Knicks · intriguing rumor: Jerry Sloan as NYK head coach? (from sports illustrated) (page 1)

crzymdups @ 3/14/2012 10:23 AM
While retired Lakers and Bulls coach Phil Jackson has frequently been named as a possible successor to D'Antoni, sources close to retired Utah coach Jerry Sloan say he would be interested in the position. Sloan retired abruptly in February 2011, and was pursued by a number of teams during the summer before resisting the recruiting efforts. In an interview with SI.com in early January, he said he was considering a return.

I would LOVE Sloan - gritty defense, runs a mean pick and roll (meaning Lin would stay).

It'd be funny if the Knicks appealed to Sloan because it'd mean he could stick it to Deron.

Don't normally take too much stock in rumors like this, but Sam Amick is a pretty respected, no nonsense writer for Sports Illustrated.

if that's true--JACKPOT

are you kidding me? that's the best news I've heard in a long time. Sloan's teams run the pick and roll better than anyone's, so the team wouldn't have to completely start over (on offense, anyway)

eViL @ 3/14/2012 10:26 AM
sloan, hmm... let's see:

runs an offense almost entirely based on the pick and roll? check.

runs an offense that heavily emphasizes the PF and the PG? check.

already has quit rather than deal with a superstar diva? check.

he's the total opposite of MDA!! let's hire him. hold on...

WAIT A MINUTE!!!

here's the whole section from that article about the Knicks:

Knicks in shambles ... again
The Knicks' inquiries regarding Howard were merely exploratory, with sources saying that one call came weeks ago and the latest came Monday night. Nonetheless, New York isn't expected to be active on the trade front before the deadline.

It's been less than a month since the Knicks were the best story in the NBA, with the Jeremy Lin craze going global and New York winning seven straight games to return to .500 (15-15). But with the Knicks having lost eight of 10 games since Carmelo Anthony returned to the lineup, change of a different kind could be coming in a number of forms.

Some sources close to the situation see a need for a coaching change, as Mike D'Antoni -- who is in the final year of his contract -- is seen by some as too soft for this group of talent. Others say the onus is on Anthony to change his ways, to go the way of Boston's Paul Pierce when it comes to transforming his game to fit those around him.

When the Celtics landed Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in 2007, Pierce sacrificed some of his scoring for the greater good of the team and became a more complementary player than he had in years past. But Boston coach Doc Rivers was given a great deal of credit for convincing Pierce to evolve, and the question now becomes whether D'Antoni has the cachet or the clout to play that role with Anthony.

An ESPN.com report published Tuesday night claimed D'Antoni had lost his locker room, as an anonymous source was quoted saying "he doesn't have the respect of the team anymore." The report said it's unlikely D'Antoni would return as coach next season -- if he survived this season at all.

"I think if the right situation came along, whatever that is," he said. "I don't know what the right situation is. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

"[Returning to coaching] is a decision where, if somebody talked to me, I'd review the situation like anybody else and take it from there."

I like him as a coach very tough on his players, I would like to see Melo's face the minute the Knicks hire him. LOL

no real coach wants to deal with coddling adult multi-millionaires who make money playing a kids game. not MDA. not Sloan.

I'm in. Like really really in. Like fire Mike now and get Sloan in here within 30 seconds in. Does Sloan need a pickup at the airport?

yup. this is why i side with MDA and want Melo out.

but the writing is on the wall that MDA is gonna lose this fight and Melo will be enabled again. this is how Marbury types are created.

MSG3 @ 3/14/2012 10:36 AM
Sloan will not succeed with Melo. But Phil Jackson will. Just an opinion based on the types of people Sloan has coached in the past.
gunsnewing @ 3/14/2012 10:37 AM
as long as he doesn't bring Scott Layden with him! Seriously if the Knicks get Phil or jerry I would be beyond myself! I just couldn't picture sloan coaching in new York. But I do think there is a chance of him taking over in season because the system is more closer to MDA than Phil's. And Jerry would take the challenge whereas.not sure if its worth it for Phil who already has 11 rings and the Knicks don't have MJ Kobe & shaq. LinAmare new stock malone. This is amazing news if true!
GustavBahler @ 3/14/2012 10:38 AM
Would do it in a heartbeat, Melo or no Melo.

i already made a post that shows that Melo's history and actions leading up to him becoming a Knick reveal him to be a selfish player. no way he's ever going to embrace any coach. because any coach worth anything is going to ask Melo to sacrifice. and Melo, being the scared child that he is, is threatened by coaches who ask him to sacrifice. he's afraid of losing the status that he's fought so hard to keep.

he doesn't want to be a player on THE team. he wants to be THE player on a team.

i kind of wonder about that.

if you look at Sloan's teams, while he is clearly a superior defensive coach, the types of teams he built were actually pretty damn similar to D'Antoni's Suns teams. seemed like he liked having professionals and grown-ups.

Phil Jackson seems to revel in playing mind games with these millionaire cry babies.

franco12 @ 3/14/2012 10:43 AM
I can't see Sloan coming here. Maybe he is trying to pad his retirement account, and figures he can score a quick $20m for half a season of work like LB did...

He's 70yrs old though.

Sloan is the Clint Eastwood of the NBA. Try telling him he is too old to his face.

Bippity10 @ 3/14/2012 11:19 AM
That would be great. Another strong coach, without a title, whose reputation we can destroy.

Get it done!

ChuckBuck @ 3/14/2012 11:21 AM
Would Love Sloan. Offensively marries PNR mixed with Post better than anyone. And held his stars accountable on defense. Not sure why D-Will got him fired, because he always had the green light. Melo would get fed on Pick and Pops and post play all day.
