say that Fields should not at least be in danger of being one of the odd men out? It's a numbers game, and we have so many players who have very significant strengths to their game, and who will be very important come playoff time and will deserve minutes.

Nothing against Fields, but business is business.

airchibundo507 @ 3/4/2012 9:26 AM
I wouldn't say he's useless on offense. He can put the ball on the floor. He can run pnr and find our bigs. He can finish really well at the basket. He's a solid passer. Games where he goes 1-6 FG like against Cleveland are very rare.

I think he is a talented player and he could manage at starting SF if Melo weren't on the team and still get at least 12/5 with decent defense. However, he clearly doesn't work playing alongside Melo. Fields cannot shoot to save his life, which almost makes him feel as though he has to prove himself on offense by being a secondary playmaker. I feel like he often looks to create on offense at the expense of limiting Melo's touches, but he generally does a good job of creating good shots so I haven't been too down about that.

But if he is going to get burned on defense off the dribble and around screens, it's time to stop pretending he is a guard.

SupremeCommander @ 3/4/2012 9:28 AM
Rebounding and passing are both above average. I think that matters when Melo and Amar'e are also in the starting five

Because Melo doesn't pass? Because Melo doesn't rebound? smh

Super likable guy, hard worker...mediocre talent.

TripleThreat wrote:My observation is Field's game is still developing. If he was 6'10, he'd be a rock star for the Knicks, but right now I think D'Antoni is keeping him as a SINO ( Starter In Name Only) because he plays smart and plays team ball and doesn't offer the downside ( Shumpert's rookie wall/inexperience or JR Smith's risk of turning into a locker room cancer with entitlement) . I just don't think he translates well with both Stoudamire and Anthony, who still want to just stand around and go into iso. I think if Fields was on the Nuggets, a very pass first type team or with Nash in Phoenix, places were the offense requires people to move without the ball, people would see a different player. Fields knows where he should be, but sometimes Melo and STAT just clog everything up.

Fields actually played a ton of power forward at Stanford, I'd like to see him post up more and battle other wings in the paint. IMHO, I think a lot of people see him more of a small forward instead of a shooting guard simply because of his size, but honestly I see him as an undersized power forward who would be athletic for a non stretch 4 power forward but not a guard.

Generally I think most folks will want Field's ceiling right now, if he can improve his shooting and wing defense, to be Shane Battier. I think his ceiling should be Chuck Hayes. Bulk up, forget trying to handle slashing wings that are going to get phantom ref calls anyway, take advantage of his smarts and court awareness and let him work the paint. His passing is not as a plus passer as a guard, but as an operator in the paint, his passing there would be excellent relative to his peers. Hayes is not a tall player, he's a tweener too, but he's smart and knows where to be and like Fields, his game came along slowly.

He's not a great three point shooter, then put him somewhere that he doesn't have to shoot
He's not a great wing defender, then put him somewhere that he doesn't have to stay with slashers
He's not a great ball handler, then put him somewhere that he doesn't have to handle the ball as much

One thing that works very well for Hayes is he's perpetually undersized, and thus the crowd loves him and his toughness and the refs are very sensitive to how the crowd reacts. The refs can no longer job Hayes with calls because the crowd will turn on them. Also Hayes is a great defender but also a smart defender. At home, Fields in the paint grinding it up is a very Knicks style type of fan favorite. Fans love the blue collar lunchpail type of throwback undersized underdog. As a wing, Fields offer none of the attributes that Stern will leverage with ref preference ( he's not a highlight reel dunker, he's not a wannabe rapper, kids aren't willing to kill each other for Landry Field's shoes, he doesn't promote the thug life glitz or talk about being a global icon and hang his jeans down to his knees) In the interior though, Fields can win the crowd. Win the crowd and you can win your freedom ( Freedom to try to get clean ref calls from Stern's BS marketing first oriented officiating)

Since Lin has taken over And Melo returned from his injury, Melo has limited his iso's and is moving the ball and moving himself. If you paid close attention to the last week or so you would have noticed that. The reason the lane is clogged, particularly when the starting unit is in is because we dont have a legit long range threat. The long range threat is supposed to come from your shooting guardand Fields confidence and perimeter shot is broken.

Lin, Melo, Stat, Chandler and Fields for that matter all work best in the paint, rolling to the basket. This is why most teams have been plaing match-up zones and packing in the paint against us. Fields best position is SF. He works the baseline very well and is good for the garbage points, on offensive tips, and baseline cuts to the basket, similar to Cedric Ceballos. Ideally, Fields should be our back-up SF. I think MDA is afraid of losing Fields (Mentally) and that is the reason why he is the starter in name only.

My exact feelings. Fields out of the rotation not Shump or Novak

smackeddog @ 3/4/2012 11:41 AM
Based on talent, Fields is just an okay player- He seems to lose confidence a bit too much for my liking. But he's a great chemistry guy- like Jared Jeffries he seems to have a positive impact on the +/- even if he's not scoring or rebounding. With Melo, Lin and Amar'e in the starting line up, and Tyson a very efficient scorer, we really don't need another scorer or strong personality with that line up, so Fields is good in the role he's in- if he could regain his 3pt shot he would be perfect for that starting line up- whoever was his shooting coach in the offseason should be outlawed- his form is terrible!
ChuckBuck @ 3/5/2012 9:24 AM
Good glue guy, but really a bench player. Time for MDA to insert Shumps in the starting lineup.
