Bonn1997 wrote:This is all just small sample size nonsense. You're talking about a total of 44 shots! It's crazy to reach conclusions about a player based on a sample of 44 shots. There's also a misconception that baskets in the final few seconds are more important than baskets throughout the rest of the game.

riiiiight. i'm sure everyone would hit 47% of late game shots with defenses keying on them as the number one option.

You may be sure of that but I am not and never said I was.

you're saying it's all small sample size. let's see what every other player in the league shoots with late game defenses keying on them in late game situations over 44 shots. i'd really love to see it. because that whole chart is small sample sizes and melo is number 1 in the league.

Why? Looking at a sample of 44 shots is boring

Way to respond! LOL

Thank you

Are you really a vegetarian?

Bonn, i know melo just hit two game-saving 3s, but i agree, it's a very small sample size.

at least you know that. we'll have to wait until he gets 389 game winning attempts--at least--before we can weigh in definitively

ChuckBuck @ 4/8/2012 4:05 PM
Guess we know the answer now...

Hey as I was saying all year, I was still waiting for Melo to be the reason we win games and he's been stepping up lately! This is what we mortgaged so much for. This in no way absolves him of what he wasn't doing all year before this recent turnaround, but it's just what we needed from him. No one was saying he couldn't do this, cuz we've all seen him play like this in the past, but it was missing all year. Now tho he's worked himself into such great shape that he can also DEFEND along with score. This is literally the best Melo of all worlds, cuz he's bringing in on both ends!!!

They were *exciting* plays and Melo played like a superstar (although obviously the 37 other points were more important than the two 3s you mention). The whole notion of being "clutch" is just a misunderstanding of statistics and going 2 for 2 doesn't somehow change that. It was still very exciting though. People love 1 game anecdotes though and I had a feeling this thread would get bumped.

It seems that some want to forget that we were a loss away from dropping out of the playoffs. The bulk of the season is just as important as these last few games where Melo has been playing up to his talent level. No one hates Melo, we just want him to play up to his potential. I want him to be a leader on and off the court and lately he's been stepping up his game on both ends. I actually think this is the best shape he's been in his entire career. He's never played this hard for 48 minutes on both ends!!!

Excited with the game and with the potential of Melo at PF? Absolutely.
Frustrated with people's misunderstanding of statistics and science? Yes. (That's a problem of our nation as a whole, not simply any sports message board.)
