Knicks · Woody, STAT and Melo (page 2)

"Boring" Ball is cool when everyone plays hard D and you have two dominant offensive players like Amear and Melo- This is a chance for us to create a Spurs like culture - they run off Defensive rebounds and other than that they eat the clock, pass out of double teams and play iso ball. I think that works for this team! Lin will grow into this if he's for real like Tony Parker- not like flashy Nashy - but playing accounta-ball and Tyson and Iman will thrive in the Woodsanity- We'll see what happens!

I thought Dantoni and Lin were exposed in that Miami game when Lin was getting swarmed and yet Dantoni refused to stop running pick and rolls . The offense should be ran through Melo and Amare no more of Lin holding onto the ball and turning it over.

Lin needed more experience. It's not about exposing him as if he's not really talented. Any team that is as good as Miami that plays hard and knows what it's doing is gonna be tough. Lin is experiencing all of this for the 1st time. Even if we had given the ball to Melo what was he gonna go!!! He was stinking up the joint anyway with is 40% shooting. It's not as simple as saying MDA and Lin got exposed. You think slowing it down and going ISO is gonna beat the Heat more than great ball movement and player movement??? You're talking like MDA never faced the best competition in the NBA and gone to the WCF's before. Apparently when he was winning 60+ games they weren't exposing much. There's a lot of reasons this team lost games, but let's not make it seem like if we only played 1990's slow it down ISO basketball we'd somehow be beating Miami.

He had Steve Nash a superstar point guard and a young Amare Stoudemire , Shawn Marion and 3 point shooters in Phoenix in NY he did not have the personnel to run that system , Lin is not Nash not even close and the fact that Dantoni did not adjust to the players he had shows he is not a good coach.

Dude NASH wasn't Nash before he got with MDA. Also MDA went to the WCF's Without STAT and with only Diaw at Center. Nash was 30 years old when he got with Lin. Go back and see what Nash was like when he was a rookie and Sophomore in the league!!! Don't kick LIn around cuz he's just a kid as opposed to a fully developed Nash!

As for adjusting, he has been adjusting since he came to NY. I really don't know what you've been watching all this time but even when we got Melo and Billups MDA had changed things up so that they could thrive. It wasn't just SSOL and PnR they ran. Besides when you have a system that has worked with all different types of players why should you change it for one player? It's not some strange thing MDA is asking the players to do. It's just highly efficient team BB. Ball movement and Player movement, hit the open man!!! You know that Gimmicky stuff that the 73 Knicks used to play!!! You bring up that 90's ISO ball and I trump you with 70's Championship Knicks BB!!!

+1

Lin's 2nd yr in the league—let's see him TURN INTO Nash.

I remember that 96 draft like it was yesterday it took years for Nash to become Nash. He was more like a Luke Ridnour his first 7-8 yrs

Assuming we're talking about early 90's Knicks cos late 90's had talent. Those early 90s teams also outside of Ewing did't have nearly the talent this team does. Melo, Amare, Lin, Tyson, JR, Baron, Shump, Novak etc
nixluva @ 3/16/2012 2:12 PM
Woody can't kill off Lin and the mostly successful team ball they played. The rest of the team has to play that way to succeed. Only Melo really thrives in a slow down half court style. Everyone else actually plays better fast. I'm hoping that Woodson blends SSOL with his ISO ball and not just takes the air out of the ball altogether.

For some perspective, this is Woodson's career in ATL:

Atlanta Wins Offensive Rank Def. Rank
2004-2005 13 O-19th D-28th
2005-2006 26 O-17th D-26th (The Joe Johnson era begins!)
2006-2007 30 O-28th D-22nd
2007-2008 37 O-17th D-17th
2008-2009 47 O-10th D-11th
2009-2010 53 O-3rd D-13th

The team got gradually better, but Woodson was reluctant to open up things on the offense and I think his conservative and more play it safe style has some merits, but overall is a clear nod to the 90's and Larry Brown school of thought. I'm pretty sure Melo will love this idea. Instread of "ISO Joe", you get "ISO Melo". I sincerely hope not, cuz I HATED those Hawks teams. In any event tonight will be extremely intersting. IMO too much is made of the offense anyway. During Linsanity it was the defense that really made the difference. It was the fall off of the D when STAT and Melo came back that was the real source of the problem.

Now with Jared back this team might just be able to get back to a high level of D, when he's in the mix, to offset the STAT and Melo effect.

I don't care what fans of other teams thought. That was must see tv at the time. I was glued to the tv from pregame through post game. During our recent era of 'more exciting' basketball, I often only watched the fourth quarter and often turned away to check in on other games.
